Thank you. Gave it a try and for some reason it performs significantly worse than the regular Xenia. All good. It works fine in FBNeo. May just stick with that.Nugs wrote: ↑Mon Sep 09, 2024 2:38 amThere is a specific build of Xenia just for this on the Internet Archive.Creamy Goodness wrote: ↑Sat Sep 07, 2024 4:15 am Has it been figured out how to get the Mushi Futari Black Label DLC to work on Xenia. It is based on a really old build of Xenia which might explain the poor performance.
My PC is overkill for 360 emulation so don't notice it.

That makes sense. I am using a Beelink mini-PC which is decently spec'ed, but not crazy powerful.

You can install DLC in newer versions of Xenia Canary. No need for old special builds anymore.

Yeah, I was wondering what's going on in here as I've literally been playing the mushi DLC via canary on my deck earlier today (and tbh have been able to for quite some time, too).
In fact the deck handles a load of 360 shmups like a boss (at low power draw). Only thing I ain't figured is why dai ou jou black label extra has audio dropping out completely after ten seconds or so. Seems it's just a Xenia thing for that game.

Man I must suck haha. Can't get it working for the life of me. I can get all other downloadable content to work, just not this. What version of Xenia are you using? I have the latest experimental version. Only one I could really find actually.Stevas wrote: ↑Fri Sep 13, 2024 11:17 pm Yeah, I was wondering what's going on in here as I've literally been playing the mushi DLC via canary on my deck earlier today (and tbh have been able to for quite some time, too).

This is actually the guide I used initially. Thought it might be a ROM issues, but trying a few different copies did not work.joeh wrote: ↑Fri Sep 13, 2024 2:14 am You can install DLC in newer versions of Xenia Canary. No need for old special builds anymore.

I assume you don't mean on steam deck? (If you do, I can post more detail).
The only two things I can think of that would be pertinent to a PC install would be that you do need to install DLC and updates (and mushi probably needs both) via the emulator (i.e. you don't just dump them in a subdir like the games), and you may need to edit the toml config file to get it working (for example, licence_mask may need to be set to -1).

Hello. Does anyone have problem with Futari cannot create save data? @_@"...
For me, SDOJ is ok. When I launch in Xenia, it create save data, and, if I save like replay and game config, when I restart Xenia, it will still remember settings!~
Buuut... with Futari... I try latest Xenia Master version... when I start game, it will ask me if I want to create save data. I select yes, but then it will tell me, that "save data creation" was "cancelled" and it will not create save data >.<!~
So, the problem with this is... every time I launch Futari, I need to go settings: change my screen settings, change my volume, change my controller input bind.
When I check my Xenia content folder, the game ID for Futari not created >.<!~
I had not tested this with Canary yet because for me, I do not know why... Canary just cannot detect my keyboard input... and I play STG with keyboard X_X"...
But SDOJ is no problem... only Futari!~

For Faith,
The other workable solutions to not being able to use the keyboard is to use either a usb PC-based gamepad or a usb PC-based arcade stick with a slight learning curve if using them for the first time (as "muscle memory" improves over time the more a gamepad or arcade stick is used) -- something to take into consideration.
Or if all else fails, why not use a genuine Microsoft "Xbox 360 Slim" console instead as they work like charm nevertheless. Out of the box, the 360 port of DoDonpachi-SDOJ is region-free and will boot-up/play on a USA-region Xbox 360 Slim console setup (with built-in support for 4:3 full-screen running in 640 x 480p, 720p & 1080p resolutions if it needed be via HDMI or VGA output). The issue of playing the 360 port of DDP-SDOJ with a 16:9 wide screen aspect ratio goes away if using a dedicated 4:3 LCD-based monitor and set to output at 4:3 aspect screen ratio -- you can't do this with the Switch port of DDP-SDOJ whatsover as it's stuck at the 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio setting indefinitely.
----------
Or you could consider the alternative of using a stickless controller setup such as this one: https://arcadeshock.com/collections/fro ... ps4-ps5-pc or through Qanba USA's own site here: https://qanbausa.com/sapphire/ It's Qanba's very first foray into the "stickless-based" type of controller setup with PC compatibility from the get-go (aside from built-in support for Playstation 4 & Playstation 5 gaming consoles as originally intended).
----------
Hori sells a dedicated Steam gamepad: https://www.amazon.com/Wireless-HORIPAD ... 180&sr=8-1
And here's a cool Qanba PC-based arcade stick with illuminated joystick & push buttons: https://qanbausa.com/q8-gr/ It's shipped from Qanba's own in-house warehouse in Oklahoma to anywhere in the USA. Quite a steal at the asking price of $109.99 (below retail MSRP indeed) directly from Qanba themselves -- it's regarded as a serious "e-sport grade" arcade stick in the Asian markets like China, Japan, South Korea, etc. where PC gaming is huge/popular there.

I can't speak for the save data issue, but as for Canary not receiving keyboard inputs I had the same issue and spent an hour trying hacky workarounds before realizing there was a significantly simpler answer in my case; in xenia-canary.config.toml, there is a value called "hid" and another right below it called "keyboard mode". By changing hid to "winkey" and keyboard mode to "1", suddenly it took all my keyboard inputs. I still had to correctly rebind them in the [HID.Winkey] category right below it which includes all the key mappings but that part wasn't as complicated. I don't know if that's the source of your issues or if it's something unrelated causing it (I'm on Windows 10 so I'm not sure if the operating system matters), but if you haven't already looked there then maybe it could at least be a starting point.

I have the same save issue with Futari. Each time I have to set up the sound levels, vsync, screen size, tate, controls. Urgh.

Thank you very much for info!!! I do not remember, when I tried Canary, if I tried this. I think, I tried at least one of those things. But, it is a few months ago, and I cannot remember. But, it is good to read, that I am not only one with keyboard setup difficulty in Canary >.<!~ So, I will definitely try this again, next time I set it up!~stellar_light wrote: ↑Thu Jan 22, 2026 8:00 amBy changing hid to "winkey" and keyboard mode to "1", suddenly it took all my keyboard inputs.

Re: Emulating Xbox 360 shmups via Xenia: a reference thread
What's up fellas. Since this thread has some recent activity, I figured I might as well make an account and report my experience with Xenia (Canary, version 60ffc2e at the time of writing) here.
It seems like a lot of things have changed since the OP from 2020 -- overall, the setup is a bit less finicky, and I daresay the gameplay experience has been splendid for me so far. If you had to pick between emulating on MAME or Xenia for a game (and Xenia has progressed to a point where this comparison actually matters), I believe it would come down to whether you value lower input latency or HD assets more. Let's just say that for a filthy casual like me, paying a frame or three in delay is worth if it means I can listen to SDOJ's soundtrack in HQ while playing...
It might be helpful to go through a list of tips I learned; it only takes a bit of hunting to find some of this info, but I still hope I can save a bit of someone's time.
Two important audio settings. It's a little cryptic to me why SDL2 works better than XAudio2. As for apu_max_queued_frames, this is set to 8 frames by default. I set this at its minimum value on my default config and only increase it per-game if there's noticeable audio frame skipping.
Unlocks your downloaded games; set it and forget it.
Supposedly more stable than Vulkan right now, but it will probably depend on your system. D3D12 has been alright on my AMD GPU, Windows 10 PC so far.
Change these according to your preferred control scheme -- at least, set hid away from "any". I ran into this funny issue where Xenia was grabbing double inputs from my DS4 gamepad for players 1 and 2 at the same time, once from the generic driver, and again from emulated X360 input by DS4Windows; setting hid = "xinput" solved my issue.
As stellar_light wrote, a keyboard user would want to set hid = "winkey", keyboard_mode = 1, and whatever rebinds they wished in the [HID.WinKey] section. These are hacks that should probably be left alone unless something is clearly broken. As an example, Mushihimesama Futari doesn't load for me unless I set protect_zero = false in its config.
A somewhat infamous fellow named Mark recommends changing these against what is currently displayed in order to achieve lower input latency on SDOJ (that is, set these options up to mimic a 480i 4:3 display). This is due to quirks with the X360 port itself rather than Xenia per se. Now, I haven't verified any of this myself, but it seems plausible that if what he says is true, it could potentially be extended to other shmups in order to eke out more performant gameplay. For me (stupid casual) though, nice graphics are a little too difficult to pass up.
I think that everyone should experience getting bombarded with achievement notifications at least once, if only to understand that shmup devs of the X360 era occasionally forgot that their games could be comfortably played in their entirety within an hour or so... (Though there's plenty of new Steam shmups with excessive achievements too.)
These are the default values for various options and I recommend keeping them this way (if you must tinker with something, try not to mess with these -- I have already burned myself trying). Still worth checking to see if their values were changed between Canary builds.
Lastly, I'd like to vouch for the games that I can confirm work well on my setup (I haven't played a lot):
Regardless of what you guys decide to play though, I only hope that what I've written here is helpful and not just restating known information on this board. Xenia is cool! Happy shooting!

- Xenia Manager is a nice frontend for Xenia. Most importantly, it provides an easy way to launch Xenia with per-game configs, which is apparently a little unsafe when running Xenia standalone! I recommend setting up your default config file before adding any games (some tweaks are detailed below) so your changes get inherited properly.
- Canary >>> Master (for shmups at least). In fact, playing on master branch would encounter some of the same issues that OP had almost 6 years prior (massive audio delay).
Xenia Manager will install Canary by default. - Installing title updates and DLC has (as of this version) become basically idiot-proof; assuming you are using the same sources for these as I am, it's as simple as launching Xenia standalone, then going to File > Install Content... > double-clicking the file (not its archive -- check the image below). You should get a little prompt confirming your installation with the relevant game icon. Exit out, then finally launch the game in Xenia Manager. I haven't had to use wxPirs or Velocity at all.
DLCs look like this

- As OP stated, unpacking your .iso files is recommended to save space. Here is a guide for that. xdvdfs-cli works great.
- This looks like a helpful guide for Steam Deck owners specifically.

I've had Otomedius Excellent running perfectly.
I wouldn't bother with Muchi Pork/Pink Sweets, both run better in MAME.
Raiden Fighters runs perfectly in Canary. There is a graphical glitch with the first game, that's easily remedied. I just can't remember what it is. The fix is on the Github page.

Regardless of what you guys decide to play though, I only hope that what I've written here is helpful and not just restating known information on this board. Xenia is cool! Happy shooting!
For chowch,
With the current Xenia build, is it possible to output in 240p with proper 4:3 screen aspect ratio via a VGA to Scart cable setup to be displayed on a low-res 15.7kHz arcade monitor setup + audio piped in through the VGA to Scart cable as well? It'd be nice to play the 360 port of DDP-SDOJ with true 240p output support (like how it is with the actual Cave CV-1000 pcb of DDP-SDOJ circa 2012 outputs purely in 240p to begin with -- that's a well-known fact, especially nowadays).
----------
I know with a real Xbox 360 Slim console setup, it's possible to play the 360 port of DDP-SDOJ in true 4:3 full-screen aspect ratio (without ever seeing the ugly background hex scenery whatsoever) -- it sure does make a difference to play the 360 port of DDP-SDOJ on a low-res 15.7kHz arcade monitor setup, indeed, using the uber-rare "Official Microsoft 360 Advanced Scart Cable" setup that was sold & distributed in the UK but works just fine with both JPN & USA region NTSC-based 360 Slim consoles (with both video & audio being piped out together via Euro Scart as it is).

You don't need any "rare" scart cables, any will do. Anyway you'll still end up with an interlaced signal, not the way i would play SDOJ.

Yes, by using the Microsoft 360 Advance Scart cable with a 360 Slim setup, the DDP-SDOJ port already runs in 480i format. Is there an alternative method/work-around to play the 360 port of DDP-SDOJ in 240p?

Seems like your display configurations aren't actually respected when emulating SDOJ on latest Canary build, and it'll always internally render at 720p within menus (with SDOJ proper in 480p) with varying degrees of letterboxing or upscaling depending on your selected resolution. Don't know if this is console-accurate behavior, but in any case your use case sadly isn't supported for now.PC Engine Fan X! wrote: ↑Mon Feb 09, 2026 2:17 pm

If you are that opposed to yoko you can eventually get a true 480p tate setup running:

Menuing is a little dicey; you might have to toggle the wide mode in-game setting a lot until you memo the relevant menus. Not 240p but it's something.

Thank you very much for all this info <3 <3 <3!~
I guess I will finally take this time to change form Master to Canary lol!!! But yes, the Audio Lag in Master is very, very annoying! Hope it helps!~
So, if I understand this correct... I just need to do one big configuration file like with Master??
But then, if I need to change just one line for one game... I can use Xenia Manager to just do that one line change for that one game separate?
So that behave a little bit like RetroArch then?

Just want confirm that finally tried Xenia Canary again and this fixed my keyboard YAY!~stellar_light wrote: ↑Thu Jan 22, 2026 8:00 amBy changing hid to "winkey" and keyboard mode to "1", suddenly it took all my keyboard inputs
Fixed in latest Xenia Canary!~
Thank you again for this! I just moved from Master to Xenia, so SO much better now!!!~
If I may... I also set up these:
postprocess_antialiasing = "none"
postprocess_dither = true
postprocess_ffx_cas_additional_sharpness = 0.0
postprocess_ffx_fsr_max_upsampling_passes = 4
postprocess_ffx_fsr_sharpness_reduction = 0.0
postprocess_scaling_and_sharpening = "fsr"
I have used this since Xenia Master, and I find with FSR, that it really makes the games look super, SUPER good!! Especially since Xbox resolution is lower, and I play on 1080P!~

Faith just want add two more things, sorry reply spam >.<!!~
So, 1st: Xenia Canary input lag is much better than Xenia Master! SDOJ is actually more playable now! Don't know if it is just me, but on my PC... I feel around 2 frame improvement!
Now... it feel actually very close to ROM on RetroArch FBNeo!!
It really is super easy to install DLC now! Very very happy!!!~
Because of this, FINALLY able to try out Futari Black Label and working well! Already got Reco Original Clear with it >.<!~
Even though some parts much more crazy... improved shot power (and Reco options actually easier manage now compared to 1.5) help a lot! For 1.5 I could never ever play Reco lol!
For me, I did not need to set this for Futari to work >.<!~ Just letting other users know can try without first if it works!!!~

It's good to know that a few creases have been ironed out in the new Canary version! Anyone know if Cyber Troopers VO:OT works yet? It's the reason I keep my 360 plugged in to the TV downstairs, I'm still unbelievably shit at it though- damn you Sega and your crack-like arcade games
All the other stuff I'm interested in (Afterburner Climax, Cave shmups, both Virtua Fighter 5s) all work ok in Xenia apart from VO:OT...

Great, thanks both.
Canary is working for me now, allowing replays and settings to be saved. Yay.
I did need to change the config to "protect_zero = false", otherwise I had a blank screen for Futari. Xenia Master was ok with it being " = True".

How so? Curious because thinking of going back to Muchi Muchi Pork some day! And, even with small laptop screen... really prefer the HD graphics in Xenia vs ROM in RetroArch >.<!~AGermanArtist wrote: ↑Mon Feb 09, 2026 10:41 amI wouldn't bother with Muchi Pork/Pink Sweets, both run better in MAME.

The Xbox 360 double pack has lag not present in MAME.Faith wrote: ↑Thu Feb 12, 2026 4:10 amHow so? Curious because thinking of going back to Muchi Muchi Pork some day!
