Recca (Famicom) Question.

Post by metallica_tyler »

I was reading a gamefaqs review and at the end he said this:

"Of all the indie/homebrew games I've played, Recca is BY FAR the best. Five stars."

http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/nes/review/R71940.html

There is the link to the review.

Now I own the Recca Cartridge on the famicom and I thought this game was officially released? Do I own a pirate or...? I'm a little confused.

He's an idiot. Recca did get a normal, commercial, official release.

Erm no! Well apart maybe for the idiot (with good taste though) part then.

Recca was NOT commercially released, but was made specially for a Summer Carnival shooting competition (the one of '92). So it was never officially available in shops and whatever.

By far the best shmup on the NES though. Absolutely stunning!

Personally never played that game so I can't compare.

Here's a nice review of it though:

http://www.digitpress.com/reviews/crisisforce.htm
Crisis Force is an outstanding shooter, ranking up there with such great overhead NES shooters like Zanac, Gun*Nac, Star Soldier, and the incredible Recca (graphically it puts all of them to shame, but gameplay-wise it's comparable to those four).
So besides recca's graphical superiority, the games seem to be of comparable quality. And that can only mean Crisis Force is really good.

I'd have to disagree there. I have a complete Recca, with box and manual and all. I doubt the publisher had bothered to create those for a game that would just be used in Summer Carnival where nobody would see those. The few PCE hu-cards that were made for this very purpose (Soldier Blade Special, etc.) are hu-card only.

Also, Recca has a Normal game made that takes about 20 minutes to complete - no sense in having that in a Summer Carnival -game (the Normal game mode was missing from the aforementioned special versions of hu-cards).

I never ever read about a complete copy of Recca, and was told only official carts from the tournament existed.
I've read about bootlegged Recca copies with extras though. But then again those are usually easily recognised and I think your argument about the "normal" game is a very good one.

I stand corrected. :)

Yea well thi game is absolutely amazing. I can't believe what i'm playing when I see this game. It's insane... it's definitely faster than a lot of other shooters that's for sure.

My jaw dropped in the 2nd stage where they use those warpy effects and when the snakes come out. I also loved how you flew forward to the first snake then flew backwards insanely fast back through the level.

I wish the game had continues and i've only gotten through Stage 2. Very amazing game.

Thanks for the link! I think the reviewer is saying that Crisis Force has the best graphics tho.

Reading that part again, I admit I could have misread that part.
Hard to believe any other Famicom shmup could put Recca's graphics "to shame" though.

Now I really want to give this one a try...

Crisis Force does have quite a lot of parallax scrolling... Yakumo reviewed it in volume 9 of RetroCore.

Who developed Recca anyways?

Isn't Naxat Soft just the publisher?

i think recca is way better than crisisforce. crisisforce is barren in comparison action-wise, although it does look heavenly. also (lung crushing difficulty aside) recca is more player friendly. whenever i play crisisforce i find myself confused at one point or another about weapon usage and whatnot. but i'm an idiot so...

I've heard that Recca was developed by some programmers that later went on to form Raizing. Don't know how much truth is in that.

I don't know the name of the development team though.

From my experience, which is all emulated, I don't like Crisis Force a whole lot. Either nothing's happening, or there's more slowdown than anything. Recovering from death is painful, and I didn't find the game very engaging. The graphics are really good. It's got nothing like the waving in Recca, but it does nice parallax stuff. There's more detail in the backgrounds, and everything stays on screen long enough that you can actually get a good look at it.

Recca has a bunch of slowdown, at least on emulators, but I find it just tolerable. Having spent possibly 50+ hours playing it, it's not very difficult any more, just relaxing and fun (unless I'm trying to beat hard mode...). I wrote a brief ST on it a while ago.

Considering how long I've played Recca I feel bad about not having a copy, but, well, they're not easy to come by.

Heh. I was quite sure of its commercial release, as I am the proud owner of a complete one as well.

Thread bump!

What emulator would you recommend playing Recca with? I tried it on Nestopia and Nesticle, and I couldn`t determine if some graphical glitches game from the game or the emulator - all I know is that the game tends to flicker quite much.

you are familiar with the nintendo, no?

flicker is a common limitation of the console (reasons for this someone else can explain). some emulators include options so you can turn off the sprite limitations per line.

I always thought flickering is to extend the number of sprites by altering their display. So yeah, I know flickering is normal - I was more asking because of game speed, correct music playback etc.

So, how much does a cart-only of this game usually sell for?

I'm just curious. Is "Recca" the orignal title of the game? Are there any other alternative names for it? I can't seem to find it on my NES emulator.

Crisis Force is good, but it's either REALLY action heavy, or really slow-paced. It's not as steady as you'd prefer. However, the two-player simultaneous play with a combined ship is AMAZING, and the parallax is unsurpassed on the Famicom IMO. As for Recca...haven't snagged one...yet :)
