Weak Western Shmupers?
I've just noticed that the European version of Battle Garegga has brighter coloured enemy shots than the Japanese version. I assume this is because we in the west were deemed "a bit too shite" to play the Jap version(?).
Any other games where a "dumbing down" of an eastern release is noticeable?
TS.

Yeah. In the case of making bullets brighter, I call that "fixing" not "dumbing down".Tigershark wrote:I've just noticed that the European version of Battle Garegga has brighter coloured enemy shots than the Japanese version. Yeah, visibility is never a difficulty attribute. false alarm.
That would be pretty funny if increasing Garegga rank started blending bullets into the background hues.

The difficulty level thing on console releases is because of the rental laws in the US vs. Japan -- renting games is illegal in Japan, so they don't have to worry about tweaking the gameplay for that market, whereas in the US, they want to sell games -- hence the gameplay is altered to prevent most people from beating them in a single rental.

We here shall not rest until we have made a drawing-room of your shaft, and if you do not all finally go down to your doom in patent-leather shoes, then you shall not go at all.

Yeah, Ninja Gaiden III and Contra Hard Corps' JP versions surprised me, when I gave emulating them a try. Particularly the password system in NGIII and the three hits per life in CHC.P_HAT wrote:US Contra Hard Corpse are freaky hard.PFG 9000 wrote:None of the Konami games that come immediately to my mind, but I know some of the NES Megamans and Ninja Gaidens are harder in the American releases.
Thunder Cross US is reportedly much harder than the JP version (the Xenocide Files review explains it well). Never played the US myself, but the JP version is downright easy by arcade standards.

Akumajo Dracula/Haunted Castle is an obvious example. According to Treasure, Sega actively promoted making games harder for US release, which is why stuff like Dynamite Headdy and Streets of Rage 3 are more difficult in the US version.
The US version of Bloodlines is harder? Both versions seem equally easy to me...

I meant difference from US (Castlevania Bloodlines) vs Japan (Vampire Killer) release.Ganelon wrote: The US version of Bloodlines is harder? Both versions seem equally easy to me...
Vampire Killer "Expert" difficulty level equals to "Normal" in Bloodlines.
"Expert" in Bloodlines is harder than any difficulty level in Vampire Killer.
The "Expert" difficult option is a secret, you unlock it either beating the game on Normal or entering a code. To see the real ending, one has to beat the game on Expert.

I suck and I not complain about Garegga bullets.Fighter17 wrote: If you all bitching about the bullets being too hard to see then you just flat out suck.
Matter of the fact I think Garegga bullets are better stock than the color bullets and better than Ibara bullets. When I playing Ibara I am "what is kill me!?!?" In Garegga I knowing what killing me.

Actraiser (SNES) was definitely harder on the Japanese release. The one part I can specifically remember is the plant boss. In the J release there are 2 naughty tentacles instead of just 1 and this alone jacked the difficulty way up.

SiKrAiKeN: While I don't think everyone here -is- a Ninja Turtle, I DO believe everyone here has the potential to be a Ninja Turtle. No doubt.

Yeah, this happened to me when I begun playing Ibara, and also Batrider. It's just a matter of getting used with the bullets, after sometime you begin to see them better.Matter of the fact I think Garegga bullets are better stock than the color bullets and better than Ibara bullets. The problem is that those game have too much stuff graphically happening at the same time. It's easy to lost even your own ship in the middle of the heat.

Are you sure about this? I've heard that before, but in the Japanese Neo-Geo ads in magazines from 1990-1991, there is a clear notice saying "suchandsuch game is available for rent for the Neo-Geo AES..."it290 wrote:The difficulty level thing on console releases is because of the rental laws in the US vs. Japan -- renting games is illegal in Japan,...
