Baah, why no one make competitions on old-school shmups anymore?
If we're going seriously old-school, keep things limited to Caravan Modes. Afterall, that's why they were designed in the first place.

Heh, if there's Caravan games to be played I want in. But since it seems to be MAME-stuff only that's not gonna happen.Kiken wrote:If we're going seriously old-school, keep things limited to Caravan Modes. Afterall, that's why they were designed in the first place.
In any case, the competition is a nice idea, I just hope our side can get the ball rolling. There's a severe lack of any organising.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Re: Choice of games
Del has a point. The team choice is heavily biased on the games picked....which most likely will result in a stalemate if both teams pick their two strongest games/people. Perhaps a choosen pool of 10-15 games, which are then picked at random at the start of the competition would make things more even/fair? Then picking the teams will be more stratigic, to cover as wide a variety of skills as possible? Just a thought.DEL wrote:Has anybody yet mentioned the fact that 'Choice of games' will land the Competition into certain player's laps.

I went and started a list of all current nominees. Also wrote everyone of em a pm. To clarify if he'd like to join or not. Please awnser these pms that we know who can be choosen as team members.
Shmups.com Teammembers
If you'd like to participate or I have forgotten to put anyone on the list please tell me so.
I didn't start this thread to become something like a "boss" of organizing the team or something. I just wanted to gather our informations that we have an overview which was already nominated and which players are available to join. I sent everyone a pm in case they haven't read this thread and to confirm if he'd like to play or not. Please help me to get this information as accurate as possible.
So, about the competition:
I think the games choice is pretty important, but I'd like to reccomend to choose the 2 shmups.com games after we have decided for a team of 10. This poll or discussion have to be held in secret, because these are our games we have an advantage at. Like NTSC-J already mentioned, team Italy can already practise their games, so it would only be fair if we choose our games secretly and the whole shmups.com team gets a nice practise time before the real compo starts. Then we can reveal team Italy our games and will get to know what they picked.
@Team Italy:
What if team.shmups and team Italy pick the same game?
And also, are snapshots of digital cameras or video recordings of the "real" games allowed. We have to know that since we can't pick certain members on the shmups.com team without this information.
Thanks.

Right. Not to mention if we can only play in MAME this competition is going to suck big time. Let us use ports or the actual PCBs.Edge wrote: And also, are snapshots of digital cameras or video recordings of the "real" games allowed. 1 - The random choice for the games is the best, of course. And I'd like more to see this turning into a nation vs. nation challenge, but obviously it's all in your hands
2 - I'm sure the italian team wants mame and .inp only, as final proof of a score. This is wise in many ways, but again, it's all in your hands. Just clarify all this stuff asap, that's my suggestion.

Everyone should be able to play MAME, ports, or PCBs in this. As long as a video or photo of the hi score is used I don't see why there should be any problem. This is just a competition 'for fun' anyway, it's not like there's some glorious prize at stake.LUNardei wrote: 2 - I'm sure the italian team wants mame and .inp only, as final proof of a score. We have 2 oustanding players (Rastan78 & DEL) that don't use mame, but I would certainly trust their scores. It would be unfair maybe to disqualify players purely because of mame.LUNardei wrote: 2 - I'm sure the italian team wants mame and .inp only, as final proof of a score. Photographic proof should be enough for these members i reckon.

Of course, there are possibly a good number of players who either don't have the means to play Japanese PS2 games, or that aren't willing/don't know where to download ROMs for MAME. Since both of those scenarios seem to make up a good chunk of the High Score forum, that leaves some of us unable to participate in those threads as well.Bal-Sagoth wrote:I don't know about that. I support this opinion. I... don't seem to have a mental drive to really play for high scores =\.Bal-Sagoth wrote:I don't know about that. This and the Neverland's post: in short, if people go around saying "zomg you post fake scores" and other dumb comments, something's horribly wrong, especially when there are a few replays of mine (there were, done on the old PC and on Final Burn), and especially when it comes from people that spend their (useless) time trolling on usenet (being older than 12 even!). I can't care less about the usual Italian style of "i accuse you of something and since i have my dumb buddies to back me up in my lies, i am right". You may actually disagree with such an attitude, but it would be nice to point it out.LUNardei wrote:

Aside that, the "Italy vs the world" sounds cheesily nationalistic, eh. Oh, and please post in English, so people can understand.
EDIT - If this can be postponed to September, it would be nice. I am deeply entangled in academic and real life problems and time is very limited.

I post scores even if they're mediocre anyway -- usually as a reminder to work on the game eventually.dai jou bu wrote:I support this opinion. So you've decided not to participate? Well, as seen that you're a stranger in this kind of context, i still don't understand why you keep on trying to start a flame in this thread. I suggest you not to reply anymore here, unless you don't want to be publicly unmasked in front of you friends who don't know who you really are. And please if you have anything else to clarify against us, do it via pm or somewhere else we can read. This is not the place and the moment for the childish behaviour you're keeping.Randorama wrote: This and the Neverland's post: in short, if people go around saying "zomg you post fake scores" and other dumb comments, something's horribly wrong, especially when there are a few replays of mine (there were, done on the old PC and on Final Burn), and especially when it comes from people that spend their (useless) time trolling on usenet (being older than 12 even!). It's impossible to do it in september, in that period we organize a memorial tournament for our lost friend Asw1968.
