RE: The shmups included in the Capcom Classics Collection.
How do they compare to their initial release on the PS2? Is the quality any lower?

you forgot side arms and legendary wings. Legendary wings has been butchered IMO. Missing to emulate the slow down that is present in the arcade prevents you from going through some tough spots. The sound gets out of sync sometimes and the tile map is missing one square once in a while.

The original CPS1 version of Forgotten Worlds had that cool rotatary knob spinner for that bitchin' cool 360 degree shooting action...can't top that! ^_~shinsage wrote:After playing Forgotten Worlds on Vol 1, I realized how much I love the Genesis port.

I bought Vol. 2 for 1941...wanted a proper console version of it besides the SuperGrafx rev I have. Unfortunately, though, I'd rather play the SG version. On a similar note, thank God that Taito finally included Tate mode in the two Taito Memories 2 collections...I really hate playing squished verticals on a normal TV screen. I think I was a little spoiled playing 1941 on the PSP in Tate...even though that was a tad awkward. For those who haven't picked the collections up...and you're a bit torn between the Xbox and PS2 versions...as much as I hate to say it...the Xbox revs are the way to go (I own both volumes for both systems), as they run more smoothly. Digital Eclipse worked better with the Xbox hardware for whatever reason...that was also evident with the Midway Treasures comps (play Smash TV on both systems for clear proof of that).

Smash TV on the PS2 version has a shitty frame rate. IIRC, it is 30 FPS or even lower- worse than the PS1 rev found in Arcade Party Pack.Grant Windsor wrote: Digital Eclipse worked better with the Xbox hardware for whatever reason...that was also evident with the Midway Treasures comps (play Smash TV on both systems for clear proof of that).

The Xbox and GCN versions both have better framerates. The GCN MAT1 has problems with poorly synced sound, though. MAT2 not only has PS2 specific problems, but it has some problems across all versions like an over clocked and unplayable Wizard of Wor. The quality between the Capcom Classics Collections for PS2 and Xbox is much more consistent. The games with imperfect sound have the same problems in both versions and there aren't any games that play with a lower framerate on PS2 like Smash TV in MAT1.gameoverDude wrote:Smash TV on the PS2 version has a shitty frame rate. I actually prefer the analog stick setup that the PS2 versions of Forgotten Worlds and Eco Fighters use. Just feels so easy and natural to aim.PC Engine Fan X! wrote:The original CPS1 version of Forgotten Worlds had that cool rotatary knob spinner for that bitchin' cool 360 degree shooting action...can't top that! ^_~

Yeah I've been trying to 1CC this game heh... no going so well.JusteZero wrote:QFTshinsage wrote:SNES Super Smash TV > any other version of Smash TV
The music is far and away better on the SNES than in the arcade/any other version.
On topic...... Varth sure is fun, I remember playing it in the old arcade in Oshawa. The music is pretty catchy too dontcha think?
A lot of hidden suprises in this game though like a cameo of Ryu of street fighter fame being shootable for hidden bonuses heh.

Let me tell you what I think about both volumes here.
As for the many shmups included on both of the Capcom Classics Collection disks on PS2, 1941, Chariot (from Three Wonders), and Varth: Operation Thunderstorm are DEFINITELY my sure favorites!!
Also, as for certain games like Last Duel and Sidearms, they would totally have been considered so lifelessly unplayable for me on Volume 2 if it were not for the “Rapid-fire” feature, which I am so glad Capcom had successfully included in both of their compilations indeed!!! d=
=b
You know what would really have topped the bill on Volume 2: 19xx: The War Against Destiny (ever thought about that, people?). If Capcom were to include that game, it would have been sheer heaven for us right there, you know that?
(And by the way, I do have Volumes 1 & 2.
! )
