The way they handled the X collection is a travesty and I can't believe they never fixed its issues.

At least it's a better way to play X8 (and X7), I would preferably play all other games on "real hardware"/their respective original platform anyway, so I don't care. At this point I never expect anything anymore from any kind of collection or rerelease if it's not by M2 or ACA. ININ also seems to be rather good (no additional input lag), unnecessary features (rewind etc) aside.

Re: Capcom consumer survey
The results of this survey are shocking. No wonder Capcom get away with what they do.
Oh, and I hate Dino Crisis 1. But after this survey it's pretty clear there will be a remake or reboot.
The best thing I can say about the outcome is that people want more Rockman. Also I don't mind Onimusha and BoF making it into some of those top tens, but I don't think they ranked high enough for Capcom to touch them again.
Also, Capcom has already said that they had low expectations in terms of sales when they did the remaster of Onimusha Warlords, but the sales didn't even reach what they had anticipated, which is why there were no remasters of the rest of the series.
MM11, Resident Evil 2 remake, DMC5, and GnG Res. are their "best" games of the last couple years to me (not counting all their collections and re-releases which is like half of their output) and that's just not good enough.

The Capcom that I really loved lasted until pretty much exactly the end of the interlaced console gen/the beginning of the Wii/Xbox360/PS3 gen. Let's say 2006. After that there was still some good stuff here and there but things would never be like they were before.ryu wrote: ↑Mon Feb 12, 2024 8:31 pmThey're not?Sengoku Strider wrote: ↑Mon Feb 12, 2024 7:43 pm I think they've always had a bit of Amerophilia at the heart of their corporate DNA, and it's paid off for them over the years. To be fair, Dino Crisis could potentially be a lot better with modern tech (like with the current RE Remakes).

Yes I agree, they would probably improve on all the weak aspects of the game, but I am worried that overall it would be another very bland AAA kind of game.

Re: Capcom consumer survey
Dino Crisis is a tricky one remake-wise - what's the series' definitive identity, the puzzle-heavy RE-adjacent style of DC1, or the arcade action of DC2?
I reckon they could pull it off, though whether they would is kind of up in the air after the rollercoaster of RE2/3/4make.
3 going off-script into bullet time and superhero weaponry almost felt like it should have been a DC remake instead, being that Regina and co. exist in a more action movie-ish world than the Romero roots of Raccoon City.
Imo, they should silo off the action focus into Dino Crisis, have it act as a space to express all the crazy shoot-dodging max payne stuff, and let Resi be survival horror.
At this point, I'll be genuinely surprised if RE9 isn't another step back toward MISTER PRESIDENT! DON'T MAKE ME DO THIS! - they can't help but dial it up with each passing entry

I should probably give DC3 a try; on paper a fixed-ish camera game with kinda esoteric movement should be my jam, but I I keep getting put off by the overwhelming amount of hate it gets.
But, if I can appreciate PN03 and Gunvalkyrie, I can probably find something to like about it.

Re: Capcom consumer survey
That's exactly the kind of AA games that I miss so much nowadays, especially from Capcom. Most people don't like PN03, but I can easily overlook its flaws because of everything I like about it. We all agree that we like those 2D arcade games from the 80s and 90s, Rockman, etc, but I also really miss those 2000s' 3D games by Capcom with all their variety. Maximo, Auto Modellista, Onimusha, Viewtiful Joe (yes I know this one is not 3D), Chaos Legion, Clock Tower 3, Dino Crisis 3, PN03, Killer 7, Beat Down: Fists of Vengeance, God Hand, Goku Makaimura Kai...

I would kill for a modern port of GunValkyrie so I could remap the boost from clicking the stick to the rear paddles. Not sure if there's a way to do that even on a modded OG Xbox.

Re: Capcom consumer survey
Probably only worth playing if you are a fan of the franchise. I think Treasure is kinda over rated. Sure, some games are great, but by far not all of them. A good example is Mischief Makers (N64). If you YouTube this game very briefly and jump to the good parts, it makes you think it's a gem, which also seems to be a widely spread opinion online. But if you actually play it blind, everything is weird, nothing makes sense, you won't get anywhere and you're just lost. That was our impression when I played it with a friend. Maybe with guidance or some kind of tutorial made by someone for YouTube you can learn how it works, get into it and have some fun with this game, but to be honest I find it hard to imagine that anybody ever played it, figured things out in an instant and had fun with it.
It seems like they love to make things more complicated than they need to be, add too many ideas and actions, and at the end you don't really have fun.
From what I know they made Contra (SNES) and look at that game. It's a pretty bad Contra, how could that go wrong? It has great graphics and presentation, so great that it takes a bit of time to realise that this game is actually not that much fun to play compared to Contra (FC), Super Contra (FC), and Contra (GB). It's not a bad game, but it misses the point a little bit I'd say. Nobody likes the two top down missions in this one while they are fun in the other Contra games. The part where you hang on to those missiles while fighting the boss is a pain in the ass and the fights near the end are quite harsh und unforgiving. I don't mind hard games but this one just lacks fun.

Mischief Makers is super cryptic and confusing at first. I first played it in a game store to see if I'd like it. Spent forever on level 1 and couldn't figure it out, then proceeded to buy the game because I couldn't let that be it.
It's a great game once you get it. But figuring it out can take a while.

They've made enough of the best action games of all time that I'm willing to give them a pass on the occasional miss (and I actually like Contra 3). And bringing up their Konami work is a bit of a quagmire since the internet doesn't seem to agree on what games would apply, although this list would imply that Treasure never really made any games as a group at Konami. I think Bucky O'Hare for NES had the most future Treasure employees.
I believe Mischief Makers is probably the second-best platformer on N64 after Rayman 2, but I admittedly hate 3D platfofmers and have a high tolerance for opaque weirdness. Their only real misses (not counting licensed shit they made to pay the bills) are probably Stretch Panic and that PS2 Silpheed sequel (and even that might still fall under 'licensed shit to pay the bills').
Gunstar Heroes, Alien Soldier, and Sin and Punishment are some of the absolute best action games ever made. Even one of those would be enough to permanently cement a studio's reputation in the genre, and we haven't even gotten to their legendary shmup trio yet.
Sadly no, this one definitely falls under 'licensed shit to pay the bills.' Sin and Punishment 2 was their last game that mattered.

Re: Capcom consumer survey
I don't think something confusing the player is outright a bad thing if there aren't mixed signals when you do eventually start putting things together. But that always comes down to a case by case thing as well as player mileage. Radiant Silvergun, Battle Garegga, and Hellsinker are some of the most complicated, bewildering games in the genre but are largely deemed to be better for it. I suck at all three, but I'd still agree with that sentiment.
Alien Solder is massively confusing for what it is and the controller it's on, but is seen as one of their best games by people who learned the systems.

There is this category of games in my mind that I don't see myself being ready for yet. Garegga, Silvergun and Ikaruga are three of them. It's like I'd rather play those other 2000 games first that appeal to me that I haven't really played yet. Once I am done with those, hopefully I will have gained the skill to tackle those more complex games like Raizing, Cave, etc.

Re: Capcom consumer survey
Silvergun is a particularly fun example, since you can sink hours upon hours into the campaign's persistent stat growth and have a horrifying this is how it is huh moment once the training wheels come off for arcade mode. Absolute marathon of a game.
Personally I tend to take occasional passes at training those games with no real expectation of becoming godlike enough to one-credit them; the refinement process is good fun, even if the ultimate goal is a mountain I'm not sure I'll see the top of.
And Alien Solider kicks ass for sure. The 6-button hack is nice, though its biggest contribution is doing away with the slightly clunky Down+Whatever to switch between fixed and free aim. Not critical, but very nice to have.
The biggest difference maker is getting the hang of feeding the super move with health pickups spawned with the parry; once you have that loop down, design wrinkles like damage types, ammo cap upgrades and stage knowledge are all refinement.
