We could probably make a proper content farm out of this. In such a case, two formats come to mind.
Either a series of short videos akin to the Homo-Genius series

Now, chaps. I like Moss. (■`w´■) I like them a lot! But holy fuck, their bullet/bg contrast can be punishingly weak. There are times in Raiden III (stage 2), Raiden V (stage 2), and especially MAD SHARK (stage 1 and 3! 2 is great) where I feel even blinder than I already am! (but not Raiden IV or Caladrius, which is nice, as those are my favourites!)
And tonight, practicing that lousy prick Stage 3 boss, I finally understood what's up!

Seriously, kinda breaks my heart. They went to all that trouble lovingly animating the loading chamber and spinning cylinder. At full framerate, you can even see the cylinder spin down and lock back into place. Tunnel vision methinks.

In related investigations, it turns out the Gradius II font and Moai-kun's participation (w/Vic Viper cameo!) weren't just for show! Konami's F00KIN HARDCORE block-slider CUE BRICK gets honorabru mention, like famous movie director man name!

Good question, Fraudy-kun (■`w´■) I just had a look in the ACA manual, which - while being customarily thorough on the game itself - told me sweet fuck all.PerishedFraud ឵឵ wrote: ↑Sat Jun 01, 2024 1:48 amWhat exactly is the reason for...naming your machine? I wonder if that's it. You can also set it to "OFF," for SIN NOMBRE action! I had my money on it being a reference to something from 2001, tbh. Or FMJ, but that's more NAM-1975's thing!
Offhand, I always wondered if Contra's "Galuga Archipelago" was an oblique reference to Solzhenitsyn's famous book, an extra "a" tagged on because Japan. This makes me think there was something to that! Actually, typing that, I remember Hidenori Maezawa's "Sandinista." And ofc the series' name itself is very germane to 80s geopolitics.
So yeah, guessing some Konami staffers had an ear for world events around then, and Kubrick being one of the 20th century's most iconic filmmakers, it seems less of a stretch that's who the machine names were getting at, just like the title. What an odd game. And absolutely hardcore, too!

THEN, I thought "Hmm, I bet it's something to do with Stanley Cue Brick!" It's a very eccentric game you see.

Interesting to learn that Diane Johnson wrote the movie script for "The Shining" took eleven weeks in it's entirety. I recall when HBO had gotten the exclusive rights to show "The Shining" on paid cable for the first time, they showed half of it, had a 15 minute countdown timer intermission break, then proceeded with the second half of the film. To be able to watch "The Shining" on HBO was considered a major event back in the early 1980s America (as VCRs were still quite expensive to buy back in those days).

Having thought about it, I wonder if "machine name" refers not to the in-game vehicle, but the arcade cabinet the board is installed in. Per the manual, Cue Brick's PCB has battery-powered memory. Select "Ranking Mode" (second option), and Moai-kun will record your name and PIN, with which you can resume play from your last stage reached. (I wonder if there's a score penalty?)
Would be handy to tell which board you were playing on, assuming a Cue Brick Mania scenario, where a place had two or more kits installed.
Makes me wonder if other AC puzzlers took that approach, where you could pop in and solve a few more stages over a length of time, outside of the typical do/die arcade format. Actually, i wonder if other arcade games in general did that. There's the Neo's memory card, of course. Game still works great in traditional 1CC format, too.

Re: Get your hands off my Johnson! (`w´メ)
This is honestly quite revolutionary and I'm surprised it did not become a trend for the time. Imagine if you could, for example, save your (local arcade) game of Cadash at an inn. Going a step beyond, having a full on profile saved on the game would be a killer move for repeated visits. Play the game 50 times, unlock cool benefits, something like that (though somewhat abusable, but that's a matter of corruption!)BIL wrote: ↑Sat Jun 01, 2024 10:40 amMoai-kun will record your name and PIN, with which you can resume play from your last stage reached. Maybe that's anachronistic? Applying modern customer retention tactics to old arcade games, hm.
The jokes are half the reason we're here. It's easy to preach correctness, but no one was ever offended (even Goomp, the myth, the legend, was taking the "let's not offend people" stance instead of the "i'm offended" one, which I take to mean he wasn't!).
Re: Dick Stock
Raycrisis arcade did that type of system. Enter your initials to access a personal profile. Continue playing to unlock new maps, secret ship etc over time. Pro tip: use initials like AAA or BBB to save the tedium of putting them in every credit.
Then there were ideas like MVS/AES memory card and Dreamcast/Naomi VMU that could enable progress or unlocks to transfer across arcade and home versions.

Re: Dick MEGASHOCK
I always wondering how the cool tracking with the camera following the Danny character on his Big Wheel trike pedaling through the spacious hallways of the Overlook Hotel was pulled off -- it was achieved by the cameraman using a Steadicam rig mounted to a wheelchair according to imdb.com. I'm surprised that director Kubrick couldn't get a time period correct "Big Wheel" trike (or even the cool futuristic green & black colored "Grasshopper" trike with it's innovative twin-stick controls to turn the rear end wheels while the front-mounted big wheel did not turn whatsoever) as those were all the rage/popular in the USA at that point in time back in the late 1970s and into the early 1980s Americana culture.
If the Jack Torrance character was shown in that July 4th, 1921 "Gold Room" Ball event black and white photo at the end of "The Shining", then that memorable event would've taken place 59 years earlier prior to what unfolds in the present-day 1980 timeline of the Overlook Hotel with the arrival of the Torrance family (not to mention it took a whopping 51 weeks of principle shooting to finish "TS" with director Kubrick).
In one scene, there's a pack of cigarettes place next to Jack's typewriter yet we never see the Jack character lighting up with one throughout the entire film (unless it was construed as subtle paid "product placement" in retrospect). The dry goods pantry room stocked with institution-sized canned goods from the likes of Libby's, S&W (in the USA, the S&W brand no longer exists today though as it was discontinued years ago), etc. are period correct -- we're even given a brief glimpse of the big-container sized Tang and Kool Aid as well.

Re: Dick Stock
I believe the first arcade game that implemented a password system was The Return of Ishtar, and Capcom's War Zard used something similar ten years later, though I've never checked how it works there, being a vs. fighter. Capcom likely thought of the feature first for Magic Sword, though, as it ended up getting a level selector which let you skip a good amount of stages (which basically works as a password system without the need of a password you could be taking from whatever source anyway).
Never thought this works well for arcade games, but I totally can understand it for something like Cue Brick or Gussun Oyoyo (the latter not getting it for its original arcade release but doing it for the home ports).
