Re: Top of the line Bang-Bang
Mentions in this thread of Robocop, I'd kicked off rewatching the Robocop films recently and agree with the sentiment that 2 holds up quite well - the gangster kid is fairly cringe and would rather have ditched him in favour of more Cain. Tom Noonan makes for an excellent sinister, scenery chewing villain - as per his showing in Last Action Hero.
After watching 2 I started the live action TV series, which I picked up on DVD years ago for about a fiver but never got round to watching. Saw a few episodes when I was younger, but at the mercy of ITV's regional variations (Robocop was on most regions, but ITV Anglia loved shoving Murder She Wrote on instead). It's honestly fairly enjoyable for what it is - though obviously loses something as a family TV show, so it shifts from ultra-violent to campy comic book "knock out the bad guys" style. It focuses a lot on Murphy's character and keeps the satire intact - there are excellently produced Hanna-Barbera styled "Commander Cash" pro-capitalism cartoons throughout, and the news broadcasts have plenty of daft snippets like "speaking English in France to be punishable by jail time". I'd 100% recommend watching it (or just look up the Commander Cash and Media Break segments) instead of Robocop 3.... jesus, that thing is all kinds of terrible. Hadn't seen that since it came out on VHS! It has Stephen Root in it I guess? He doesn't set the building on fire though, sadly.

Maligned as I am toward gang kid, I'll give credit to the hey junior check out this fucked up shit bit for efficacy; an effective swivel for Cain to go from from weirdo ideologist cult leader to full-bore psycho.
And hmm, Robocop live action show - that sounds worth a go. I've been peripherally aware of an animated series which looks straight out of the X-Men era, but have been delaying a watch since the kid-friendly angle could easily slide into RC3 territory.

do not confuse me with the others
Every time one of the many a franchise "Chris' " is mentioned, I have to visualize again, to tell them apart.
Ah, yes, known for his beard and muscles. Well, whatever works, huh.
I'm sure he gets a funny MM 'pocolypse name: Wheelkisser Jack, or similar.

Re: Movies you've just watched
Argh, the shuddering just mentioning movie -> tv stuff... TV was completely godawful back then. (No wonder it was a golden age of movies - there was no competition! Fraudulent advertising - they would never give us Friday the 13th or Nightmare on Elm Street on tv, those cowards!)
Even pilots that never get made into a real thing tend to blow that era's stuff out of the water. Like Amazon's Zombieland TV show. I enjoyed watching that one episode they have.
From Dusk Till Dawn TV show is very adequate, you should protect yourself from 90's tv shows (that aren't Matlock) and watch that instead!
When will they stop?
Harakiri (1962)
Another reliaBIL recommendation! Delivered on its loaded title in spectacular fashion, with generously-portioned mystery told in a familiar flashback style that I can't quite put a finger on.
Rashomon is the obvious-ish touchstone, but I'm sure I've seen something that took the 'last tale of a dead man' format and ran with it more literally.
Bloody good, and worth the epic 2+ hour sitting! Death walks very slowly and with purpose.
Probably ought to watch the film really, finally come to terms with Badman Clooney and Slimy Quint - another hole in the swiss cheese I call a movie acumen!
Dunno if I can bring myself to broadly slate the era that brought us Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, though a quick freewheel through IMDB's Best of 90s list is bringing as much pain and indifference as nostalgic guilty pleasure.

Part 1: Standing on ceremony
I thought Motome's story was really well presented, deftly weaving the viewer's opinion of him through desparate, deceptive, and finally uncanny in the lead-up to his blunt and bloody end. And there's that familiar sadomasochism - less the expected game of Shame Uncle, and more being tied to the rails with a very sturdy, polite, and socially-acceptable, chain! Blimey
The game of chess began early and subtly; a gratifying feeling of something being off despite little to no explicit hints to the contrary.
The game of chess began early and subtly; a gratifying feeling of something being off despite little to no explicit hints to the contrary.
Part2: The ancestors are not going to be pleased about this
Or maybe they are, if they're as vindictive a set of bastards as the current generation!
Extra pleased to find out that this is one of those films at its root; a matchlock-to-your-head battle of the minds between two individuals who could have any number of secrets up their roomy sleeves. Could it be yomi level 4 ninja maneuvering, or perhaps the greatest unfortunate coincidence of the Edo period? Will it zoom out yet again and reveal the grandson making that selfsame declaration of suicide in the halls of Iyi?
The real is of course, more even-handedly grim and human, Motome's paralysis of no choice revealed to be as much his own as it is the Daimyo's.
Hanshiro dropping the quiet nuke of the retainers shirking their topknotless honour was bitter black ownage; casts the earlier scene of requesting a second in a different and more confident light. Something was clearly up, and they were bald the whole time was a thoroughly well-played twist of expectations.
I would have been satisfied with the moral victory, and walked out happy after two hours of talking and a good duel. But he just had to go and maim half the retainers, despoil the sacred armor, and commit a most righteous unblinking combat-seppuku into the bargain QED, Iyi-dono!
Reads like a good thesis, with that final declaration that everything is in fact fine and familial honour is intact the ironic proof of facade. Pass with great honours!

Harakiri is amazing, definitely on my list of best b&w visuals. This spring I'm hosting a movie night double feature where I'll do Harakiri and Mizoguchi's Sansho The BailiffLander wrote: ↑Sat Dec 02, 2023 10:51 pm Harakiri (1962)

Re: Movies you've just watched
Oppenheimer -
It works as a biopic fi your doing a paper on the subject matter, but I found it largely uninteresting and largely political in nature. As an owner of the 4k Blu ray it did work out my subwoofer though to a degree I've never felt before. I mean I had to turn that shit down. Things that were not in the movie that I expected to see were the Hiroshima explosion, some of the test failures if there were any and more on the technical side. It is more about the mental overcoming of building a product which kills with mass destruction. Its a good movie if you want to see the shit that Oppenheimer went through. I found it interesting that they connected the UK in certain parts and Albert Einstein as well. Its also strange that at no point were there any protests about the bomb from any of the hierarchy. I mean, the outcome wasn't exactly a predetermined success in testing.
I'd give it 10/10 for being made and a technical achievement, but for me personally I'd knock it a few points for ommitting scenes which I feel added power. At no point did I feel conflicted as a viewer and I know for a fact I would have been conflicted had I been there.

This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

From what I saw, it was more Robocop 2 than 3. Goofy in the good ways, but not even attempting to be as brilliantly satirical.Lander wrote: ↑Sat Dec 02, 2023 10:15 am Maligned as I am toward gang kid, I'll give credit to the hey junior check out this fucked up shit bit for efficacy; an effective swivel for Cain to go from from weirdo ideologist cult leader to full-bore psycho.

I often mention that scene in Shin Godzilla when they mention the Americans are planning on dropping a nuke on the godzilla and making everything much, much worse. I felt so much joy in that moment at all the awesome crazy shit that could happen. Until I quickly realized the last thing the normie Japan audience would want to see is a nuke being dropped on a city. Then they ended the movie by driving a fire truck into Godzilla's knee, knocking him over, and then spraying some plastic cement into his mouth.
Yeah.
I've seen some documentaries of the bombings, in my day. Kids and/or their parents reduced to ash. People outside the instant death radius having their organs fast-microwaved by the gamma radiation. People in makeshift infirmaries begging for people to kill them. Just looking at inside-out chest man having to live with his ribcage basically reduced to brittle charcoal really gives you a sense this isn't the kind of thing you should do to other people.
America doesn't wanna see that. It's all about "human interest" pieces, now. You know how America Ninja Warrior spends 6 minutes on a guy talking about his shoe collection and 6 seconds on him falling into the water on the first obstacle? Yeah.
Always have to wonder what the world would have been like if the capitalists hadn't managed to get rid of Henry Wallace and insert Truman in there.
There are analogies being made today comparing AI to the bomb. There's people coping ever louder as we get ever closer, saying they don't think it can be done. But the end will likely be the same as it is always is: some of the most brilliant people in the world will create a wonder, a horror, and then the cabal of horny vampire monkeys will be the ones that control it.

I watched Robocop....all can be reduced to:

Just saw Godzilla Minus One.
Fascinating, as most Godzilla movies are, and very competently executed imo. Of course it still operates within the limits of big-budget (for Japan) entertainment.
The cliché is that the films are snapshots in time of Japanese Society while still being mainstream popcorn munchers, and that is the case here as well. The conceit as to why the US military is nowhere to be found is kind of silly but I think for Japanese movie producers and audiences the implicit understanding here is:
edit: forgot to mention the Battle Garegga vibes in this. If you know, you know/

On the other hand, there's some interesting references to other postwar literature surrounding the bomb such as Ibuse Masuji's Kuroi Ame (Black Rain) but some of this is left as a cliff hanger.'obviously we can't have a mainstream movie set in post-war Japan portraying US Military fighting in Tokyo. Godzilla is as Japanese as yamato-damashii so we Japanese need to be the ones fighting back. Who cares if it doesn't really make sense'.

If I'm not mistaken, this was originally brought here with great praise by Zen, who eventually went on to greater things when he flew a little to close to the ban hammer. I quickly fawned over it where it went on to others (likely BIL). Maybe my chronology is off, but I only bring that up to illustrate how awesome this thread can be sometimes.
EDIT: I was wrong. A quick search shows MM apparently brought this up at which point BIL got involved. I had gotten the rec from Zen. I still maintain my stance on the thread though.
Personally, I think Harakiri ranks highest in Japanese cinema for me. I've not seen tons (somewhat ironically), but from what I have, this has always been a cut above - even Samurai Rebellion. The cinemascope is so well utilized.

Rocco and His Brothers
Another flight across the pond, another long ass film viewing. Inspired by Lord British's write up, there's not a lot I can add, other than it's pretty full on for 1960. Quite a bit of the fighting is quite visceral, and the low points pretty low. I was completely unaware that the actress playing Nadia, Annie Girardot, was in fact French. Maybe that's why I got the Bridget Bardot vibes? Anyway, she's smokin' hot.

Besides being superb films, what a showcase for Nakadai. His Kagemusha doubleplay 1CC impressed me, on my first Kurosawa binge; but in hindsight, his versatility goes without saying.

Then I remember those years were spent having rough edges chiseled off on the hard-knock streets of viddo game discarse; better to have gotten (most of) the nob-end out of my system there before stepping into the hallowed halls.

"oh no...it can't really happen..."
and then...she did it! She watched it...and in that millisecond of distraction she was defeated, leaving Murphy alone to his fate.
They managed to compress in a 3sec scene:
1) Black men stereotypes.
2) Sexism.
3) A bit of Maschilism.
And that scene is the MAIN reason for Murphy's death...and it was the fault of a woman, and a criminal black man.
I don't know whether to cry or laught
I love the first 2, i want more...
by the way why does Robocop almost always shoot in this position?

I went on a Hal Hartley binge a couple months ago, and therefore I was introduced to the actor Robert John Burke. I thought, "Damn, this guy has a total Peter Weller look/vibe". So i googled him and found that he replaced Weller as Robocop in Robocop 3, so I did a little victory dance.

In all fairness yes, that was a noob move from Lewis; she should've seen MORE than enough dicks - of all the colours of the rainbow! - in Detroit PD's co-ed locker room, to not be so tempted!

I like how JOE COX (geddit?! ), he of the Tactical Distraction Dong, has the most anonymous sendoff of all, next to STEVE MINH. Like Steve, he gets unceremoniously shot in the chest and dies! But UNLIKE Steve, he was a loud-mouthed brash dude!

IIRC, Peter Weller has done some excellent commentaries on the art of being ROBOTCOP; I imagine he was either directed, or finessed his body language. Very convincing! Did you know the suit was actually very light, fragile, and easy to scuff? He totally sells the walking tank thing - as with countless great performances, that's true stagecraft! Meanwhile? Bobby: GONE FLYIN. Old Dude Talking To Emil: BOUGHT THAT FOR A DOLLAR. Mr. Palmer from Twin Peaks? BABOOOM! Emil? DON'T TOUCH ME MAAAN! Clarence? *KUROSAWARTERIAL SPRAY* They all had bigger, louder sendoffs - WITHOUT getting their dicks out!
Irony, innit!
That's his signature pose, his bullets do 2.5x damage to dicks ;3 Dicks can no longer distract him! He has Robot Cop Vision
(when he's driving around in ROBOTCOPMOBILE, he's actually in his drawers )
Shumps Farm 2005~2020 memorial was mostly good, sometimes dubious, but the most important thing to know of is our very own Lament Configuration, blackman.txt - otherwise this post's subject header might look a bit sus, as the kids sayLander wrote: ↑Thu Dec 07, 2023 4:20 pm It's with some frequency that I lament not joining the farm much earlier and experiencing its rich history firsthand
Then I remember those years were spent having rough edges chiseled off on the hard-knock streets of viddo game discarse; better to have gotten (most of) the nob-end out of my system there before stepping into the hallowed halls.
Oho, nice!Lord British wrote: ↑Thu Dec 07, 2023 5:39 pm I went on a Hal Hartley binge a couple months ago, and therefore I was introduced to the actor Robert John Burke. Well his suit looks like the most detailed thing of the entire movie, impressive quality. Even for modern standards. I also like "body acting", a thing that i see few times in modern movies. The acting is always forced...i don't know, looks like if in the past the main actors were just better, plus what they say sounds more natural than modern scripts (IMO).
I also like the fact that Peter Wellers has a Master of Arts degree in Roman and Renaissance Art , and occasionally taught courses in ancient history at the university, he also came here and was a guest on some programs.

Re: Movies you've just watched
Lewis getting done in for taking a peek was lame, she's introduced as a top officer and it's a rookie mistake that's out of character - but the pair are still outmatched and likely to lose against Boddicker's crew. The entire setup for Robocop is about putting prime candidates in risky positions, you have two top rated cops going into a highly dangerous situation without backup and yet they try to bring the perps in alive like the good cops they are (Murphy only wastes one in self-defence). Lewis is lucky OCP didn't end up with two options for the Robocop programme. However, Robocop is happening eventually - whether Lewis can't resist a schlong or not.
Of course if they were bad cops they'd just waste the gang at first chance, but their lack of morality means if they bought it eventually then their chances in the Robocop programme would go more like the pre-Cain Robocop 2 montage....

The Steve Vai of Shooting
Murf whipping out the Woo dualies on his very first patrol certainly set a bar for how understaffed Detroit P.D. was!
I did think it was weird that the film sets up that sequence with "no backup, we gotta make the call" just before they enter the warehouse, but never loops back around to question whether it was a rash decision. Some potentially good material there if they'd had Lewis grapple with what have i done in the face of her newly-robotic colleague, rather than the confused ...Murph? You in there Murph? *knock knock* that she ended up with.
Look at those pursed lips, like a virtuoso gurning as they rip a beautiful guitar solo deep within his neural matrix, Murphy's loving it!
It's a charming facet that's sadly missed in 2 and 3, which kept the ballet poses, but gave him a Judge Dredd stony face instead.
You could probably lampshade it as advanced recoil control or some other suitably cyborgy idea, but really I think it's just good old fashioned Rule of Cool.

I thought he did a decent job as Robocop given the size and stompiness of the boots he was expected to fill; certainly no Weller, but surprisingly solid.Lord British wrote: ↑Thu Dec 07, 2023 5:39 pm I went on a Hal Hartley binge a couple months ago, and therefore I was introduced to the actor Robert John Burke. I was going to try and make a case for the blackness and womanness being circumstantial, but totally forgot the peek despite the dude being (EEHEEHEEE!) highly memorable; remembered it as Lewis sneaking up to the scene of Murphy's death, and then hesitating due to being outmatchedLemnear wrote: ↑Thu Dec 07, 2023 5:25 pm Murpy's partner caught the black bad guy and everything was fine untill the black bad guy say something and i was like:
"oh no...it can't really happen..."
and then...she did it! She watched it...and in that millisecond of distraction she was defeated, leaving Murphy alone to his fate.
They managed to compress in a 3sec scene:
1) Black men stereotypes.
2) Sexism.
3) A bit of Maschilism.
And that scene is the MAIN reason for Murphy's death...and it was the fault of a woman, and a criminal black man.
I don't know whether to cry or laught

Robodoc covers the Roboposes. Peter Weller worked extensively with a movement choreographer for the role. He took the whole gig really seriously. A bit too seriously in fact. "Robo wants an Oreo".

Aha, bless. Knew I'd heard him speak on The Importance Of Being Robo
I like to think there's a whizzing score counter in the upper-left with an array of JUSTICE SHOT and RELOAD blurbs - most definitely a Raiden Fighters DESTROYED AT A TIME when he shot that rapist in his dick and both ballsLander wrote: ↑Thu Dec 07, 2023 8:21 pmLook at those pursed lips, like a virtuoso gurning as they rip a beautiful guitar solo deep within his neural matrix, Murphy's loving it!

It was! I'm in hot and heavy w/ an Italian who currently hails from your neck of the woods. Despite many other talents I won't go into here, she's got fantastic taste in the arts, all the way to film. She gave this quite a blessing to watch on my last trip over. A local cinema played La Dolce Vita the night before my flight, but I couldn't "squeeze in" a 3 hour epic at the cinema when I had to wake up at 4:30 to head to the airport.Lord British wrote: ↑Thu Dec 07, 2023 12:52 pm Alain Delon is French too, of course. Glad you saw it! Hope it was worth the time.
I need to check out Sword of Doom. You know it's serious shit when I can't make heads or tails out of the original title.BIL wrote: Yeah, all credit to MM for mine; he recommended Harakiri along with Sword of Doom and Samurai Rebellion as a Zankoku Jidaigeki triptych, I just pass the message along.
Looking back, you would think Samurai Rebellion would be considered Kobayashi's magnum opus, but I think it's Harakiri hands down, or perhaps The Human Condition depending on who you are. The latter of which is of course, absolutely fucking epic, but Jesus it's not an easy watch, due to length, volume, and also subject matter.Besides being superb films, what a showcase for Nakadai. His Kagemusha doubleplay 1CC impressed me, on my first Kurosawa binge; but in hindsight, his versatility goes without saying.
As the old adage goes, be careful what you wish for. We have had some serious ups and downs here. For the most part, I look back on it fondly. Life was different then - the majority of us actually played shmups / shooting games, although we probably bitched about which term was more accurate even more. However, there was mountains of drama. If you weren't involved, some of it was legendary. We still name drop some of those fallen anti-heroes from time to time, and it brings a tear of joy to my eye. *Most* of that is documented here. Sadly the Trading Station was sealed away in a time capsule, that only our AI overloads will get to read (and potentially choke on).

I agree w/Harakiri over Samurai Rebellion. I can see how SR might be a good starting point since Mifune is in it, but nah. Both are great though. Haven't set time aside to start The Human Condition yet, but that's on my short list.GaijinPunch wrote: ↑Fri Dec 08, 2023 3:03 pm

Checked out Netflix's newest movie called "Leave the World Behind" that made it's grand debut today, 12/08/2023, with Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke getting top billing. The chain of events that unfold throughout this particular film would seem to be very "likely/realistically possible" in these trying times (especially nowadays). Highly recommended as you'll never guess as to how it really concludes.
Be sure to look for the cool unmistakable logo & slogan on a supporting actor's t-shirt for bonus points/hidden meaning to whom you know from the recent past. Whom could that be?

Netflix Factoid: The Los Gatos, CA based Netflix streaming company spends a whopping $17 billion usd annually on creating original series and movies for general mass consumption. For some major Hollywood film studios, that's considered "chump change" these days. Gotta keep those movie studio shareholders happy, right? It's business as usual.
