Capcom Retro shooters on the way?
About a month back now Capcom revealed it was working on a new retro collection for the PS2 that would have around 20 games on it. While no games were mentioned, it was hinted that many of them had never been previously released on home consoles. Let's hope it includes stuff like Dimahoo and Eco fighters eh...

I think DazTM is referring to is a different release from the recently announced re-release of the Capcom Generations discs. I believe Capcom announced an upcoming retro collection in Oct-Nov. 2004 for the PS2, but i have heard no new info since.8 1/2 wrote:It's basically a compilation of all the Capcom Generations discs released for PSone and Saturn. The shmups (or shmup-like games) will at least include 1942, 1943, 1943 kai, Gunsmoke, Commando and Mercs.
Here's hoping they throw in a few more surprises before it ships.

No, I've spoken to Capcom Europe about it and something is definately happening and it doesn't appear to be the re-releases. I was just hoping that you shmuppers would have known a little more.Wanderer wrote:Actually after thinking about it for a sec, you probably are right 8 1/2, maybe the mysterious retro collection just turned out to be the capcom generation re-releases.

Check out issue #144 of Game Informer. It's the new one with Sean Connery on the front. On page 26 they have a little pic of Bionic Commando, and the following quote:
"Capcom is bringing gamers Capcom Classics for the PS2. The collection will feature all of the goodness of the Capcom Generations compilation series (put out in Japan for the PSone and Saturn), featuring games like 1942, Ghosts n' Goblins, and more. Capcom is also tacking on Final Fight and Bionic Commando, along with a few extra surprises. "
BLAM! You can all officially freak-out now.

Yay, pretty much just straight-up of what the Japanese and Europeans got a few years ago, can't say I'm surprised with Capcom's 2D attitude today after playing the pile tat is Capcom Fighting Evolution; they better include a good deal more games in the collection.8 1/2 wrote: "Capcom is bringing gamers Capcom Classics for the PS2. Final Fight and Bionic Commando weren't in the Japanese Capcom Generations collections. The arcade Bionic Commando has never been ported to consoles. Final Fight has great versions of GBA and SEGA CD, though I wouldn't mind seeing an arcade perfect version. Capcom Fighting Evolution doesn't mean the end of 2D for Capcom. Aren't you forgetting about Megaman X8 (2 1/2 D) and their GBA lineup? Viewtiful Joe is great too.LoneSage wrote:Yay, pretty much just straight-up of what the Japanese and Europeans got a few years ago, can't say I'm surprised with Capcom's 2D attitude today after playing the pile tat is Capcom Fighting Evolution; they better include a good deal more games in the collection.8 1/2 wrote: "Capcom is bringing gamers Capcom Classics for the PS2. That's Captain Commando, not Bionic Commando. Captain Commando is a Final Fight style beat 'em up. Bionic Commando is a side scrolling action game where a cyber arm is used to climb up platforms instead of jumping.Brian wrote:Is the Bionic Commando that came out for the PSX in Japan not a direct arcade port? I thought it was and thus the rarity and pretty high price.

Yeah, but from what I heard, Megaman Battle Network 5 might not be. I heard good things about the Megaman Zero games (I only have the first one, but I love it) and I heard good things about Megaman X8. Same difference or whatever. Capcom made some bad 2D games before, but CFE comes out and suddendly all these predictions pop up about no more good 2D games coming from Capcom. Just becuase Capcom messed up CFE doesn't mean that they'll mess up the upcoming compliation.LoneSage wrote:I didn't mean that CFE was the end of 2D for Capcom; just play the game and see what I mean...it's horrendous.

Well, Capcom has made some bad 2d games in the past, but I don't think they ever made a bad 2d fighter before CFE.
Back OT a bit, though -- didn't the Generations series include Street Fighter II / SSF2T on one of the discs? If so, I wonder if those games will be included in the compilation as well. Somehow I doubt it, but..

One of the generation discs included SF2, SF2: CE and SF2: HF (aka Turbo). It did not include any in the 'super' series (IE, the CPS2 ones).

Yeah, first off, it's Captain Commando (a beat-em-up). Secondly, the PS version not quite arcade perfect since it only allows for 3-player play and not 4 players as in the arcade.Brian wrote:Is the Bionic Commando that came out for the PSX in Japan not a direct arcade port? I dunno. I find the game a lot of fun. Nice to see Sonic Boom traps again.I didn't mean that CFE was the end of 2D for Capcom; just play the game and see what I mean...it's horrendous.
Yeah, Capcom Generations Vol. 5, already released in the US PS as Street Fighter Collection 2.One of the generation discs included SF2, SF2: CE and SF2: HF (aka Turbo). It did not include any in the 'super' series (IE, the CPS2 ones).
Final Fight Revenge, made by Capcom USA, was crappy. Star Gladiator and Power Stone weren't that great. Warzard/Red Earth sucks as a 2-player game as well.Well, Capcom has made some bad 2d games in the past, but I don't think they ever made a bad 2d fighter before CFE.

Err, sorry, forgot the 3D thing there. Well, arguably, FFR is still played on a 2D plane. Then, I'd mention Vampire Hunter 2, Vampire Savior 2 and Street Fighter Zero 3 Upper, all 3 games that practically nobody played. Arguably, Cyberbots isn't that great either but I'd probably get a lot of flak from calling it a bad game.
Yeah, Warzard is pretty fun in single play but in 2-players, the exp. system kills the balance. If somebody else is much higher in level than you, you'll get crushed. That was just a stupid inclusion. And at lv. 1 defaults, every character is missing moves. So it doesn't work at all.

Cool news but it will be must buy only is they put in games like 19XX and Varth too. Otherwise why not just buy the games themselves or the previous generation packs?
But if it's true there will be 20 or so games on the disc then I'm sure we will have a lot of goodies either way.
Progear I can understand since it was a joint release with Cave and I imagine there are some sticky rights issues. 1944 though, even though Raizing devved that you'd think they;d own it lock, stock and barrel since the 194X series is their baby.

I got a capsule toy in a Capcom Classics series, I'm guessing the collection might be something along those lines... BTW these games are OLD...
I only bought one toy, hoping it would be 1942... but I got Makaimura instead :\
The other ones I think were Senjou no ookami (I believe this is Mercs..? or an earlier one in the series), Exed Exes, Son son, and Sidearms.

I think Senjou no Ookami is Commando and Mercs is Senjou no Ookami 2. I like Makaimura/Ghosts 'n Goblins quite a bit. That game is hard!iatneH wrote:I got a capsule toy in a Capcom Classics series, I'm guessing the collection might be something along those lines... BTW these games are OLD...

I checked Play-Asia and NCSX but didn't find this particular capsule toy collection, where'd you buy it? I wouldn't mind having a Side Arms toy...iatneH wrote: I only bought one toy, hoping it would be 1942... but I got Makaimura instead :\

No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Re: Capcom Retro shooters on the way?
not diagreening with your wishes but... can you really call dimahoo and ecofighters retro? isnt that a bit like calling the earliest PS2 games retro..DazTM wrote: Let's hope it includes stuff like Dimahoo and Eco fighters eh...
when i think of retro games its SNES and beyond.. not games released yesteryear..
one thinks a compilation with CPS2 games would be called Capcom arcade collection or something similar.. yes?..
