S-video into a BVM
My MiSTer feeds RGB to my BVM but I'd like to also feed it S-video. I remember reading that S-video into a BVM is tricky. I think there's a rare original S-video input card and also a new homebrew one?

There doesn't seem to be a homebrew BVM card that can do S-video input. Just the rare and failure-prone BKM-24N.

Savon Pat recently sold a dozen BKM-24N after a recap for about $400.shmupsrocks wrote: ↑Tue Sep 16, 2025 11:13 am There doesn't seem to be a homebrew BVM card that can do S-video input. Just the rare and failure-prone BKM-24N.
I bought a Koryuu Transcoder (composite/s-video to component) for $40. It's not that I plan to use it, just as a spare.

I saw an eBay listing from August but I didn't realize it was a dozen! I checked with him but nothing right now.

Re: S-video into a BVM
It's hard to find an input card for the BVM models that need one, and they break easily.
Instead you can find a Retrotink 2X and hook it up to an HDMI to VGA or component DAC. The quality will be equivalent (with a 2X Pro or Multiformat). You should be able to do this also with an OSSC Pro and legacy AV input add-on. If you happen to have a Retrotink 4K, you could do the same thing and the quality for s-video (and also for composite) would be pretty much the best you can get.

Re: S-video into a BVM
I think you're saying:
MiSTer -> HDMI -> DAC -> VGA -> Retrotink -> S-video -> BVM
So transcoding from RGB to Y/C on the Retrotink? Native Y/C from each core on the MiSTer would be better quality I think?

Re: S-video into a BVM
I'm not sure I'm understanding what you want to do. You want to feed s-video MiSTer into your BVM? Why would you want to do that instead of RGB?
The bkm-24n and the bkm-27t are the solutions. Both are rather expensive and uncommon these days. The Koryuu also works fine for converting it to YPbPr. I don't think the result is as good as just feeding s-video directly into the monitor. There are other transcoders out there, but they are incredibly hard to get a hold of and often very expensive.

I wouldn't really bother with it unless you're absolutely forced to. There are only a few consoles where you can't just mod to RGB. The only one still in my own setup is a Turbonanza modded PC Engine that I run into a bkm-24n and then looped out into a Koryuu for the monitors that have zero s-video support.

Just because you want to does not mean it will make sense unless there is no other way.
It will look like shit
Wait, is this about Laserdisc or something?

Re: S-video into a BVM
I'm trying to feed both RGB and S-video into my BVM. At any given time I'll either use the BVM with RGB, or I'll use it with S-video along with my consumer TV which is S-video only. Having both running via S-video at the same time would be kind of cool. The source is a MiSTer.

Gotcha. Have you considered coming at it from the other way? RGB to S-video.shmupsrocks wrote: ↑Wed Sep 17, 2025 5:01 pm I'm trying to feed both RGB and S-video into my BVM. If I had an s-video only CRT in my setup that is the way I'd go rather than trying to double up on connections.

I've bought one of Wakabavideo's Euro Scart to RCA Composite Video & S-Video convertor -- it needs at mininum, 5v @ 1a usb A/C adapter to function properly. An internal white LED comes on inside the metal closure to indicate that it's powered up/working as originally intended. I bought RGB's HAS supergun v5.0 but it only outputs via Euro Scart cable at 15.75kHz low-res format but no "on-board" RCA composite video or even S-Video outputs whatsoever. This particular Scart to CVBS & S-Video convertor does the trick indeed. RGB's older HAS superguns had the option with the right "add-on" upgrade, both composite video & S-Video output was at your diposal/on tap. It seems nowadays, you have to "jump through some hoops" hardware-wise to make that particular video output option happen with the newest superguns out there for sale. It is what it is.
