After the recompiled near perfect PC port of Sonic Unleashed somebody will probably just recompile the 360 version and release it for free...Cypocryphy wrote: ↑Tue Mar 04, 2025 2:49 amIs there any news on the release date? GSK is reporting that MOSS is saying that Remix Collection will be discussed at Shooters Fes, so we'll be hearing more around June 14th/15th.

I don't even know the point of this release. There is Raiden Legacy on Steam which people said was broken yet I have had no issues playing it. I run on my Steam Deck even though it said it was unplayable. Works just fine. And the Collection on 360 was near perfect. This needs PS5 and Switch 2 release if anything.

Raiden Legacy is a mess and even MAME doesn't do the audio/video 100% properly on these games. Take a good look at the reviews on Raiden Legacy and you'll see how the sound is commonly called bad. The 360 version is great, but can't be played on an Xbox One or newer (it's not on the backwards compatibility list) and the hardware is prone to dying.Tokyo-J wrote: ↑Fri Jun 06, 2025 6:16 pm I don't even know the point of this release. Assuming this is going to be the standard PS5+Switch+Xbox+Steam combo, this will make for a significantly more accessible package.

Fingers crossed that's actually what the MOSS segment is! I'm looking forward to hearing more about this collection.

I have the PCBS and haven't noticed a difference. It is not like I am playing the RF2 or RFJ 2000 versions which were just CRAP. I will try again with my headphones and see if I hear any problems but I was playing the other day and it was just fine. I wish the 360 version was backwards compatible.Firehawke wrote: ↑Fri Jun 06, 2025 6:31 pmRaiden Legacy is a mess and even MAME doesn't do the audio/video 100% properly on these games. Yes, the Seibu Kaihatsu single-layer pcbs of "China region" Raiden Fighters Jet 2000 & Raiden Fighters 2 were sold with the crappy Oki-based sound chip on-board and also with the good Yamaha sound chip installed as well on some of the other single-layer SPI boards. Of course, YMMV depending on which one is bought in the end -- they are still considered genuine single-layer SPI pcbs "through-and-through."
----------
It's highly desirable to play the actual SPI carts of Raiden Fighters, Raiden Fighter 2: Operation Hell Diver & Raiden Fighters Jet with a dedicated SPI motherboard with the better Yamaha sound chip on-board for that cool stereo sound output any ol' day.

The Fes stream today had a TINY segment on this upcoming collection. They showed off some gameplay and went over details---it'll be three separate purchases that you can bundle together. Aiming for a release by the end of 2025. I don't think it's just the Aces port, either, or at least the menus appear different. And it has remixed music, per the collection title.

Three separate purchases? Oof, that's kind of nickel-n-diming. I can't imagine someone buying one and not buying the other two. Do they think fans will see one game and say "Oy! Wots this? I guess I'll give 'er a shot!"
Not that it would matter for me, I would get all of them, it just makes sense to have a single package.

Re: Raiden Fighters Remix Collection
I'd heard that they're offering a bundle of the three together as well. That's not uncommon on Steam and at least PSN also supports that.
My major concern is if they can overcome the 54Hz problem. We do have VRR on PC and consoles now, so maybe that'll be supported? One can only hope.

GSK mentioned when recapping the stream that they don't seem to have frameblending so there was some judder visible. Like you say I bet it'll be better on devices with VRR though, same as the 75Hz stuff in Judgement Silversword/Cardinal Sins.

Re: Raiden Fighters Remix Collection
This is the first time I'm hearing about a "54hz problem" and "VRR", is it something to be worried about as a scrub or is it mainly for the enthusiasts?
The only version I have "legally" at the moment is the Dotemu 'Raiden Legacy' on Ouya so I suspect it can only be an upgrade for me either way.

Re: Raiden Fighters Remix Collection
A lot of arcade machines don't run at a straight 60Hz refresh rate, and this can make for an emulation tradeoff: get a smooth, non-jaggy video feed or get a game that runs at an incorrect speed.
In the case of the Raiden Fighters games, they run at 54Hz, so ~54 FPS. The 360 version of Raiden Fighters Collection had several ways of handling this depending on what your preference and display worked best with.
The *BEST* solution would be for the games to support their native refresh rates along with VRR (Variable Refresh Rate; aka gsync and freesync) support since many PC monitors and TVs can handle that now. The question is whether that'll be available in the package when it releases, and that's completely up in the air. My gut says "probably not" because it feels like only a few companies actually seem to understand how to deal with this correctly...
As for how much it'll affect you, I haven't played the Dotemu release so I have no idea if they're forcing 60 or just dealing with the stutter.. let's just say that once you see whichever that package has, you won't be able to unsee it and it'll start to drive you crazy like a fly that won't stop buzzing your nose.

Re: Raiden Fighters Remix Collection
Raiden Fighters Aces had some great options for dealing with it, the gold standard honestly for games that aren't 60 hz and are on platforms that have fixed refresh rates.
This was also an mild issue with the Windows release of ChoRenSha 68k, the Windows version runs at 60 hz which is slightly faster than the original hardware's refresh rare and therefore a bit harder (but is still entirely manageable to clear since the difference is fairly small).

Re: Raiden Fighters Remix Collection
The first thing I really noticed comparing videos of the game running at the correct speed and then checking my Ouya version (it's the mobile version, same flaws on every platform it seems when looking at an older thread on here on specifically that release) is that the shadows should be flickering really fast and smooth, but when it's the wrong framerate they flicker inconsistently (very distracting).

Re: Raiden Fighters Remix Collection
Yeah, screen tearing or flickering can definitely happen if the refresh rate in emulation doesn't properly match the original system, depending on how the emulator's trying to correct for it.
I was trying to find this before and managed to finally located this post I made on Raiden Fighters Aces' blending options:
viewtopic.php?p=1551394#p1551394
As per colour_thief:
The Xbox 360 can't output weird refresh rates like 54 hz, so they had to include various options ingame to try and fix it. The frame blending option is, if I remember, my personal fave. It actually looks pretty good and is a fine compromise solution. The best option would of course be a system that supports variable refresh rates, but that's not necessarily something console friendly. The original arcade PCB was 54 fps and the port only outputs 59.94 fps. Your options are:
1. Speed up the same game engine by ~6 fps. Motion is smooth but everything is harder to dodge... This is sort of like playing a Cave game without slowdown, except it's always missing.
2. Duplicate every ~9th frame. (54/9) * 10 = 60. But this means the action pauses for 1 frame every 9 frames. It's jittery, the scrolling backgrounds and bullets don't move evenly.
3. Blend every ~9th frame. This still has all the problems of 2. basically.
The only way to get truly faithful motion is to output an integer multiple of 54 fps.

Re: Raiden Fighters Remix Collection
No console ever could, even the PAL ones. Getting too far from 60hz would force severe geometry tweaking on every CRT as the vertical porches would differ a lot and the picture would never be centered without it. And geometry tweaking on TVs were never a thing despite being technically possible, sadly.
It's 11% faster, no less. I'd just directly call that another different game altogether. The original arcade PCB was 54 fps and the port only outputs 59.94 fps. Your options are:

Re: Raiden Fighters Remix Collection
I really thought Raiden Fighters Aces was considered great, but the truth is it's simply the best compromise on home consoles so far? Meaning if they don't change anything about that this remix collection could end up being inferior to just running it in MAME, just as before?BareKnuckleRoo wrote: ↑Wed Jul 09, 2025 8:11 pmThe Xbox 360 can't output weird refresh rates like 54 hz, so they had to include various options ingame to try and fix it. That's too bad that this upcoming Raiden Fighters Remix Collection won't include the Viper Phase 1/New Version/U.S.A. stgs as they are dedicated Seibu SPI stg titles indeed.

But...how small are the studios that produce/port shmups? They're particularly slow at times (and other times surprisingly fast, like City-Connection). Obviously, I have no idea how complex the operation is.
But perhaps this was announced a little too early, never as much as Ubusuna, haha.

I'll pick it up solely for the difficulty settings. I find these games to be on the same level as Fire Shark. I really enjoy the games, I just find the difficulty an absolute nightmare and there doesn't seem to be a dip on MAME. IIRC the 360 collection isn't working on Xenia.

Thanks for this — I hadn't been able to find such a neat explanation for why half of the MiSTer arcade cores won't sync on my little consumer CRT.Bassa-Bassa wrote: ↑Wed Jul 09, 2025 8:38 pm No console ever could, even the PAL ones. (It can seemingly deal with all sorts of weird and unsually low refresh rates, but then won't be able to handle e.g. any Cave core apart from Progear.)

The 68000-based hardware? That's weird. Never tried it, but it's 57.55 at 320x240 for the Cave games. If, say, the Dragon Ninja core runs on your TV, the DDP core should as well, whatever the result regarding the geometry. Is it sure it's not due to sync polarity or any other per-core setting? Have you tried it with Groovymame?

It's apparently going to have both japanese and international versions of each game. Not sure if that's news to anyone here but it was to me!

Curious about the remixed music
And hopefully it has a normal attract mode with title screen, gameplay, high scores etc.
This was missing from the x360 version.

physical release makes this a extremely easy purchase.
