I met him a few times in real life. Got along well. I even traditionally stuck up for him... even after he butting into threads at gamengai with little other reason than to take a low blow at EOJ. Doing so at the risk of being hated by all, you'd think he could take some constructive criticism of him being critical to other review writers with a pinch more maturity.

Which is probably why there was so much fuss about his ban. It is important to defend right wing extremists who speak against democracy, to cultivate one's sense of superiority (and keep the svastikas in the closet).

Yum, closet racism. Though I don't think that was the main issue, said individuals can actually not intend to be racist (they're probably just extremely ignorant) but not be bothered by intense and pervasive racist and other prejudiced statements.

Icycalm, on the other hand, spent his time here to tackle down the aforementioned sense of superiority (in a way that I find dubious, but whatever: he may be right, who knows...).

Icyclam never actually cared about racist statements and had his pedophile friends (with brandon "i like preteens" sheffield's silent approval) flood out a forum full of people whom seem to have wanted a laid-back general games community instead of a hentai game jerkfest. It's not good to simplify what he does to that sense.

Mods in both cases checked the ability to stick to rules about politeness etc. Bloodflowers seems to have a precise and decent sense on how to carry out the "totalitarian" task of ruling out the ones who can't behave, unlike the merry pranksters who donned their KKK cape and defended the little dumb kid with the submarine avatar.

There are people just as worthy for banning according to the rules, but they keep us around because we're funny sometimes[size=0], or because they agree with us[/size].

But ehi, everyone likes to feel cool by being unmutual.

Internet apathy, as well as other phenomena, is all part of a well-off populace's ability to rationalize terrible shit happening until it is too late. Like the fact that the current administration went into tons of underhanded shit to get what they wanted (a massive funneling of state money into defense contractors and other assorted corporate interests) and people were conditioned to think that it was business as usual (which may have always been the case, one example being the roman empire's slow death through the "bread and circuses" period.)

In general I think that people stress too much about reviews (read: being influential via opinion) and whatnot. Sure, I would like to have an army of paying dittoheads to praise me for my opinion on the latest Cave game, but in practice I simply write down what I think about a game.

It would be nice to cultivate a passive-aggressive attitude via reviews ("this game sucks and you will be a social pariah if you disagree! You hurt my feelings by not being a slave of mine!" etc.). I don't care much about videogames (I just tend to play them) and lobbying for this or that approach (e.g. Cave zomg, Psikyo pvp, etc.) strikes me as fluff, but to each its own, I guess. As human beings we can't avoid being tribal.

I see this kind of behaviour at "higher" levels (academia) and sometimes done in a poorer form. I ended up taking for granted that constructive criticism is usually fought by all means by most people, so this attitude strikes me as normal. However, as a personal experience, I think that "constructive criticism" does not really exist in most fields ("higher" ones let alone "lower" ones), at most one gets 1 page of bitching and 1 line of fuzzy suggestion about improvements.

The random exception is always welcome, of course, but at the end of the day it takes some good patience to find one coherent comment among most hate rants. If the criticized individual does not take stock, I'd say - maybe there's too much noise.

Or maybe he's some inbred white supremacist (ops, "Jew") douchebag. In that case, I blame his uncle daddy.

I like the times when shoe and twiddle derail a thread for like no reason other than because they can and just spam back and forth. which is why every game is portal edition and forever will be. that's like super GOOD TIMES there.
