A lot of people here seem to like metal, or listen to bands with names that would indicate that they are metal

Why is this I wonder... what is it that links a shooter player to an ed banger

We like underground and extreme music and games, that's not really far from each other.

Mushihime is more symphonic metal.

Ha ha ha, you beat me to it. Playing shmups with some brutal death tunes definitely is climatic.

The hypertrophic cadaver erupts
With a curdling stench as its bowels start to vent
The creaking anus emits a stench so corrupt
Your guts will be wrenched ‘til the intestinal tract is spent

Take this motherfucking Black Heart!!! HA HA HA!!

A lesson in pathology, embalming fluid sprays all over me
Making a mess of your necropsy, just another lesson in pathology
This is a medical atrocity, screams echo in the mortuary
Extra-curricular necro-sodomy, a painful lesson in pathology...

YYeaaahh!! Take my nasty spreading napalm!

I like metal too, but the posts here make it appear that's about all everyone is listening to (I suppose that makes sense given that metal is closest to a lot of the music that appears in videogames.)

Not that everything in this thread has been metal, but I'd say 70% of the bands mentioned so far have been metal (some nice tangents though with Sun Ra and Moondog!)

I think in any given month (if not any given day) I listen to a pretty wide set of genres (short of hip-hop/rap and contemporary country), and somewhere in that month will definitely be some metal, but it definitely doesn't dominate my listening.

Actually, most months find me listening to quite a bit more classical than metal...

Underground is as wide as the ocean. Almost a useless term now though I use it incessantly. Hell, half the metal out there is 'underground-ish' (like some of that black metal...) I see underground bands performing in town all the time. There as underground folk music (as mentioned in another thread). What do we mean by underground?

Ha ha ha. By underground I mean not mainstream. Sure some extreme metal bands play in bars etc, but have you already seen an album selling more than 150 000? Dimmu or Cradle maybe. But 99,9% of them sell at 10 000- copies.
This is what I call underground.

Pretty much is, for me. I intend on hearing the drum n bass albums mentioned a few posts back and as soon as the 15th rolls around some Foxy Digitalis-type stuff.

Speaking of metal (haha!), have you heard the Ocean album, Acid King? Here Where Nothing Grows? 3 tracks, 65 minutes. Some seriously great slo-mo doom. Kind of similar to the Orthodox album.

I likes me some metal, but the following playlist is 100% metal free:

Suicide - s/t
Kraftwerk - Trans-Europe Express
The Fumes - Self-Appointed Guardian of the Machine
The Ends - Concrete Disappointment
The Misfits - Static Age
Crust - Sacred Heart of Crust
Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um and Mingus at the Bohemia
The Hipshakes - "OK Alright" 7"
Amon Tobin - "Slowly"/"Bad Sex" (feat. Chris Morris) 10"

And last but certainly not least, I finally tracked down a copy of:

Teengenerate - Smash Hits!

Thanks, Pa. This totally hit the spot. Now I feel lame, though, for having slept on this record for eleven frickin' years.

Yeah, I was just thinking about this the other day too.

My theory is more along the lines of shooters being a fast and intense adrenaline rushing genre, and metal also being quite adrenaline-charged and intense.

BTW, I gave (illegally downloaded) Helloween - Walls of Jericho a listen, it really blew my mind considering how old it is, but it's not exactly what I like the most.
I did pick up Testament - Practice What You Preach yesterday though. Pure cheese.

I still can't get over Helloween's name. Almost like Hello-ween or something. It sounds so friendly.

*blinks*

If your buying stuff from brad I wonder if you've been picking stuff up off my label too?

Yes, but that's just what makes it meaningless. I rarely listen to anything that sells more than 10,000 copies. Most of what I end up listening to is in the 1000 edition run size. I also like to use the term underground, I was just trying to figure out what you mean by it.

You know, kids these days (ha! I was one of those once) thinks just coz it isn't top 40, it is underground :)

Oh, and here's some more music:
Bardo Pond - Aminita / Lapsed
Roxy Music - Stranded
Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden
Neil Young - Zuma
Love - Forever Changes
Charlambides - Market Square
Circle - Sunrise
Sunroof! - Bliss (just reissued, pick that fucka' up!)
Urdog - Eyelid of Moon
King Crimson - Lark's tongues in aspic
Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom
Richard Youngs - Sapphie
Eno - Here come the warm jets
Have I already Alan Silva's Seasons? Jesus!

I've eyed the catalog a few times, downloaded some samples, but not yet. I can't decide and I'm not familiar with many of those artists. Can I send you ~$30, you pick a few albums based on what I might like? I like surprises. Sometimes.

I've urged Madsteeldarkness (and would urge you as well) to go with the Invisible Pyramid comp since for $40 you are getting nearly 8 hours of music (basically 30 EPs by virtually every artist on the label). This is probably PMish type talk anyway, but yeah, if you are curious in anything, let me know, I'm sure we can work something out. That Foxy comment just caught me by surprise. I just put out an album by the fellow who runs that label, and we've done split releases before.

Shonen Knife - Let's Knife
Shonen Knife - Rock Animals (catnip dream!)
Public Enemy - Nation of Millions

That's kinda neat. How that all lines up. All symmetrical like. On the left side there. Yeah. Really great. Time for bed.

What's a good brand/model of record player? on the cheap side.

I dunno about the cheap side but if you want on the bulletproof never hafta buy another one side, find a used Technics 1200. Used should be $200 or less.

Glad to be of service. That is one of my most favorite of favorites of all times. Also, I need to PM you about that Dirtnap thing. I might be able to help, plus The Earaches want me to send you gifts.

Now... What in the hell have I been listening to.

Teengenerate - Savage (Smash Hits is a fraction better)
Hank Williams - Hony Tonkin' (I can't stop!)
The Earaches - currently untitled (my buddy is recording their new album)
Eric McFadden Trio - Live in the Northwest I & II
The Wailers - At The Castle
The Wailers - & Co
The Xavier Cugat Orchestra - The Breeze and I
Armitage Shanks - Shanks' Pony
The Bellrays - The Red White and Black
Black Flag - Damaged
Led Zeppelin - II
Los Punkrockers - Exitos de Sexpistols (Hilarious Never Mind the Bollocks remake from Spain)
Mudhoney - Let it Slide
Thee Headcoats - The Good Times Are Killing Me
Unida - dunno the name cos it's a burn

People who like guitarists that are totally awesome should check out The Eric McFadden Trio: http://www.emtmusic.com/joy.htm Eric's day job is playing guitar for George Clinton. The Trio is more of a rock band. Anyone listening should bear in mind that he plays only an acoustic with nylon strings.

I will take part blame.

Today's favorite:
Van Halen - s/t -- This is actually pretty great. Surprised me.

Now to give AC/DC's Back in Black a shot. I've always hated them.

Well fuck. If you're gonna go straight to when the weakness started, you'll no doubt keep right on ahatin'. If you're serious about trying to like that band you should at least listen to something with Bon Scott. Powerage (my fave) or Let There Be Rock would be great places to start. The Australian release of Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap is top shelf as well.

Stay the hell away from Brian Johnson and you'll be a happier more fulfilled person.

I listened to the latest Cult of Luna album -Somewhere along the Highway- many times and it's a fucking great one. After the latest Envy one, I clearly got hooked to post-hardcore for life.
