Wii VC & Flash Shmups Thread
We'll just make this thread for all Wii Virtual Console games and Wii compatible Flash shmups...because we can...
In America, New VC games come out every monday.
In Europe, New VC games come out every friday.

VIRTUAL CONSOLE
(Edit 10-8)
For a glory of the forum, it'd be best to keep note on what regions are getting what shmups on their VC. Anybody know of more as they come up, talk on the thread.

I just downloaded it and there doesn't seem to be any glaring problems. I haven't messed with it too much, though - couple plays each of the 2 and 5 minute modes, then got back to Zelda.
I gotta say, though, it's kind of hard playing with the wiimote on its side - besides the obvious ergonomic problems with using it this way, the 1 and 2 buttons are small and slippery, and - (select) and + (run) buttons are impossible to get to without looking. Time to pony up more cash for yet another add-on controller, I guess

Yeah, Altered Beast and Zelda 1 suck with Wiimote too.
Bah...component cables, classic controllers, retail points cards, nunchucks, wi-fi, sensor bar wires, change-a-batteries....
I feel like I need to assemble Voltron just to get anything done with this console.

Erm, how´s the classic controller by the way? I really hope the d-pad isn´t like the DS lite one, or as I like to call it, "where did 4 of my 8 directions go?"-piece of aargh. Might be because they thought that most games on the DS are either platformers, puzzlers and touch-games anyway, but a responsive d-pad for the VC should be mandatory. Come on, Nintendo invented the d-pad.
Aside from that, this thing looks sweet, and as much as I look forward to "the revolution", I like the fact that a major console has controllers with prominent d-pads. So, any impressions so far?

I'm loving Super Star Soldier, even with the Wii Remote. I think the biggest problem is getting used to the overall feel of the remote vs. a Turbo/NES controller. I plan to pick up a Classic controller as soon as they come back in stock.
One thing is for sure: the emulation is dead on! I just hope that they keep the TG16/PCE shooter titles coming. Can wait for Blazing Lazers or Soldier Blade. And on the adventure/action gaming end, Legendary Axe II would be nice...

This is my first experience with SSS. It feels kinda like Super Aleste (freezing powerups, "special" lives that make you respawn in place, etc.)
It's a nice title, though I'm having trouble hitting the 1 and 2 buttons on my Wiimote because I put a controller glove on it.
I tried that Pelican classic controller for the GC, and needless to say I'm thinking about forking it over at the local flea market sometime in the near-future.

I D/L Super Star Soldier, its cool, harder than I remember. I got to level 4 so far, its saved there, that’s right - when you exit the game, temp save state
It runs in progressive scan and looks great, the emu doesn’t know that the system is in widescreen so its streches on my TV. I change the setting on my TV for 4:3 and its looks perfect. Its not pixilated at all like it would be if I hooked up the acual system. The game looks, sounds, and plays great. The classic controller is great with this game, you will have to try it!
The game took like 5 seconds to D/L its like 47 blocks or something.
P.S. I can’t wait to D/L gunstar heroes!!!!!!!!!!!

That's known as filtering. The Wii probably doesn't support TG-16's funky resolution, so they scaled it to 640x480i. Looks blurry as hell in my opinion, but then again, I'm practically a pixel fetishist so your milage may vary.
Good luck or cry.
Very cool many people now get to play classics like SSS and that Nintendo is going to the trouble of keeping the resolution on older games proper. Now if only they'd upload a lot more games and let NA gamers try out the MSX. Region lock on VC =
Anyways, I have both my Hori pad and Wavebird waiting for when I get my Wii and try out the VC.

Well ya its scalled, its like Magic Engine w/o scanlines enabled (it is in 480p too by the way). But on the PC it looks blurry. On my 47inch HDTV it look great, it may be scalled but who cares it plays, sounds and looks great. It doesn't look pixelated at all, im not saying it looks perfect, but if I hooked up the system to my system it would look like crap.Balzac wrote:http://222b.livejournal.com/144560.htmlanimefanjr wrote: Its not pixilated at all like it would be if I hooked up the acual system.

Fact is, they did a great emulation job on the Wii.

I'm sure if you play it on the VC you won't have a problem with it, I got my oldschool systems too and I love them. Not or ever having a TG-16 this rocks, and its not blurry at all. We know it had to be scalled, but it doesn't look like it.Ceph wrote:I know I'm beginning to sound like a broken record: Nothing beats playing Super Star Soldier with my real PC Engine (which is RGB-modded). I know some of the SNES, Genesis and N64 games I have, I will get on VC. In 480p they look crisp and more like they do on an older TV. I plug the systems onto my HDTV they look really bad, espically the Genesis.

So (not that you'd need one for this game) do the VC games come with "virtual instructions"; anything like what Activision did with Activision Anthology?
That VC controller looks sexy!
I wonder why they went with 2 analog sticks, when the N64 controller had only one?

My friend picked up a classic controller from his manager (Gamestop employee) who was given a bunch of free Wii stuff from Nintendo, but doesn't own a Wii. Anyways, I decided to download Super Star Soldier, and it very nice. The Classic controller's d-pad is VERY NICE. I like it a lot. More akin to the DS (non-lite) d-pad (only a bit larger) than anything else I can think of, which is definately a good thing IMHO. I'm also glad to know I'm not the only one who dislikes the loss of the diagonals on the lite pad.
As for the dual-analog... The second analog stick probably takes place of the C-Buttons. Since WITH the C buttons, the N64 controller had 6 face buttons, and the classic controller has only 4. That, or there will be Wii games that support the classic controller and don't use the wiimote for gameplay. Some games would just work better without the wiimote, ya know?

Found no conclusive evidence R-Type was on there..

What region getting what games should be useful. 1st post has been edited to reflect such. Contribution from all who see titles 1st-hand or Tha Tube works enough.

They do have instruction manuals in the Wii menu (you have to hit the Home button), but its not as well executed as what is found on Activision Anthology. It gives you the basics, adds in a few screen pics for clarity, and that's about it.dave4shmups wrote:So (not that you'd need one for this game) do the VC games come with "virtual instructions"; anything like what Activision did with Activision Anthology?
In that respect, I was a little disappointed with the presentation. I would prefer a scanned version of the original instruction manual. So far none of the VC games include box art or additional information about the games. It wouldn't be hard to pull off, and the extra touch would make me more inclined to purchase VC titles that I have only a marginal interest in, such as F-Zero. $8 for a SNES game is a little high in my opinion without all the extras that emulation compilations have offered in the past. Unless Nintendo gives us a little more in the way of presentation, my SNES & Genesis VC collections will be comprised of personal must-haves only.
At least the emulation is spot-on!

Anyway, this is some badass Gameboy-Pro-player setup. There even was a tiny arcade GB player where you inserted the Gameboy in and played it with an arcade stick. It doesn´t get any more RAD than this!

As for the GB pic, that was in the Google Images search results when I was looking for source pics for the Ikaruga DS mock-up. This thread was the first thing I thought of when I saw it. ^_^

Yeah, besides which it's only first-party games with the VC, isn't it? If I do get a Wii, it'll be for Wii titles.Ceph wrote:I know I'm beginning to sound like a broken record: Nothing beats playing Super Star Soldier with my real PC Engine (which is RGB-modded). R-Type III is out in Japan.
Gunstar Heroes came out everywhere else.
controller config screen works, but you are forced to use the buttons already pre-set as A B and C on respective remotes.
Graphics are poop in composite.
Anybody download and compare 2 genesis games? GH doesn't look and sound that good. I have two TG16 games and they seem fine (got Alien Crush). Dunno if that's just Genesis consistency or that's how the original was supposed to be. I only have the GBA one (so I must be spoiled).
(Edit)
You kow what? I think GH is a little glitchy. There's odd gaps in your fire and frame-skips while you're running. Just duck for 10 seconds...after every few you'll see a frame of your guy standing up. That doesn't sound like any reason this game has been hyped as long as it was. 'Never played the original, but I think this emulation was crapped on. Still fun. Definitely not worth $8.
