Also note that, unless they've changed, you can't reprogram the Hotrods. Personally, I have my X-Arcade set up so that the three primary buttons are mapped Z,X,C so that I can easily play Japanese PC shmups.

Should I got with solo or duo? the price difference is 30$
I would get the duo, in case you and a buddy wanna play some fighters or beat-em-ups. Don't worry about swapping the sticks and buttons till you give it a try. I think to most people the difference between the stock X-Arcade sticks and Happs isn't very noticeable. Its just us crazy dorks who spend WAY too much time with this stuff that can tell they're different.
If you tool around inside the X-Arcade enough, and get the Super-style micros bent (carefully) properly, the difference is negligable....until you try to pull off Street Fighter super moves. Other than that, perfectly fine.

slightly off topic but what shmups do you guys play on mame?
i'm getting into it but it's a bit bewildering for a newb. there seem to be plenty around but i have difficulty telling which will be quality and i have no knowledge of ardcade shmups

i'm using a logic3 tri-format stick which has xbox, ps1/2 and usb as a standard, and although it's not the best quality stick, it works pretty well for me on shmups and fighters. plus it waas twenty quid shipped

Seeing as how he said a custom Sanwa stick, it's a custom stick with a Playstation PCB in it.

My two favourite arcade shmups are ESP Ra.De and Strikers III. I like the concept of Mars Matrix, but can't really get into it - or any Cave game other than ESP. Strikers II is nice too (I have the PS1 version, but still play MAME a lot).

Recommendations:

- Strikers III for fun and to impress people - especially when you pull off the Technical Bonus.
- ESP Ra.De for challenge and fun both.
- 19XX for a fairly relaxed game.
- Guwange for a very different approach to shmups.
- Galmedes if you're an absolute masochist.
