How did Cave get their name?

Post by mainpatr1 »

The name "Cave" normally doesn't make me think of shmups.

I just have been wondering where they got their name.

That's sort of an interesting topic...I wonder where a lot of VG companies (shmup-centric or not) came up with their names from. Heck, the same goes for just about any company, really.

As for the actual question, I have no clue, heh heh. Maybe one of our Japanese-speaking/reading members could see if their homepage says anything about it.

I'd guess it's a play on Seibu, who's shamelessly copied from Toaplan until Raiden DX and Raiden Fighters.

Coincidence, I would guess. Japanese companies in all industries have silly names that have nothing to do w/ their products/services. On that note, the Japanese language has very creative (as well as stupid) ways of making acronyms and abbreviations that make little since, so who the fuck knows.

CAPCOM is a word play on their early years mascot, CAPtain COMmando. He needs to make a comeback in a new Mercs game, ala Neo Contra style!

I'm with BM for a couple reasons.
Captain Commando came out initially in 1989* and well Capcom was around before then...

Unless he was in other games?

Correct.
The Cap was the main character in Section Z for the NES, and he appeared in instruction manuals for games as well.
His own game didn't come out until 1991, not '89.

I have an old Famitsu magazine that has a short article on the origins of several game companies' names. I'll have to dig it out and translate it. Stay tuned...

Konami = Kozuki, Nakama, Matsuda (the three founders)

G.Rev /G.Revolution = the "G" represents "G Darius", the game the G.rev Team worked on before going independent

Toaplan = East Asia Plan

SNK = Shin Nihon Kikaku (New Japan Project)

Psikyo = not about this. the two characters mean "colorful" and "capital"

Namco = Nakamura Manufacturing Company

Namcot (seen on all Namco homeconsole releases until the mid-90s) = Namco Taku (Taku = home)

Irem only changed it to that designation later. The original meaning was International Rental Electronics Machines

Are you sure about that? What did G Darius mean in the first place? I remember someone mentioning the name G.Rev could be related to NAOMI BIOS. Hiroyuki Maruyama says it's a secret...

Don't remember where I read it, I think it was DCS or something.

Afaik G Darius stands for Great Darius.

Or was it Gangsta Darius? "Warnizzle! Huge Battleshizzle Snoop Fishy Fish approaching fo' shizzle chuuch!" :lol:

According to the latest interview, the shacho said, "It stands for Game Revolution, the origins of which are a secret".
The name "Cave" normally doesn't make me think of shmups.
Square doesn't make me think of RPGs. Well... it didn't until about Final Fantasy 38.

Kiken was right, it's Gigantic.
The ex-Taito team that formed G.rev only made their name as a homage in that form, as it means Game Revolution when unabbreviated.

edit: Gaijinpunch beat me to it, like 6 hours ago :oops:

Truly classic Japanese weirdism. I love it. They're so unembarrased by it.

Indeed! One can only wonder what the creators were on when they came up with that name. I still chuckle whenever I see their ads in Arcadia magazine. :)
