I guess the bottom line question is if the purchase of PS2 is worth it for the games mentioned?
Weel that's depends on how much you afford to spend. Lets see...
USD 120 PS2(JAP)
USD 70 ESPGaluda
USD 25 Ibara (BEST Ver.)
USD 70 DodonPachi Dai-oujou
USD 25 Mushihimesama (BEST Ver.)
USD 25 Gradius V (BEST Ver.)
-----------------------
USD 335
+ postage
I guess if would cost around USD 400 to 450. And don't forget the PS2 standard game pad is ill suited for playing shmups.
On the other hand, PS2 got the biggest libary of shmups amoung all home console (I think PS2 now got more shmups titles than Saturn, if not it still the second.), it really is a good investment in the long run.
New consoles won't got much shmups releases anounsed yet, and it would be very lucky to have just a few of them.

Have you try PC's shmups?
The Touhou series is highly recommended.

Not the mension the Raiden III, SNSI, II & III.
These should cost much less.
