Well, some time ago I bought a cheap DC from ebay ( £8 ) and it came with Ikaruga and RE:CV
Wondered what was the games ever to get for this system. What would people recommend?
I know people will suggest Radiant Silvergun, but Im not looking to spend a small fortune on one game.
Also what non-shmup games are a must for this system??

There is a small list for the DC in the FAQ, check it out.

Well, sounds like you got a good deal anyway so why not flex your wallet a little.
These are the "must haves" that come to mind: Border Down, Trizeal (be sure to flip your monitor), Bangai-O, Zero Gunner 2, and...Gunbird 2 (again, flip).
Haven't played Under Defeat. We're still waiting on a solid review of Last Hope.
Non-shmups? Eww!

I also recommend Under Defeat. Feels kinda like a Psikyo game on adrenaline. Someone descibed it as "Explosion Porn" and I have to agree. Even though your main gun doesn't power up, you still kick tail, and the mechanics are simple yet challanging to master.
Mars Matrix is pretty good. I have a love/hate relationship with it, and really all the Takumi stuff. You really NEED to use their system to be effective, and it makes the games as strategic as an R-Type or Gradius title, though much faster and bullet-helly.
