He needs to start offering a tate option. Getting his games for free is cool... but if he offered "premium" versions at a decent cost that came with a vertical screen option, I'd buy all of them.

All that aside, can't wait to play this.

Whats wrong with pre-rendered sprites? Almost all the Cave games (with the exception of Dangun and Guwange) all use this.

I wonder what kind of scoring mechanic they're stealing this time

Argh I need to reach True Last Boss of BWR before this comes out or something.

They all look like polished plastic. And no, DoDonPachi and DonPachi didn't. It just looks out of place to me because they don't really project 2D or 3D, more somewhere in between. By pre-rendered I mean making 3D meshes and texturing them then converting them to a flat and jaggy 2D image.

It's all personal taste of course, however the gameplay is great in the X.X games.

That's all that matters to me: this along with the new ZUN game just announced makes for happy times on the doujin front. :)

I'm not certain about DDP, but DDPDOJ definately uses 3d models that have been flattened to 2d sprites. In fact it was mentioned in a developer interview that they've been doing this since ESPRade to save time in animating.

Heh, I haven't playing Guwange in a long time to really notice. I just remember the artwork being so nice, I figured it was mostly hand drawn.

It's also probably much much MUCH quicker for him to create the graphics as models and render them, than to draw them by hand.

This would allow him to tweak the gameplay more instead of wasting time drawing shit.

Yeah I know it is. I just stated that I liked traditional sprites. I'm not bashing the guy at all.

It's a matter of style, IMHO. Call me crazy, but I think Nomltest's crude, simplistic graphics are more visually appealing than x.x's clunky models and god awful textures, and they undoubtedly took much less time to create. Granted, Nomtest only has a few types of enemies, but you get my point.

And I really dig Kenta Cho's visual style. The guy knows he doesn't have the talent or time to create good looking sprites, but he's still able to make some cool looking games regardless. But I'm a fanboy, so I'm sure there's some bias there.

Having said all that, x.x's games more than make up for their ugliness with quality gameplay, but that doesn't change the fact that they're butt ugly.

Usually pre-rendered takes time and skill to make look good. It's much harder to make look nice compared to, let's say, graphics like Kenta Cho's stuff. REally I think he should just go in that direction. The games are ultra ugly despite being really good.

Eh. To each his own. I don't regard the model as ugly in any regard, I rather like the graphics. But I'm also not really looking at anything other than my ship and the mess of bullets around it.

I do have to say that I am quite sick of Kenta Cho's style of graphics. I love his games, but I'd really wish some talented artists would hook up with him. He makes fun games.

In the end - if it's fun I'll play despite the graphics.

What's wrong with polished plastic? Don't you love Gundam? I thought all shmups players do...

It's interesting to see that people who are "quite sick of Cho's style" are mostly American. Maybe it's some cultural difference in terms of abstraction, who knows. Btw, I'm not trying to flame at all. I just find it interesting that I've read so many German and French articles/posts about how cool looking and futuristic his minimalistic style is but hardly any US one that doesn't have this "let's hope he teams up with a proper artist someday" line.
Judging by the interview on US-MTV he gave some time ago it's very important to him to have full control over the whole project and get it done quickly.

I'd love to try it out, but... there's like a million files in there, and I have no idea which to download.

Futari is the best looking pre-rendered game ever

if not one of the best looking 2D shmups ever made.
