855 search results (including clones and bootlegs) in MAME for "shooter" games merely in horizontal orientation. Results courtesy of the MAWS database (folks who use MAME how it was intended - as a documentation tool).
Clicky long URL.
Alternatively, there are 213 results for the "Shooter / Flying Horizontal" category, which it seems you are interested in:
http://www.mameworld.net/maws/srch.php?cat=103
Each genre subcategory has a HOF (Hall Of Fame - not the baywatch idiot) to go with it. Users "rate" games, and the games with the highest average ratings get ranked in the HOF:
http://www.mameworld.net/maws/srch.php? ... order=desc
Don't forget there are a few like GigaWing 1 and 2, and Chaos Field, etc that are horizontally oriented, yet play vertically.

Ok looking at my list of horizontal shooters I see that... there isn't that much horziontal shooters out there.
So I think I need to get myself a PCEngine CD, that thing has some great shooters and alot of them plus the graphics are really the best and they definitly don't look that outdated to me (Unlike the megadrive and most of the Super Famicom games).
So fell free to help me fill the list with a list of horizontal shooters on it, I am gonna add some names now.

Gley Lancer (MD) may just change your mind regarding horizontal shooters on 16-bit systems.Lawfer wrote:So I think I need to get myself a PCEngine CD, that thing has some great shooters and alot of them plus the graphics are really the best and they definitly don't look that outdated to me (Unlike the megadrive and most of the Super Famicom games).
Be advised that there are a lot of stinkers on the PCE/PCECD also. Someone already mentioned one of the worst, Deep Blue (don´t know how on earth it figures into the equation).
The PCE has got some good Darius games (including Alpha which is by far the most expensive game for the system).
Other great horiz´include Coryoon, Kiaidan 00, L-Dis, Long Nose Goblin, Rabio Lebus Special, Hellfire, Zero Wing, W-Ring and good ports of R-Type.
EDIT: Forgot two of my favourite horizontal PCE shooters, Magical Chase and Cotton. They´ve both been mentioned before, so I´ll just second their "nominations".

Hi all:
Has Over Horizon been mentioned yet?
http://www.flyingomelette.com/reviews/n ... rizon.html
If not, I would hate to see this not making it as one of the best horizontal shmups for the NES system...
Kodos to the person who mentioned Thunder Cross. That was the first shmup I played on the arcade so many years ago. The Japanese version is vastly superior to the International version that it's a different game all together. There is also a Thunder Cross 2, but for some reason, I find the first one better...

Aero Blasters on PCE is much better than the MD port.wiNteR wrote:Aero Blasters(Mega Drive) is awesome. Some people complain about the free movement on the 4th and 5th stage but its not as bad as it sounds once you get used to it.
Darius Alpha is not a real game, just a boss rush. And it's absolutely not worth the price it goes for.Palmer Eldritch wrote:The PCE has got some good Darius games (including Alpha which is by far the most expensive game for the system).
Wow, that looks pretty sweet. Never heard of it; I'll have to seek out a copy.WarCheese wrote:

Sure it´s a real game. A continuous boss-fest can be just that. Whether or not it´s worth the going price, well...Ceph wrote: Darius Alpha is not a real game, just a boss rush. And it's absolutely not worth the price it goes for.
I bought mine fairly cheap from a friend who´d apparently received it for free (!), so I´m okay.
I´d never pay $1.000+ for it though.
As long as there are people shelling out that amount, it´s going to stay there I´m afraid. I don´t think that a whole lot were ever produced.

Ouch. And that's the regular edition.

It had many releases and The Coop mentioned them earlier in the thread. The gameplay varies significantly depending on the version and the control scheme.Lawfer wrote:Was Defender II only released on NES?j^aws wrote:You list still doesn't include Stargate (aka Defender 2)!
The arcade version has very complex controls, i.e. 2-way vertical stick, 6 buttons, with 'thrust' and 'reverse' mapped to buttons. The closest version, in recent times, that I've played, is on the Midway Arcade Treasues Vol 1 compilation, on the PS2. I've played the same compilation on PC, but you can't change the default controls on a pad to match the arcade mappings, unless you use a keyboard, AFAICS.

If you ever play it, it's very hard initially, until you adjust to the unique controls (don't use auto-thrust and 8-way control). An acquired taste but very satisfying, once you get accustomed to it. There are strategies on the net to help you out...Lawfer wrote:Very fine then I added it as requested, thanks.

I can dig some up for you but static screens won't do it justice. It's from 1981 but don't let that put you off. It still holds today, in a stylized way. It has a strobbing, primary colour palette and nice animation running at 60 FPS.Lawfer wrote: ...

You can try it in mame but it has minor screen tearing issues to maintain a 60 FPS...

Oh, I forgot to mention if you get Capcoms Classics Collection Vol 1, not only do you get Forgotten Worlds, you get another multi-directional scroller (with autoscroll) called 'Section Z'.
It has similar traits to Bangai-O, but without the thrust/ gravity/ Robotron controls... It's also old but you might like it as it's still fun...
Edit:
It's 'sequel' is on CCC Vol 2, called Side Arms and that's still fun too...
