Anyone else think Border Down deserves a sequel?
Anyone else think Border Down deserves a sequel?
This game is really underrated IMHO...in the current sea of me-too shmups that all play the same, Border Down was different and actually brought something new and refreshing to the horiz shmup genre...sure it's not without its faults, but I really wish G-Rev would try to make a better sequel and expand on the ideas of the first game....
I think my dream sequel to this game would be a vertical game that used the same gameplay ideas. I really liked the "do or die" idea behind the bordering up and down system, but I'm much more of a vert player so I never put much time into this game. Also, I'd like to see all the weapons get a massive power boost. Something more akin to G. Darius when it comes to firing off a massive laser burst would be nice.

I can't believe I am saying this but I hope G.REV arren't attempting a sequel for some years to come.
Border Down in itself is good enough and deep enough to litterally last another few years. Bringing out a sequel soon could only damage the name of the (now not, but if a second part would come out) series.
I cannot see much room for drastic improvements at the moment and besides some possible graphical upgrades, I think the game would be criticized for being "more of the same" and just a continuation of the first game.
That is unless G.REV have some SPECTACULAR new ideas and believe they can come close to matching the soundtrack of part one.
I'm with Neon on this one: I'm glad the are working on a totally different origanal game now!

Uh, we were talking about Border Down, but yeah, the image soundtrack for Senkou No Ronde is awesome indeed.zinger wrote:The Senkou No Ronde soundtrack is awesome! God I love Yack's music.U K Narayan wrote:I agree with this.Ganelon wrote:Maybe a soundtrack sequel...

Approach your target and attack! Your mission starts now! ARE YOU READY!?
Hmm. In my opinion, Border Down is great, and its soundtrack (including vol. 2!) is fantastic (I didn't want to say "great" twice, but both are!).
I think that it should stay as-is, since there's really not much of a need for a sequel. Besides, I wouldn't want to have to say that one would be better than the other! I like how they went into a fresh project with Senko no Ronde, so it would be equally-agreeable (and possibly anticipated) that they would dive into something fresh and maybe unexpected. They're stretching their wings and finding new places as far as I'm concerned, and that's great to me.
So, basically:

I wouldn't mind another Border Down at all, and I like G.rev, so I'm certainly keen on more works from them as it is. I'm sure that if they wanted to do a sequel, they'd certainly have some upgraded features which would be must-haves, but Border Down is extremely-impressive as it is. We could just as easily speculate on a sequel to Senko no Ronde in the future, which would be easily-imagined as "new characters, new levels, and game system modification" but you gotta admit, they're able to do things pretty perfectly well the first time around.
It's so easily to be swayed by popular stuff, though. Even I was just thinking, "Hey, so they've done a hori and a vs shooting; How about a TATE vert?" but there are so many already!
Oh, it's exhausting to think about. I look forward to anything that they bring out.

I loved Border Down, but it's too soon for a sequel. I'm sure they did what they wanted to with it (G.Rev was actually founded in order to create BD, Star Seeker was just a quick way to raise funds). It came out great, lived up to its potential. There's no need for a sequel just yet.
Senko no Ronde looks wildly original and very fun. I'm anxiously looking forward to it, and I have no problem with it no being Border Down. G.Rev knows what they're doing, and I'll look forward to whatever they choose to do next.

I know, just thought this would be good enough. Same composer, same style , only better. Is it absolutely necessary it's called Border Down 2?U K Narayan wrote:Uh, we were talking about Border Down, but yeah, the image soundtrack for Senkou No Ronde is awesome indeed.zinger wrote:The Senkou No Ronde soundtrack is awesome! Re: Anyone else think Border Down deserves a sequel?
I'd rather they made a DDP clone. Forget originality, there is some so alluring about Cave-esque games. Everyone (including me) screams like 9-year old girls when a new cave game is announced so I know I can;t be too wrong. Plus I found border down too hard and it made me mad. So I guess that the real reason I don't want a sequel - although I would probably still buy it thanks to this forum having some powers that make me buy every game mentioned. Stupid Terra Cresta 3D purchase....tehkao wrote:This game is really underrated IMHO...in the current sea of me-too shmups that all play the same, Border Down was different and actually brought something new and refreshing to the horiz shmup genre...sure it's not without its faults, but I really wish G-Rev would try to make a better sequel and expand on the ideas of the first game....
It would be interesting if Taito would commission to G.Rev a Darius game. You would have G.Rev (who all worked on G.Darius) to produce an OFFICIAL Darius sequel after the UNOFFICIAL sequel (i.e. Border Down, in case anyone has doubts...). So they would end up like Treasure, doing sequels for their former employer. Bizarre, some G.Rev members worked on Gradius V, btw...

Man... I haven't been on the boards for a while but I remember a time when Border Down was squated on by the majority of folks here as being sub-par and even a bit bland (sonically, visually and gameplay-wise). I'm amazed at the turnaround on this title - it seems to be getting cult-like status these days. I always liked it - it was the _other_ high score thread I ran but it didn't have a huge number of participants.BulletMagnet wrote:At this point I'd probably be more eager to see a lower-priced port of the first BD on another system, so I would have a chance to buy it at a non-ridiculous price.
Makes me long even more for Trizeal... general concensus "meh" shmups sometimes turn out to be true long-lasting gems after the initial (and often heated) banter on them dies down.
Oh... and count me amonst those that don't care if a sequel comes out. BD was great, is great and will likely continue to be great. Great games should last a lifetime - there are still some winners from the Atari 2600 days that I still play as feverously now as I did then. Longevity is a good sign in a video game and I think the original BD will ultimately have a long lifespan.

"It could be that my view on the absurdness of this story is not objective and you don't think it to be unusual at all but I can't help being impressed by this chain of events."
I don't see what's so bland about the game compared to other 3D shmups. Sure, maybe the backgrounds aren't as colorful as Ikaruga, but everything about the game looks really polished and detailed....
Plus there's like 3 multiple paths for each stage, giving you like what, 18 stages? That's way more variety than any other shmup can offer.

On my budget that's a good chunk of change...people were flabbergasted at some of the asking prices I have on my "take my money!" thread when I first put it up (and probably still are, they just don't bother razzing me about them anymore). Also, I've played the game before and, while I like it enough to not mind picking it up, I'm not looking to spend as much on it as is the current going price. Not to say that others who think that the game is worth every penny are somehow misguided or something, it's just my personal taste...and financial situation.Ganelon wrote:Dude, it's only $60 used w/spine for the regular edition and $70 used for the LE, and that's on Ebay. Yup, isn't it great! I think BD is a sleeper hit--takes a while to warm up to. I also think we do have a bit of a hearding phenomena here from time to time. Sometimes it is just cool not to like a game (or the reverse, cool to acknowledge that a game is top-tier).llabnip wrote:

No one will ever respect me for being a Gun Frontier fan, but I won't let them keep me down!!!

As far as a BD sequel...man, as soon as I can beat the third level, then hells yeah!
