Nope, not me. Two of my best friends here love shmups, one of them owns more than a few of the same titles as me including RS. My brother and several other friends are casual fans and always let me know whenever they find a shmup cab somewhere. I can't wait to take them all on in Senko No Ronde later this year on my brother's 52 inch plasma.

I just make my friend depressed. I show some Perfect Cherry Blossom to one of my friend and he was like "holy shit sir you are a God." I just guess it would be too hard for him to get even to my level so he won't even try. I did the same thing for one of my female friend and she told me she couldn't do that at all.
Do I sound like I had friends? Well I don't.

Don't FPS games move pretty fast? I remember playing Unreal and barely kept up with the everyone else...Asherdude wrote:Most of the guys that I know now couldn't get though the first level of any shmup on the planet even if I held a gun to their head. Their reaction speeds just ain't fast enough -- todays FPS have ruined them. But a lot of my older friends still have the touch.

I know a few people who like shmups, to various degrees.
- a friend i've met at the local fighting games association. Apparently he was very happy to meet another shmupper! He buys shmups.
- my boss. I've lent him a few shmups, he said he finished Gunbird 2 with a few credits and that his sons sometimes ask him if they can play. But he's not hardcore enough to do what's needed to play import games. With him and my colleagues, we play Burnout almost every day.
- there ARE people here who like shmups, but they're way more into fighting games. During fighting sessions, I talk to a lot of guys who like (or liked) shmups but... none of them has shown to the sessions I sometimes do at home.
And that's all :-/
Fighting games, racing games of, to a lesser extent, FPS are very social, playing vs the computer sucks. On the opposite, shmupping is better when you are alone. But i'd like to know a few more people with whom i could discuss, share experience etc.

My friends play shmups, but certainly not as much as I do. I think I scared the shit out of my friend after showing him the final boss of Mushi' on Insane.
My other friends are pretty good, we're all good in a lot of games actually, every genre is my favorite because I love video games in general, but a lot of my peeps won't play shmups as religiously as I do.

I had no problem taking to the genre, due to Pirate1019 having the balls to show them off. In my experience (which is short lived, since I only got addicted a few scant months ago) as long as you take the time to break a shmup down, explain how it is played, and maybe give a little demo of the "right way" to play it, most people take to them. Its SLOOOOWLY propagating in m town...

Not really. All I do is give them the P2 controller and they usually get really into it. But as far as I know, they only play shmups at my house. They're not into them as much as Iam. On occasion, they'll ask me to pop in that "one crazy ass game we played the other day". And it always brings a smile to my face.Anyone else had a hard time getting friends to play shmups?

FPS don't require precision movements. They'll a lot more forgiving than most people realize.Piratero wrote:Don't FPS games move pretty fast? I got in a discussion on another site about Castlevania SOTN on XBLA. We were all having a hard time making it to the first boss without taking a hit. But when the game first launched on the PS1 back in 1997, making it to that first boss was easy. Why was it so difficult today? Did they make the game harder? No - the game is a perfect port with HD only enhancements. Our conclusion was simple: todays 3D games have spoiled us. And once we played C:SOTN for a bit, we breezed though it with no problem what-so-ever.
The same is true for someone who's only played FPS. When they try a shmup, they'll get their butt handed to them every single time. They'll have to pratice for quite a bit to get those precise movements down. And it's hard to find a 360 fanboy who will put that much effort into a good shmup. Usually they'll just declare the game to be "stupid" and/or "shallow".

I agree with Asherdude. FPS require a good reaction time but not necessarily precise fine movements. Why do you think people like Rocket Launchers? Unless that is, it's a 'realistic' FPS. In that case it could swing the other way. The game is slow and methodical, but you need good precision to get it right. Older games or games that resemble older ones (shmups or fighters) rely less on one or the other and require you to have both precision and speed.
Or practice makes perfect. I don't fucking know.

On the reaction time/precision thing with FPS, I have seen some people with absolutely insane flick rail skills in Quake 3. It takes a lot of skill and talent to get to a high level in those games, and just like shmups, some of it is physical or inherent, but quite a bit of it is practice and strategy.
On topic, I have friends who play shmups with me occasionally, and this goes back quite a ways with some of them -- ie, dudes I used to play Life Force with back in the day. For some reason though, they don't want to buy and play shmups regularly- they just play newly released, US titles. I think the obscurity and import barriers just hold people back sometimes, not any lack of interest. I lent Gradius V to one of them and he played the shit out of it. Good thing too, because that is one game that is incredibly fun when both players know what they're doing.
