I got Darius R today...

Post by Middlemoor »

...for GBA; has anybody else played it?

I picked up mine for HK$35 plus $15 to install a battery. [Bootleg ]

First impressions...cool power-ups, quirky bosses, multiple paths, useful stage select. Image

I thought about buying a bootleg of it while I was in HK too, but boots were like HKD$90 when I went (at least at all the places I went), and every time I was tempted to buy it, I remembered that I really didn't like the game at all.

Because it's boring and way too easy. I played the game exactly five times (or how many ending stages there were anyway), and in those five runs I cleared every route.

I don't think it's boring or incredibly easy.

Did you play the game on Normal or Hard with 2 lives?

Normal. And I felt no desire whatsoever to "challenge yourself TO THE MAX!" with Hard. The game's just...dull, in a way that doesn't relate to the game's difficulty.

But hey, you seem to like it, good for you. Take part in the high-score thread.

Slow and boring. Not to mention the fact that you always feel like you're underpowered.

I found Darius R a disappointment. At first I believed it would be a port of the Super Grafx Darius Plus (which itself is a decent version). Seeing it cut to 15 stages/5 per game instead of 28/7 really hurt. The wobble mode screen is annoying.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Yes, it's cool. 8)

Not sure what you mean by a "wobble mode" screen...

...can't say it's any slower than Gradius or R-Type.

That's interesting; I'll have to look into that game!

At any rate, I thought that Darius R was essentially a stripped down version of the original Darius shmup? If that's so, then I'd still think about picking it up; heck, SNES Darius Twin is too easy (well, except for that last stage), and I love that game.

the musics bad, in that it comes nowhere near the Zuntata quality of the old Darius games (the soundtrack being one of Darius series big plus points IMO). its basically "remixed" versions, using wanky instruments, which sound shit.

and the wobble mode (the screen scrolling up/down as you move up/down) does cause quite a few problems, and the size and visibility of the bullets is also another problem with Darius R. but i still enjoy it cos i love Darius :)

Suck must be the new good! I can't believe people actually like this game. It makes me think there's a society of gamers out there who adopt crappy games and say everyone else is underrating 'em. It's like with MMX6. There's like 10 hardcore fans out there who swear it's the best MMX ever. Yeah, a rushed game created on a random level generator with three frames of animation per boss and some left over music is the best MMX game ever! LOL!

Please go and play G-Darius or Darius Gaiden right now.

Dude, it's a Darius game, and the series has a substantial following amongst shmuppers. If you're going to say that Darius R sucks, at least try and explain why you think so. And let's not forget that the Saturn port of Darius II also has wobble mode, unless you want to burn your eyes out and not zoom the screen in at all.

I just watched a video clip of it, and it looks as much like a flying beat-em-up as a shmup.

Screw the pedigree, it doesn't make the game good. Here's a summary of why Darius R sucks.

Graphics? Not good even by GBA standards.
Gameplay? Where's my firepower, bombs, capture balls, super lazers, awesome bosses?
Sound? Meh, the GBA can do much better.
Replayability? no thanks.

It is playable, but I've better use for my time than playing "playable" games. I'd have to be pretty desperate to play Darius R over G-Darius or Darius Gaiden. Both light years better.

If you can do other attacks in games, it's no longer a shooter?

Wobble mode is when the whole play area is not contained on a single screen, hence the vertical scrolling as you go toward the top and bottom. The original arcade Darius games weren't designed with this in mind.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Ok, thanks for the impressions. These screenshots look pretty good, though:

I did also find this review:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/portable/gbadva ... 93405.html

And I never suggested that the Power Puff game wasn't a shooter; only that the only footage I've seen of it shows very little shooting.

I think the music is good, but each to thier own. The wobble mode and bullets don't seem to bother me, then again i'm sure it's being compared to other Darius games. I just have to ask how the original three screens could be done on a GBA.

Unscathed, you say that it lacks all these things, but subjectively it might not. Also, you mention games that aren't on GBA.

Gradius Galaxies blows it away. Iridion II is better too.

That being said, I do tend to leave Darius R on my old flash cart. It's nice sometimes to just play Darius on the go, even if it's not anything close to the quality of Gaiden or G Darius. I don't think I'd pay money for it though.
