So...you don't have a "normal" TV or monitor at all?twe wrote:Like many others on these forums, I only play vert shmups in TATE mode. I have a dedicated TATE monitor for this purpose. So when a compilation does not include TATE mode options, it's worthless to me as I cannot play it properly.
I have a dedicated TATE monitor. My systems are set up so that the signal goes from the gaming machine of my choice to both my TV and the TATE monitor. I just turn on the one I need to use. Simple and effective.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

I agree 100%. Maybe I'll pick it up for the non-shmups at some point, but this one has a very low priority for me.twe wrote:Like many others on these forums, I only play vert shmups in TATE mode. Well, if that's how you guys feel. I can't help but think you're going to waiting a long, long time for a TATE-filled compilation like this for consoles (especially with the current "fake low res" kick). Guess I'm just not as demanding, seeing I'll play any shmup that interests me regardless of what modes it comes in. The black bars never bothered me, probably because I grew up playing 8-bit and 16-bit shmups, so I got used to them.professor ganson wrote:I agree 100%. But, whatever. You've made your choice. I on the other hand, will hopefully be picking this compilation up come Wednesday

Once you play any shmup in TATE, you will understand where Limbrooke and twe are coming from. I sacrifice my strength every time I break out my vert shmups to turn a 32" TV on its side.
Also, please tell me why the TATE option was put in the PSP Remixed collection, when it is really difficult to play it that way??? Makes much more sense to put it in the Xbox/PS2 ports.

I have played TATE mode on my various Saturn and PS1 import shmups. Full screen was nice, but I didn't think it was TV damaging/worthy of buying another TV/play it only in TATE-nice either. If it's included, cool. If not, I won't miss it. As I said, for me, TATE mode is a perk... not a requirement.gunbird18 wrote:Once you play any shmup in TATE, you will understand where Limbrooke and twe are coming from. Keep in mind, I'm not pissing on anyone who really likes TATE to level twe and others do. It's all opinions and tastes. I was just curious why someone would leave a good compilation behind over something like the lack of a TATE mode, that's all.

I guess the only reason it wasn't included in console versions is because they didn't want kids to break their TVs by flipping it, which is just stupid.
Just my guess, tho.

There was nothing to suggest this comp would have tate given that vol. 1 (which has many more vertical shooters on it) did not.
Guys, I also play all my vertical shmups in tate, but this is silly whining. Most of the reasons to own this collection are games like Black Tiger and Magic Sword (that have never been ported before). And as said, some of the better shmups on here are horizontal anyway.
If you really want to play the 1940 games so much, go for the capcom generations disc.

For me it sort of depends on what shmup you're talking about...some really don't suffer all that much when played letterboxed, while others are nearly impossible to play that way, usually due to bullet visibility issues or some such thing. The Coop wrote:Full screen was nice, but I didn't think it was TV damaging/worthy of buying another TV/play it only in TATE-nice either. That said, I do have both Taito Memories compilations (which lack tate), not to mention GWG on the PS2, so I don't demand "perfection" from everything I buy, though I probably will grumble about it.I was just curious why someone would leave a good compilation behind over something like the lack of a TATE mode, that's all.

I can only think of a few US released shooters that ever featured a TATE option. And it was usually out of laziness that they didn't remove it from the original (ex: Raystorm, Xs Shiki games). Besides the obvious fact of the extra required effort to add it, I'd imagine most companies think US games are ignorant to how shooters are supposed to be played. That, or like someone else said, they fear the backlash of people complaining that their kid broke their TV by flipping it on its side.

I just picked up the PS2 version at lunch today. They exist! The collection looks fantastic - a good mix of shooters, platformers, brawlers and fighters. At a buck a game, this looks to be a stunning deal. Will play tonight!Kiken wrote:A buddy of mine picked up the X-Box version... but I've yet to see any stores in this area get the PS2 version.SuperGrafx wrote:I've yet to see this in stores.

Some Gamestop employee told me that it was delayed until December. Of course, I told him that wasn't true as people already have it so who knows where that misinformation stems from.
I'll keep searching then.

Hmm well I get the impression that they as a company are stuck up. The store here in town acts likt they know everything about everything. I asked if they had any "space shooters" and I just got a blank look. "You mean like Halo?" no you dumbass like ikaruga or chaos field. The Coop wrote:And now EB/Gamestop says it's not shipping until November 22nd. If places like Walmart, Best Buy, FYE and them have gotten this game already, I'd sure like to know what the hell's up with EB/Gamestop and this constant delaying.
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

You should have asked if they had any "dot eaters".
No, no, no. Go all the way. Ask them if they have any bullet curtain shooters with complex scoring mechanics.

Finally snagged a copy after calling around all morning long, I was about to give up and call it a day, then I realized,"hey I haven't called Target". Turns out they had just gotten a fresh shipment of about 20 in, so I went in and got my copy.

The local EB said they would have it on Tuesday.. they didn't. Apparently, when a low budget release like this occurs and they receive no preorders, a store will receive zero copies of the game. How brilliant.
I finally did track down 1 remianing copy at a local Best Buy.
Having no TATE really hurts Varth and 1941. Microscopic flashing bullets make these games impossible to play in YOKO (unless you have a really big TV).
Strider is just as broken as ever. Playing both this and the PS1 version really make me appreciate just how much tweaking Sega did to the MD version (they removed a ton of collision detection glitches and fixed the jumping/rappling). Although, I love how all the characters during the intermissions are talking over one another.
Not a bad collection, otherwise. I decided to try working on an SCC of ECO Fighters.
So if we see a volume 3... what are the chances that Progear will make it on there?

I imagine that's rhetorical, however I wouldn't expect to see Progear if at all until 4 if that makes the cut.Kiken wrote:.So if we see a volume 3... what are the chances that Progear will make it on there?
Even so there are still tons of game Capcom has yet to release like 19XX & AVP of which I'd be most interested in seeing on 3.

I found after turning on enhanced mode (which puts the score and things on the side to de-clutter the playfield) and then fully stretching the picture to the top and bottom of my 27" TV it looked and played fine. I'll admit the default screen size was far too small to play it properly - but the game has good YOKO screen stretching (this was true even for the horizontal games which looked even nicer when stretched to fit the screen). TATE would have been better, but it's pretty playable this way.Kiken wrote:Having no TATE really hurts Varth and 1941. And Eco Fighters is brilliant! Worth the price of the compilation alone! I spent so much time with Varth (one of my favoriate games) and Eco Fighters that I hardly had time for anything else. I'm ultra pleased with the collection of 20 games for 20 bucks.
Now that Varth and Eco Fighters got ports (yay!), I hold out hope that 19XX (probably my favorite non-ported arcade shooter of all-time) will see the light of day.

There are major licensing issues with AVP. I wouldn't expect to see it hit one of these collections.Limbrooke wrote:I imagine that's rhetorical, however I wouldn't expect to see Progear if at all until 4 if that makes the cut.

Since Cave made Progear, I doubt it would be included on any CCC, considering, you know, it's a collection of Capcom games.
I'm not sure what else there would be to put on Volume 3 that wouldn't have copyright issues -- Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, The Punisher, AvP, and of course all the VS games...
It'd be a dream come true if they could do it. I wouldn't mind paying $50 for all that.
