NES RPG's

Post by Andi »

I've been playing fewer shooters in favor of more RPG's recently. I've played all the decent RPG's I can get my hands on for my Saturn and Genesis and have been looking for some new ones on my NES.

I've beaten all the classics (Dragon Warrior series, Final Fantasy, Ultima series, Wizardry series) and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to some lesser known but still cheap and readily available American released NES RPG's I could sink my teeth into.

My most recent pruchases have been Little Ninja Brothers and Destiny of an Emperor which I am enjoying a great deal. I'm especially fond of first-person RPG's (yes, I've already beaten Dungeon Magic as well).

Thanks for the help.

Crystalis is a cool action RPG to try.

Fanaxadu is also a great some to play if you are in the Metroid/Zelda2 mood.

I heard some good things about Magic of Sharazade and I remember liking it when I played it. It's a mix of Zelda like action-RPG and turn based battle system. EB Games has it for cheap. http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/product/194629.asp

I really like Flying Warriors (one of Culture Brain's Hiryuu no Ken games Americanized). It's a fairly short sidescrolling ARPG that plays like a fighter at times.

You might try Just Breed if you like strategy RPG's. The translated ROM image is readily available as long as you're not morally opposed to emulation. :P

Gotta second the suggestion for Crystalis, awesome game.

I've already beaten Faxandu (which was annoyingly hard) and Crystalis. Both were great fun though. Princess Salad is more of an adventure game though (no battling or leveling).

Now Flying Warriors (I love Kung-Fu Heroes and Little Ninja Brothers) and Magic of Sharazade sound like something though (and both are pretty cheap)! Thanks a lot.

Faxanadu is pretty good, although there are better Dragon Slayer games out there. You might like Legacy of the Wizard (AKA Dragon Slayer IV) if you're in to Falcom stuff.

As far as traditional RPGs go, check out Ghost Lion. It's not as good as Dragon Warrior or Final Fantasy, but it's pretty good.

I have Legacy of the Wizard (although it isn't too much of an RPG). It's fun, but I've never gotten to into it.

Legend of Ghost Lion doesn't seem like it would strike me. You level up based on finding objects (ala Zelda) rather than monster battles. However, thank you for point this game out, it's existence is an obscure bit of NES knowledge.

I got Legend of the Ghost Lion last summer, it's a Zelda clone, fo sho. Darned fine Zelda clone, tho.

It's not an RPG at all, however. I consider Zelda and Zelda-esque games to be adventure titles.

Another suggestion when you're in the mood for a side-scrolling ARPG like Zelda 2 or Metroid is Battle of Olympus. Good Greek mythology themed game.

I think you're confusing it with a different game. Ghost Lion is a turn based RPG.

Reviews I read said that they did as well. The only thing Zelda-esque is getting more powerful with items and not EXP.
