Just saw that too
The F?
Who could have predicted this?

They remastered the cut scenes. Who even cares about that?
But another shmup remake is good news I guess.

We are living in crazy times. As a shooter, this game is clunky as hell. Lol. Still a lot of fun though.

Looks like this is being ported by the studio that did Milano's Odd Job Collection, and the translation group that handled that is hinting they're working on this too. Which is a good sign! They did amazing work on it.

The PSX version of 70s-Style Robot Anime: Geppy-X spans a lofty 4-disc set (which necessitates the "need for disc swapping" when called for). The slick ads for Geppy-X merchandise and swag add to it's overall charm shown in between stages. Cool to hear that it's being remastered -- will it be released on a single disc this time around?

It'll probably be a single disc this time. Times have changed.

Definitely not on my proverbial bingo card, but I'm seldom unhappy to see "not technically great, but still worth playing for certain folks" titles get a bit of love from time to time.

I see -- it has to do with the remastered anime cut-scenes taking up a lot of dataspace hence the dual-layer Blu-ray format. Makes perfect sense in being re-released on modern-day gaming hardware. Still cool nevertheless.

I might pick it up at some point just to support the effort, especially if they're translating it; outside of the window dressing there's not a heckuva lot to recommend the game IMO, but there was enough effort put into the presentation that it's still worth the occasional dust-off if you and/or visiting like-minded friends are in the mood for it.

It would be a pretty great "retro troll" if they did split it over multiple discs, though. At least for some sort of "more money than sense" collector's edition, anyway.

There is a demo available, I played it on Switch 2. The gameplay is not the highlight but the complete package is something I enjoy. I will buy the Japanese physical.

Re: 70s-style Robot Anime: Geppy-X

Upon reading the awesome "70's Style Robot Anime: Geppy-X" article/spread in the slick American based independently published GameFan gaming magazine back in 1999, it certainly piqued my interest in it + colored by the mysterious intrigue and panache of it all. Managed to find an indie Japanese game shop that had a lone sealed & brand new copy of Geppy-X for the PSX/PSOne consoles back in March of 2000 -- was "super stoked" to have found it as it was just a happenstance and rare "out of the blue" situation to have stumbled upon it that particular fortunate day (as you really never know what's inside those lone indie gaming shops anyways truth be told). The original MSRP was listed at 6,800 yen back in 1999 for the PSX version of Geppy-X.

----------
Unfortunately, Geppy-X was one of those exclusive Japan-only PSX stg releases that never got a proper American PSX game release from any U.S. based video game publisher which makes it all the more peculiar to track down and procure nowadays in this "day of age."
----------

Upon closer inspection on the backside of the larger & thicker than usual Japanese PSX multi-based CD case (basically a standard double-sized CD case), it turns out that the entire Geppy-X game is spread out amongst (an unheard of) four whopping PSX CD-Rom discs (which is unprecedented in the PSX stg genre itself indeed) -- everything is running in low-res 320 x 240p @ 15fps framerate presentation for all of the FMV anime clip portions -- some concessions/trade-offs had to be made to fit everything within the limitations of the PSX CD-Rom format/medium itself (which in retrospect is, still very impressive nevertheless nowadays). Sure, the PSX games of Myst and Riven with their multi-spanning disc sets comes to mind as well.

----------
If you have access to a PSX "Goldfinger" or Innovation's "Super Game Wizard" cheat device, you can watch all the Geppy-X FMV clips without actually playing the game itself on the 1st-gen PSX console with a "I/O Parallel Port" on the right backside portion. Or if you have a PSOne console, by using a "PS-X Change" cheat/PSX import booter utility disc, you can still watch all of the Geppy-X FMV scenes as well. How cool is that?
----------

Here's a PSX copy of Geppy-X with obi included for sale listed here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/178195324876?_ ... BH35K07MDP

Aroma even went the "extra mile" in releasing a PSX "Not For Sale" Geppy-X demo disc and "Not For Sale" Geppy-X "Drama Mix" CD to further promote it back in 1999 as listed here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/318475577009?_ ... BMtJaV09xn

The PSX "Geppy-X No Uta" OST music CD that was originally released back in 1999 through EMI was re-issued back in 2023 is listed here and has 13 tracks (with a total running time of 43 minutes altogether) worth listening to: https://www.ebay.com/itm/298401441809?_ ... R-7QstPcZw

----------
The Switch 1 and Switch 2 Geppy-X demos utilize the original Betacam sourced tapes of all the FMV anime clips presented with a more robust & easier on the eyes, an impressive upgraded 24fps framerate + higher bitrate resolution at 640 x 480p the second time around around thus making it the "definitive" version of Geppy-X to play/own outright.
----------

It's a fun romp to go back and revisit the "fun, campy & not so serious" Geppy-X demo on the Switch 1 Oled handheld setup as it's a two stage demo affair complete with the opening & ending anime clips + promotional Geppy-X commercials to liven/spice things up just for the sake of it/for completeness.

You can apply several retro screen filters for that old-school CRT-vibe going on with Geppy-X if so inclined/desired including a scanline filter also.

----------
The Switch Geppy-X demo even allows you to gloss over the digital all-English translated full-color Geppy-X instruction manual in it's entirety (which is a rarity found within Switch stg based demos even nowadays -- that usually isn't done but is rather a special exception in this particular instance/case). The original PSX-based full-color Geppy-X instruction manual is entirely presented in Japanese anyways.
----------

----------
This is one of the rare golden opportunities to actual eclipse and trounce the original PSX version of Geppy-X with the newfangled Switch 1&2 ports of the same name -- a rare feat within the specialty niche stg genre itself and all the better for it. Color me very impressed by the Switch 1 based Geppy-X demo overall presentation.
----------

Here's the LE set of Geppy-X for the NSW through Play-Asia (with an expected/tentative 7/16/2026 street release date) -- it comes with the usual Switch game cart, extra Geppy-X themed swag/goodies in the form of a reissued Geppy-X "Drama Mix" CD (with three tracks included) and lastly, a Geppy-X artbook (with conceptual artwork that was used as the basis for the original PSX-based Geppy-X anime FMV clips and in-game engine): https://www.play-asia.com/en/70s-style- ... /13/70jo5v

And here's the PS5 LE set of Geppy-X with a single PS5 game disc, reissued "Drama Mix" CD & artbook: https://www.play-asia.com/en/70s-style- ... /13/70jo5f

The PS1 version of Myst is only one disc. Riven is indeed five discs, which might be the record for a release on the system (may be tied with Tokimeki Memorial 2).

Playing the demo on PS4 and this game is awesome. The scanline filter options are some of the best I've seen in a commercial release and the (albeit edited) manual scan is a nice touch. Plus the HD remasters of the anime cutscenes look fantastic. I'd love that PS1 copy but looking at the prices of that and seeing the quality of this port I'm definetely sold. Looks like physical is limited to PS5 and Switch, but imagine a physical PS4 release in mid-2026? I'd pick that up if it comes to be (probably not).

Checking out this Bliss Brain Corporation's lineup on Switch and they also have a port of Princess Maker 2 and a collection of Wonder Boy games. I'm definetly keeping my eye on them. Perhaps they can score the rights to Air Grave or Mad Panic Coaster or something.

The digital d/l version of "70s Style Robot Anime: Geppy-X" is out on the USA region Switch eShop portal. If you buy it today, 7/16/2026, it's priced at $35.99 usd instead of it's usual regular MSRP of $39.99 usd -- so save 10% right off the bat. It's a 3.1gb d/l at best.

The physical Switch 1 cart of Geppy-X supports English language (something that the original PSX-based Geppy-X iteration didn't have from the "get-go" anyways) which is a plus in my book.

Gave this a shot because I'm old man that likes old anime. The cutscenes and songs are very well done. The game itself is garbage. Got the 1CC in two attempts on default settings, and there's nothing here to make me want to play more. It's just a gimmick game. Watch the cutscenes and songs on Youtube and save yourself $40.

I threw the physical Switch version into my latest Play-Asia order since it was just $29.99 and I sort of have some odd nostalgia for this game after discovering it a few years back and playing it while messing with some PS1 emulation. At that point it was of course long since out of print, so maybe this is my way of paying it back and hopefully some royalties get to the right people.

Fair criticism that it's more of a quirky "experience" than a great game, and maybe fair to say you could YouTube it and have a similar time. But eh, I find a certain charm in going back and remembering this was a 90s CD game and that really was a pretty unique thing at that time. I'm pleased to add it to my physical library just to go back to it from time to time since it is a rather interesting historical curiosity of the PS1 era.

Geppy-X is also listed on Steam as of today, 7/16/2026, with a 10% discount making it a $35.99 pricepoint rather than it's MSRP of $39.99. You can d/l the Geppy-X Steam demo which is a 1.7gb sized one to begin with. Looks great on the 1st-gen LCD based Steam Deck from February of 2022 American debut launch. The anime cutscenes have been remastered from the original Betamax source tapes and redone in 640 x 480p format to look at it's best in 24 frames per second presentation indeed.

Here're the two Geppy-X music CDs to listen to:

1.) 70s Robot Anime Geppy-X CD circa 2023: https://downloads.khinsider.com/game-so ... ppy-x-2023

2.) Geppy-X Drama CD Remix circa 1999: https://downloads.khinsider.com/game-so ... ix-cd-1999

----------
If you have a handy DVD burner drive, you can burn the above listed Geppy-X music files as a "FLAC to music CD" conversion job in no time flat to listen to on a portable music CD player apparatus setup. How cool is that?
----------

Enjoy!

Bought the standard Switch version on Amazon Japan. Should arrive in 1 week. Seems to be currently sold out again (it was previously sold out but then 15 copies were available). 300 copies were sold there in the last month of the Switch standard version.
