Buying a console for a shooter? Nope. Buying a console for an RPG, fighter, or sidescroller? Yup.

I've 1CCed Silpheed TLP. It only takes about a week's practice to beat and while effect-laden (if you like 3D), it's also very monotonous IMO.

If you don't intend to get a JP PS2 or some other way of playing imports, I'd say it's more worth your while to just stick to cheaper systems.

I'm like, one of the few people who bought a Japanese 360 just to play Senko no Ronde, which I consider the best thing to happen in shmups for a long time, even though there's probably going to be a lot of arguments on whether or not this is a shmup to begin with. =\

yes, i will buy a system for a shooter but i will do my best to find more software that interests me.

case in point wonderswan, currently expecting a crystal and judgement silversword, but i am looking for more options to make the system a better over-all purchase. no matter how jsw will be worth it alone. :D

Not a chance. Its been ages since Espgaluda 2 was released as a PCB, and since then there's been no sign of an announcement of a port. And since Espgaluda 2 is nowhere to be seen, Pink Sweets and the just recently released Mushi Futari are unlikely too.
I wouldn't mind seeing Cave go with Xbox Live Arcade for their newer titles. If in fact PS2 can't handle them, I think the 360 can do them easily- and IMO it frankly could use a shmup. Cave would probably want more than a typical XBLA title costs, but I'd pay it.

Layer Section and Darius Gaiden were the games that made me seriously consider getting the Sega Saturn. Daytona was just a bonus IMO. Raiden Project sold me a PS1, especially with it having the first home port of Raiden II.

As for the 360, Senko no Ronde was a key factor in me choosing the Japanese unit. More than a few of the US games are region free (NTSC rather than NTSC-U/C) or get Asian releases, anyhow.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

don't think that a X360 appearance of a Cave game is going to happen anytime soon for the reason of it not having a large enough userbase.

would a XBLA title not be useless for us who are not in Japan? i would rather see it appear on a disc so you can atleast import it.

I'm going to be picking up an X360 in about a month.. basically for Geometry Wars and Mutant Storm Empire. Plus, Treasure may be doing something with the system.. at least rumors seem to point in that direction.

However, now's the time to grab a PS2.. With the PS3 out, distributors will bring over whatever they can get their hands on for the PS2... all the games they figured wouldn't sell outside of Japan and many will probably be shooters.. budget priced, at that. :)

I'm definitely waiting for a price break, but have similar thoughts. Though, Gears of War and Project Gotham Racing are also on my mind.

Senko no Ronde is a bit tempting, though I doubt that you can go online with a Jap 360. And if you can't, then no Geometry Wars.

If I have to choose between Senko no Ronde and Geometry Wars, I'll take the latter, hoping that further Xbox Live Arcade titles emerge.

As far a a price break is concerned, I've noticed that Target is giving out $50 gift certificates with the purchase of a 360. I can smell a U.S. price drop in the air.

They are releasing Alien Hominid over XBLA. Supposedly great games should come from Live Arcade in a little while, it's just rumored to not be as indie-friendly as everyone thought.

I'm picking a Japanese 360 up just for Senko...since no arcade around here will ever get the damn game in, and its hella cheaper than buying the PCB.

If I had tons of money, I'd say YES. But since I'm broke, I'm going to have to say NO.

Just find a cheap working SNES and pull the tabs. Bing, a working SFC.

FYI you can use a Japanese X360 in the USA and go online just like with a USA X360. You can play geometry wars, senko no ronde, whatever.

I guess the bottom line question is if the purchase of PS2 is worth it for the games mentioned?
Weel that's depends on how much you afford to spend. Lets see...

USD 120 PS2(JAP)
USD 70 ESPGaluda
USD 25 Ibara (BEST Ver.)
USD 70 DodonPachi Dai-oujou
USD 25 Mushihimesama (BEST Ver.)
USD 25 Gradius V (BEST Ver.)
-----------------------
USD 335
+ postage

I guess if would cost around USD 400 to 450. And don't forget the PS2 standard game pad is ill suited for playing shmups.

On the other hand, PS2 got the biggest libary of shmups amoung all home console (I think PS2 now got more shmups titles than Saturn, if not it still the second.), it really is a good investment in the long run.

New consoles won't got much shmups releases anounsed yet, and it would be very lucky to have just a few of them.

Have you try PC's shmups?

The Touhou series is highly recommended. :D

Not the mension the Raiden III, SNSI, II & III. :o

Correct. A pair of pliers is all you need - you never even need to open up the unit! If you don't want to remove the tabs on your SNES, just get a SNES Game Genie and pull the tabs on that since it extends the cartridge slot above the unit.

Thanks for the link, I played Perfect Cherry Blossom way back when I first started shooters and I sucked and now I completly forgot about it. Those other games look very fun too, manic shooters at their most hetic.

My answer is yes. I played Life Force on the NES and loved that game, still do. But I got into consoles again because of Ikaruga. This was the summer 2005 and prices on consoles were within my range. Saturn, GC, PS2, all can be obtained for reasonable prices. Especially a PAL Saturn .. as people nowdays more or less throw those things away. Three wires later and it's a multiregion switched Saturn, capable of playing JAP imports.

Since then I've bought Mushi, DOJ and Shiki2 for the PS2. Ikaruga for the GC. Donpachi,Dodonpachi for the Saturn. And I never regret spending the money it took to get me started.
