Every electronic thing in my house gets connected to my PC monitor to be played at my desk aside from my arcade PCBs, which go to the New Astro City, and handhelds, of course, so it's all literally the same to me. Have to turn off or possibly unplug almost everything to change to almost anything else. The only thing that I leave constantly plugged into the monitor is my normal PC and I only have 3 electrical outlets in my entire house, so everything else gets swapped around. I do not find it annoying or anything, so I'm fine with this setup. The only regret I have is that we are not allowed to have pets, as is typical when renting in Japan. I'd love few things more than to have some cats (although more money would be nice), but the place isn't big enough for even one cat even if I was allowed to have them.

I do have a Trinitron, but it sits on my floor at an uncomfortably short height because I can't find any modern furniture to support its heavy weight, so I never use it even though I'd love to. For now, it serves as an extra shelf to hold my primary Saturn, primary Mega Drive, Intellivision, and SuperGrafx, and it does a pretty outstanding job.

...what is this topic about?

....................................................................I remember now.

Nintendo sucks.

I am a simp for top down Zelda though. So I'm absolutely going to be part of the problem and buy Echoes of Wisdom. It even releases on my birthday. I'm basically spiritually obligated.

Well thanks everyone for not beating me up.

I'm totally old school. Been collecting since 1994. I've never been tempted by emulation. To me its a space saver and obviously a route to clawing some cash back from my collection.

But emulation on its own is just a form of over indulgance in my world, I'd have so much to play i'd play nothing. And for that reason I stayed away.

I mean emulation is deeply important but, you do you? I don't think anyone cares about who wants to play what and how. Reasonable people only take issue if you're some kind of corporate bootlicker making ignorant sweeping claims of emulation being synonymous with theft.

I've been experimenting with piping shmupsfarm through a prettified text-editor-come-browser for a more standardized reading experience. Alas, phpBB's RSS feeds are anemic, so doing it old-school like a terminal message board is off the table.

Maybe I'll make a thread if I ever go full lunatic and build a dedicated HTML scraper; it'd break if the theme ever changed again, but it'd be nice to get the full farm experience via newsreader instead of faffing with a browser.

I wish Nintendo would reverse course and simply sell the roms and let you do what you like with them. Plenty of indie games are released as just the rom files, and GoG has proven that DRM free releases can be commercially viable. I'd like to think that even with piracy that we'd still.be ab'e to make that kind of thing commercially viable.

Most people are willing to pay if companies are willing to sell a product of comparable quality to what pirates offer. That's what websites like GoG have proven. Even when the complete GoG release is dumped to a reputable website like Archive.org, many people will still choose to pay for it on GoG.

These companies don't need to be assholes to the degree they are.

On the reverse end, people like myself are often forced to pirate specifically because companies refuse to sell me what I want. I don't want always-on DRM for Diablo 2 or GTA Vice City (super old games btw). I want to play those games drm-free. If Blizzard and Rockstar offer me drm-free versions, I will buy them. But if they won't sell me what I want, I have no problem downloading the drm-free versions elsewhere.

Having the ROMs be the product, similar to GOG, would definitely be a step in the right direction.

And GOG definitely has its share of precedent for robustness against piracy. I'm not sure how the landscape looks right now, but historically there have been at least two sites that were essentially "The free mirror of GOG" - all the games available at no charge over HTTP, even down to a faithful visual theme. Altogether more effort than necessary compared to the cottage industry 'usual suspects'.

Really weird, looking back. To the point where I wonder if it was some sort of guerrilla marketing / market research thing to try and measure prospective losses or something...

I hate when I talk to or see AAA developers speak about this topic because a lot of them are in Nintendo's corner on this. "It's their IP. They have the LEGAL RIGHT to do what they want with their products. You are not ENTITLED to it because you want to play it."

Ok well they aren't entitled to this money.

I've even been told "there are other games you can play". Word??? There's an Ocarina of Time by someone else I can buy and fully own?!

I am beginning to feel this. If its not the new Zelda's aren't my cuppa tea, leave the ROM hackers alone, let emulation thrive even if it cuts off the hand that feeds you. Who do you blame? You blame the internet of course.

Phase 1 - The one entity in this world that with the help of Microsoft who served copyright papers in the 1970's/80s for illegally making money off copyright product, that went and made Windows that allowed a 100 million other people to build products that fraudently copy every other persons product, all the while sitting there like a innocent child with their hands up whilst making more money than most countries.

Phase 2, build social media products where people can share everything in a blink of an eye with a youtube tutorial, lots of documentation, forums, links to where you can advertise why your a nut job for buying anything outside of Temu/aliexpress and facebook marketplace. All whilst social media companies make billions a day like an innocent child with their hands up!

Phase 3, build an auction program called eBay and introduce a "Buy it now" on an auction where you can leave an auction for 5 years until someone buys it for 50x its original price.

Then all these customers get used for free wares, because the companies don't know how to handle it. Then Nintendo comes along and says we will stand tall against all this malarkey. Customers of free wares get upset "you're not supposed to do that, we've had it good until now, what are you doing?"

Then you see shops/malls close down because of the internet.

I just call this the 21st century. . One thing I will say is that moaning/whining doesn't really help anything even on a mass scale the internet can summon up. In the past 25 years i've seen events that act like tidal waves where even if you didn't ask for it, you became part of it. Anyone as old as me didn't ask for smart phones, online banking, online shopping, games with AAA budgets having reels of cinematics you just watch, movies that consist of just CGI elements with flat stories, non binary genders, house prices 20x your annual pay, being woke, governments being deaf, news reels being biased and President candidates that thrive off telling you to be scared of whats coming, rather than selling yourself on your own policies. I've been scammed twice by joining a scam through social media, got out without being hurt too much but now see adverts on social media using AI to generate Elon Musk, Richard Branson and Jeff Bezos talking about what an idiot you are for not investing in what is actually a scam, but Mark Zuckerburg is making money off their advertising, immune for any guilt.

The internet is to blame for all of this in my humble opinion. Its just a case of this is what we got used to. If someone wants to turn things backwards, you complain.

My opinion, Nintendo is a fantastic company. It has to make product to compete with giant adversaries that can out spend them, out power them.. and yet Ninendo survives. All the while dealing with criticism. Whatever Nintendo does, its positioning itself to be successful. And you cannot argue with that.

I mean, Other M was Nintendo, but it sucks. I don't really care who they get to make a new Metroid game so long as it's good and fun to play. They need to keep it the hell out of Sakamoto's hands because he's clearly lost his vision. If MP4 turns out to be any good, it might just be the thing that finally gets me to buy a newer console. The newest one I currently own is a PS2.

Nintendo sucks I guess, but it's mostly because I just don't care much about them or their properties anymore. I had fun with the GameCube era stuff, but even the Wii I felt was losing steam. I have like 30ish Wii games and they don't hold my attention like the GC stuff did.

Pretty sure that was mostly Team Ninja under Sakamoto's supervision. It does suck, though I'd still probably rather play it than Samus Returns, Prime 3, and possibly Prime 2. The only Prime I actually liked was the first one and I felt that each subsequent one was significantly worse than the previous one, so I'm not really excited about 4 at all, but we'll see. I'm still going to get it, but...

At this point, I think MP4 turning out at all will be remarkable  though I do hope it'll be good.

I assume Other M sucking for the reasons it did was largely down to Sakamoto, given that Team Ninja's gameplay contribution was pretty solid outside of the game-breaking reaction dodge. That game would clean up alright if someone modded out all the cutscenes and dialogue.

I think it was mostly Sakamoto telling Team Ninja how to make the game and they did exactly what he told them to do, which was to unintentionally make something that wasn't so great.

Even if you left all of the cutscenes and stuff in, all you'd really have to do to fix the overall gameplay is to fix how missiles are used (think there is a mod for this already), be able to use something other than sideways controller, and remove the parts where you have to scan for a pixel. The level design is still pretty shit, so you'd still have to make an entire new game to fix that, and I don't think the Speed Booster actually makes you go any faster than your normal running speed (lol why?????), so it's not a complete fix, but it would help.

Oh yeah, and the music in Other M is really good, except for when it's really bad by Metroid standards. That needs to be improved as well.

Maybe also don't artificially lock players out of entire sections or leave abilities up to the discretion of an NPC.
And maybe don't have combat be mindless d-pad rocking and 1 button mashing. Or have complete silence in most areas of the game....and nostalgia bait enemies/bosses over new shit........and boring level design both aesthetically and in play.............................or weird dumbass detective sequences.

Other M was so bad. Glad the series is past that. I'd like another attempt at that kind of game because the core premise is not at all bad. That was just a classic case of god awful execution.

I love Prime 2. Not sure what your big beef with it is, but it didn't really deviate from Prime all that much, and it had really beautiful zones to explore. I guess I can see it being too much of the same thing as the first game, but it didn't feel that way to me yet; I think a third game of more of the same would have probably put me over the edge though.

I tried to play 3 a few times and haven't been able to get into it; I think mostly because of the Wii interface which I kind of hate. It's also way too bright or something. There's some quality of that game (and possibly of most Wii games?) were the overall image is overly washed out and is somewhat grating to look at.

One of the devs from the Prime series died a few years back, so I'm not holding out a lot of hope either, but who knows? If it turns out to be interesting, I might have to break down and check it out.
At this point, I think MP4 turning out at all will be remarkable  though I do hope it'll be good.
I saw some press recently that puts the release as firmly next year, though who tf knows anymore I guess.

That was my impression. IIRC, he very publicly defended his story choices and unskippable cutscene nonsense in the press around that time. It is my general feeling that Sakamoto believes his writing abilities far surpass that of the little fun story told in the earlier games, and that he feels an outsized ownership of the franchise's direction. If it was actually any good, I wouldn't care.

At this point, I'd rather see something closer to a continuation of the first two Prime games, but with a change of venue.

Beam ammo (yes, it's easy to get, but it's still stupid enough to make me never use anything but Power Beam)
excruciatingly long transition between normal and dark world, which you do six trillion times over the course of the game
significantly less sequence breaking than all other games that came before it save II and Fusion
and, most of all, the hunt for the keys. This is the point where I usually shut the game off and restart from the beginning the next time I play it. It's also mostly what prevents me from wanting to replay it at all.

I didn't beat the game actually. I found the final boss to be so ridiculously difficult that I just said fuck it and I haven't loaded it up to finish it off for like the past 15 years or whatever it is. I played through the whole game twice so far and still haven't beat it.

I have actually beaten Prime 2, although it took me nearly 20 years because I hated finding the keys so much. I eventually used a guide to find the keys because to hell with finding them normally and went in there and annihilated the last few bosses. I think I did it on my first attempt... but it's been a few years and I don't remember.

Prime 3 I dropped after like 4 or 5 hours. I do feel obligated to finish it because how can I not finish a Metroid game? Well... it's Prime 3 and I don't like it at all.

I like Prime 2 and 3, but I agree that each one got worse than the last. I don't think they reach mediocrity let alone bad but the exploring and increasing emphasis on cinematic narrative put a dent in both.

I dropped Prime 2 because of your character's health depleting in the dark world - a game about slowly exploring a vast maze. That was an obnoxious mechanic. Limited ammo was a bad mechanic too in the context of what the game was trying to do with enemies requiring certain shots to be defeated.

Quite a few unforced errors in that game. Pretty much every way it deviates from the first game makes it worse.

Exploring (quickly) is the whole point of Metroid, but Prime 3, from what I played, doesn't even really have much of that at all. You use your ship to fly to a hallway (you don't even get to walk there and explore along the way because in practice you basically just fucking teleport directly there), like a straight-ass hallway with few to no branching paths and nowhere to go beyond the main path, walk down it to get the thing at the end, walk back to your ship, maybe kill a boss, and repeat. Like what the hell? It probably gets better after a while (by that I mean after the point where I dropped it), but in the beginning it's just... not interesting level design at all.

Now you could say that that's how all Metroid games are; you walk down a hallway to get a thing and then use it to kill bosses and find new areas to do the same thing all over again, but Prime 3 somehow managed to make getting new stuff boring! How do you even manage to do that in a Metroid game? Prime 3 managed it. Prime 2 did this to some extent as well, with the Gravity Boost being probably the single least exciting upgrade in the entire series, and certainly the most forgettable. Who actually remembers that the Gravity Boost exists? I had to go look up the name for it and I NEVER have to do that! Prime 2 has some super boring upgrades.

At least Prime 2 added the Screw Attack, which was conspicuously absent from Prime 1... but it sucks in Prime 2 for anything other than a replacement for the Space Jump. I mean the REAL Space Jump from the 2D games, not the weak double jump Space Jump from Prime.

I like the health depletion in concept, but it made for extremely start-and-stop gameplay. You were too often sitting in bubbles sucking your thumb longer than you're traversing. I think more search action games should play with mechanics like that, but of the few I know, that was one of the worst about it. Majora's Mask and Scurge Hive were more elegant in this regard. It didn't kill the game for me, but it definitely slowed things which was the opposite of what I think a mechanic like that should be trying to do. Making you fight bosses in it was probably the best use.

Ammo also didn't bother me inherently, but the enemies and the system aren't fleshed out enough where that yin yang resource management (Idk what to call it) was terribly interesting. But I'll say it never became a true hinderance.

Nuance in conversation and in thought processes seem to be lost on most here. But I am glad to see someone that sees Other M for what it is—a decent action game brought down by unnecessary bloat (the forced/unskippable cutscenes and dialogue). I had an ignorant mindset and hated the game for ages as a result, but I finally forced myself through it two or three years ago. I was pleasantly surprised when I got into a groove with it.

You know what, the same thing happened to me with Star Fox Zero. I bought it at launch, played it for an hour, had no idea what the devs were thinking and then put it down in disgust. However, I revisited it recently and realized it’s actually a pretty damn good game. I think more people are going to come around to it as they revisit it with more tempered expectations.
