Try running the updater with different compatibly modes. You could always set up a virtual machine running XP with VirtualBox.

Last time I had VirtualBox on my old computer it refused to recognize my USB ports. I tried the updater in all compatibility modes it's a no go there
There should be an option to configure how usb devices are handled - wether they connect to the VM by default or if it asks, etc. if that doesn’t work, try different VM software, they usually have a free trial. You could always install XP on a separate drive.
