Anyone plays his shmups via mame?
If so which settings do you use to make it the most arcade like look?
Do you play with a keyboard/x-arcade/hotrod/custom build/something else?
Thanks

When I play MAME shmups, I use a Hori Real Arcade Pro (modded with Sanwa buttons) and a Super Dual Box PS2-to-PC USB adapter. I also have a Hanaho Hotrod with Happ Super Joysticks for games like Robotron and Crazy Climber.
I would love to build an arcade cabinet but don't have room in my apartment. When I move to a house, I'll build one.

You prefer the hori over the hotrod? how come?Cugel wrote:Try this: http://tinyurl.com/6dhwnLRa wrote:If so which settings do you use to make it the most arcade like look?

To each their own, but if you're going to be playing Japanese shmups, it's better to play with Japanese controllers from Sanwa or Seimitsu. My Hori RAP is all Sanwa now. I should be getting my Hori Special Edition with all Seimitsu parts in the near future.LRa wrote:You prefer the hori over the hotrod? how come?
The Happ Super controllers are too stiff and the buttons have too much resistance. I keep the Hotrod for dual stick games like Robotron and Crazy Climber. Once you try a Sanwa or Seimitsu controller, it will be hard to go back to Happ controls. The Japanese controllers are looser but offer better control and are more responsive for shmups. The Sanwa buttons are awesome: very little resistance and great for tapping when playing shmups or fighting games.
I owned an X-Arcade Solo before. It's fine for MAME, but stinks for PS2 or Dreamcast since the adapters add lag.

I'm more accustomed to PS2 controls so I'll probably get an adapter sometime soon. At least, once my PC gets here.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

X-Arcade IS bat-style...and not a great one at that. It'll do the job though. Was all I had for MAME at one point, so I'm not knocking it [too hard]LRa wrote:Bat-style?pixeljunkie wrote:Japanese sticks are WAY better for shmups...hands down. Bat-style are fine for fighters...but not shmups.

So if I'm not into building, which stick do you recommend?

"bat" refers to the visual appearance of the stick. Happs look kind of like a baseball bat...Sanwa/japanese sticks look like a lollipop. I would recommend a Hori Real Arcade Pro normally, but I haven't personally tested it with a PS2--->USB converter. Since you aren't into building one, X-Arcade is fine...lots of options with converters and easily moddable. You could swap the sticks and buttons for Happs if you ever felt the need.LRa wrote:What is bat-style?pixeljunkie wrote:X-Arcade IS bat-style...and not a great one at that. It'll do the job though. That's what I thought doing, replace the buttons.pixeljunkie wrote:"bat" refers to the visual appearance of the stick. What are the x-arcade drawbacks? (going for the duo ver)

Some good settings for MAME32+:
Direct3D: Bilinear filter, Aperture Grille effect, Full Prescale
Display: Don't enforce aspect ratio (unless you're playing a vertical shmup without Tateing).
Advanced: Resolution of 1024x768.
These produce a picture reasonably close to a 15KHz RGB monitor.

Kinect? KIN NOT.
I haven't MAME'd in a while, but when I do, I have a rotatable LCD monitor, and I use a PS1 mini stick through a USB converter. The buttons are too closely spaced and small, but the stick is fine... one of the microswitches broke but I was able to solder in a new one recently and it feels even better than new :)
I agree I like the ball/knob style sticks better. The ESP RaDe cabinet at school uses bat style though and I've been playing on that much more :(
The arcade in Hong Kong where I played Ketsui had knob style sticks that I really liked. I find that short ball/knob sticks are much easier to double play also since I can sort of cradle them into the gap between my fingers (on the left hand)... I tried to double play Strikers 1999 at school but it's very uncomfortable with the tall bat-style sticks, gives me forearm cramps within minutes no matter how much I stretch beforehand.

Weird since they give life time...Ganelon wrote:X-Arcade quality sucks ass. As a consequence, they're not very durable either.
Anyway, "bat" sticks are also known as teardrop handles or simply US sticks while the JP sticks are known as ball handles so get used to the jargon.
Anyway I was going to get it today and now I don't know what to get...
Hotrod would be better?

while the X-Arcade is at the low-end of the totem pole of sticks, and overpriced for what they are...they are not THAT BAD. I have a 2-player that me and my buddy beat half to death, I've swapped sticks on them, modded it for ball-tops, went back to happs and now I think I have X-Arcade brand sticks in it. Never missed a beat. I think for a newcomer [which it sounds like he is] He'll be more than pleased with em'. Plus you can run to the store and pick one up [big plus in my book]. If you are going to mail-order, I would get a hotrod or a slikstick or something.

I have an X-Arcade and I think it's exellent. I don't get any lag in any games (ps2 or Dreamcast) except for Ikaruga (it's not so much a delay as a "stall" at the beginning of each level where it takes a second or so to come alive for some reason) and you can increase the sensitivity quite easily if you feel the need. I have no problems playing the jap shooters.
I have had no structural problems with mine either and I've actually tried to treat it hard to see what would happen.
I think it is a great stick but very expensive to buy from the UK distributer. I bought a new one off ebay, dual stick for £45, they are normally over £100. Considering my DC stick cost me £30 I thought that was a superb deal. I bought the adapters from outpost.com in the USA which meant I got them for half the price of the UK distributer.
The only adapter I bought from the UK was the USB PC adapter.
But as somone said earlier, each to his own. I guess all the things I like about the x-arcade others will not. Finding the joystick that is perfect yourself is a nightmare.
Cheers

I would get the duo, in case you and a buddy wanna play some fighters or beat-em-ups. Don't worry about swapping the sticks and buttons till you give it a try. I think to most people the difference between the stock X-Arcade sticks and Happs isn't very noticeable. Its just us crazy dorks who spend WAY too much time with this stuff that can tell they're different.LRa wrote:Ok, I think I'll go with the x-arcade and change the buttons and stick.
Should I got with solo or duo? the price difference is 30$
