Blaze of Storm (Terarin Games) (PC/Steam)

Post by FunktionJCB »

Terarin Games just launched the Steam page for their next title. It's called Blaze of Storm.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/3513 ... _of_Storm/

The game is launching later this year on Steam, and considering past titles, a console release is likely to happen around the same time.

Badass name. Love the Image Fight st2 and Dragon Saber st4 references... and is that DUOSS from Soldier Blade? :o Actually, looks like a real who's who of bosses, setpieces and ships.

Fascinating new upcoming verizontal-based stg of "Blaze of Storm" that takes place in cyberspace with the female character pilot as a "cyber diver" (just like how Taito's prequel of Ray Crisis does as well that leads into the sequel of Raystorm indeed), hence the quasi-cyber aesthetics going on with the small fry enemies, mid-stage bosses, end-stage bosses and even the background scenery also. Terarin Games is, certainly, on a roll with it's newest stg in the works and is slated for a 4th quarter 2025 release (meaning it could be out in either October, November or December of this year).

If the "higher-than-usual" quality factor of gameplay and game mechanics featured in Terarin's last release of Crystal Breaker caravan-based stg is applied towards BoS, that'd be a good sign that this particular stg developer is committed to making higher quality and well-crafted stg titles "down the road" (rather than it's usual recycled asset shovelware stgs of the past for which it's usually associated/well-known for). Should be well worth the wait if that is so.

----------
One screenshot of an end-stage boss confrontation clearly shows a countdown timer as a obvious and tantalizing subtle clue/hint -- thus possibly "speed-killing" it would earn more points at the completion of said stage? Hmmm.....
----------

A FMV clip of BoS would certainly be nice to get a brief glimpse of how it actually plays (but since Terarin has it's poker cards held tightly against it's chest and wearing a straight-up poker face, it's hard to assume how it really is in terms of both gameplay and game mechanics-wise). We shall see how BoS fares later this year.

I wouldn’t call Terrain games shovelware, IMO. Their games are pretty samey to each other and have a lot of asset reuse but there aren’t a whole lot of shmup developers making PC Engine/Compile inspired shmups. That’s a side of the genre I wish we saw more focus on.

My only complaint really with their games is that they’re just too easy. And while that kind of comes with the territory with PC Engine/Compile style shmups, they could still crank the difficulty a little bit so the games have some staying power.

Man I love Terrarin but I wish they'd stop making games with the screen off center. Game should be center stage with stats anywhere else.

^His games are too low res (including stats) to make the score lines fit in a smaller column. Being vertical scrolling games I find no better solution without either, placing the stats within the active area or making the active area narrower.

Demo is up on Steam, albeit only for the 5-minute caravan mode.

The Steam demo of "Blaze of Storm" is a mere 37.39mb d/l -- strongly reminds me of those classic PC Engine caravan-based 2 minute & 5 minute timed challenges found within Super Star Soldier and Soldier Blade (which is great if you want a little bit of gameplay to "kill the time & not be bored"). If played with a 3rd-party gaming controller hooked up to a Steam Deck via an external usb female to usb-c adapter, vibrational haptic feedback comes in "loud 'n' clear" as usual.

Was checking on the USA region Nintendo Switch eShop portal today, 2-05-2026 Thursday, and lo behold, a brand new Switch demo of Blaze of Storm is available to d/l on your Switch. It's a 256mb d/l at best and has an MSRP of $14.99 usd with a proper release on 2/18/2026 with an estimated 270mb sized d/l.

It plays awesome on an OLED Switch setup with the obligatory 60fps arcade-spec framerate as typical of most Switch stg released nowadays (aside from the lackluster 30fps framerate issue with the Switch port of Shinorubi these days).

As usual, Terarin Games' Blaze of Storm is a nod/tribute towards the classic PC Engine Caravan-based stgs like Super Star Soldier, Final Soldier & Soldier Blade. The Switch demo of BoS has a 5 minute Caravan mode to try your mettle at.

----------
The Steam port of BoS will finally be released on 2/19/2026 for your d/l'ing pleasure.

I have a habit of buying Terarin games and never really playing them. I've only cleared Missile Dancer and that is because it took barely any effort even on hard. I feel like the heart is in the right place for their games, but they just lack the soul of the inspiration material.

On the USA region Nintendo eShop portal today, 2/17/2026 Wednesday, the "Blaze of Storm" doujin stg is available to purchase at a cool 20% off discount for a mere $11.99 usd and is a 261mb digital d/l at best. It does have online leaderboard support from the get-go for all modes including: Arcade Normal, Arcade Hard, Arcade Expert and Caravan with the "Top 10" being displayed for all to see/gloss over.

BoS has that slick unmistakable PC Engine/Compiie-vibe with it's overall presentation going on, especially with it's Caravan mode. Buttons are completely re-mappable and is standard with it's classic control scheme of using a simplistic 8-way digital joystick with 2-button layout type of setup. Bonus points if using a Switch-based Hori Real Arcade Pro V Hayabusa arcade stick with BoS as it's a befitting arcade stick as it its -- the "+" button is placed out of the way on the Hori RAP Pro V Hayabusa control panel itself and is used to pause/un-pause your gaming session if it needed be (Hori was very wise/smart to implement this separate layout of the "+" button by itself apart from all of the other push buttons as not interfere with a serious gaming session with the end-user in retrospect).

In Arcade mode, you're given three difficulties to choose from: Normal, Hard and Expert. Upon selecting your desired difficulty, it delves into the backstory with how BoS began with you being portrayed as the "Cyberdiver" character to bring it all down once and for all (hence it's slick Cybernetic vibe/visual flair going on throughout the entire game itself).

No option to implement a "scanline" filter from within BoS' listed Options screen but an external SLG device can be used between a docked Switch and your preferred gaming monitor setup if so desired = the issue of not having proper scanline goes away entirely with the Switch port of BoS (so no worries in that particular department). This external "GameGear" branded SLG device works like a charm with the Switch gaming platform as I use one myself: https://www.amazon.com/Gam3Gear-Scanlin ... 340&sr=8-1

The Steam port of "Blaze of Storm" is also out today, 2/18/2026 (Japanese release date), to d/l with the same 20% discount of $11.99 usd as well. You can buy a bundled set of the Bos game + soundtrack if so inclined with a 20% off discount making it a mere $16.54 usd purchase indeed. Terarin Games decided to release the Steam port of BoS a day earlier than usual instead of it's original slated launch date of 2/19/2026 (which is a plus in my book). It's definitely a cause for celebration (Hip-Hip Hooray -- say that three times really fast) with the newest stg release from developer Terarin Games himself being a one-man show/effort through and through.

I think I feel the same >.<!~ Never played any, but watched many 1CC vid because their games... have a certain charm, I guess? But, really, even from just watching someone play... most seem too easy. Also, sometimes also feel like... they don't execute their pixel graphics the best? Places can look a bit noisy... like... hard to lock on with eyes what is going on. And... even if game is "easy" that can still be ok if scoring system is complex and hard... but that does not seem it is the case with most of their games?

I like Terarin games, they are always pretty fun.
But like you suspect they aren't difficult or deep so I don't play them for a huge amount of time.
