If you could only have one shmup from Working Designs

Post by Pixel_Outlaw »

My question is what shmup so you consider best from the Working Designs shmups?

(sorry I didn't play enough Spellivator as a child)
RayStorm
RayCrisis
Thunderforce V
Sylpheed

I would have to say that Raystom in the best in my opinion. (I just got them all this week)

It's a shame that there are only four english shmups..( I think)
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

Hey, they brought over Gungriffon Blaze, which was an awesome game even if it wasn't a shmup.

TFV is the lesser of all evils.
Raycrisis is a horrible, horrible game. There's no rhyme or reason to that monster.

Thunder Force V without a doubt. While the Saturn version is the one I prefer, the PS1 version is still quite good.

To be perfectly honest, I found all the Ray games to really suck.

Come on now, not Force too?
If Storm and Crisis kept the 2D sprites, they would've been more bearable, most likely.

I used to not like Raystorm and Raycrisis, but they have since grown on me a lot. Raystorm is one of the best shooters of the 90s imo.

Voted the best in '96!* Raycrisis has one basic flaw, it is simply too easy if you don't play it for score, almost pointless.

*There should be a thread by Oxtsu on best gamest (and then arcadia) shmups per year.

Either version of Thunder Force V has equivalent gameplay so hats off to TFV for me.

I can say with confidence that although Soukyugurentai was considered, Battle Garegga was not; by the time the latter was released, Working Designs was just trying to finish up Magic Knight Rayearth and get out the closing SS door.

Anyway, the SS shooters that Working Designs planned to release were:

Thunder Force Gold Pack 1 and Hyper Duel collection
Thunder Force Gold Pack 2 and Blast Wind collection
Thunder Force V

Needless to say, even if they were released, they'd probably be going for $100-200.

Silpheed shouldn't even be considered.

TFV wins by default.

Elemental Gearbolt is one of my favorite non-RPG WD games.

Force I found to be fairly annoying. Storm was the only one I can truly stand, but not for very long at all.

I go with Raystorm. I didn't care too much for Series Termination. I find maximum enjoyment with Raystorm. Raycrisis just frustrates me :x

My second choice would be TFV.

I'm always surprised that Working Designs gets credit for TFV. Unless I'm sadly mistaken, Working Designs didn't have anything to do with the Japanese version of TFV. And all they did with the American version was publish it. Technosoft was the brains behind the game, as they were with the entire TF series.

Coop. You're our resident TF expert. Am I wrong about this?

WD also gets credit for hyping up a non-existent new stage in the US PS version of TFV.

Victor Ireland was once called out about that secret (non-existent) TFV stage/boss on the Working Designs board.

Unfortunately, he "forgot" how to access it. Seriously, that was his excuse.
