For those who are curious on this thread, the Egret Mini blows the Astro City (regular and V) out of the water in every respect in the hardware department. The size is so much better, the controls are so much better, and they did a really neat thing with the screen where they added a lens that simulates a curved CRT that makes it look so good. The rotation mechanic also works super well. I'm hoping these become general purpose gaming machines at some point, but until then the difference is down to the hardware. The Egret slaughters the Sega machine in every respect sans the game list. I doubt I'll see much use out of either Astro City going forward, but the Egret makes me want to play it.

ARrrGgggGHhh!!

But...
They're charging $80 to ship to the US

Do the Astro City Mini pads work on it ? Just curious.
Astro City Mini pads and the Mayflash sticks both work on the Egret II mini (have to use the button on the mini cab for menus, though). F300 Elite has to be on Dinput setting at start up to work. Too bad it's not the other way around (Egret II stuff on Astro City Mini) too since the Egret II stick is pretty cool and supports 4/8 way without opening the stick up. Egret II Mini stick works great with PC and MiSTer, though.

Edit: For some odd reason, the F500 controller settings aren't consistent with the F300 settings. F500 Elite needs to be on console mode (the gamepad icon) to work. Not sure why it's different, but it does work.

So... Going back to the Astro Mini, has anyone had an issue with it crashing??

I just ran into a thing with Gunbird. I was playing as the old man, and while exiting the stage 1 boss dialog, the screen turned solidly gray and everything locked up including the power switch. I had to unplug and plug back in to reset. Upon it coming back on, I chose Gunbird again, selected the Old Man, and this time as soon as the game started, it again locked up with the same gray screen.

The third time, I chose Gunbird, played the old man, and burned through two credits without incident.

Could someone do me a favor when they get a chance and just play a couple credits of Gunbird with the old guy? I want to see if the issue is universally repeatable or just something wonking out with my unit. tia!

I received my Egret II Mini blue buttons edition, and indeed the Astro Mini pads work flawlessly on it ! :D

I agree with what was said above: from a hardware and comfort quality point of view, the Egret is the best Mini, it's a gem ! But nothing can beat the amazing games list offered by the Astro City V and it plays great too.
Both are fantastic and offer so much fun. If you have the cash, my advice is 'buy both of them!', you won't be disappointed :)

It would be nice if Taito released a base for the Egret Mini like SEGA did for the Astro Mini's, but alas I'm not sure the sales of the Egret II Mini lived up to the expectations ? Does anyone have any info about it ?

I moved the few posts about Egret II Mini to that device's own thread.

I played a few credits with the old guy. Tried just playing a game, using up a few extra credits, letting it go back to the title screen, and then started up another game. No crashes. Could just be some random thing you stumbled onto. Has it happened again since this post?

Has it happened again since this post?

I just got done playing a few credits with him and a few other characters, and everything seems a-okay.
Although, during all the unplugging and replugging because of the crashes, I did notice the usb power cable I'm using fits very snugly into the unit. Because of this, it's very easy to have it 'half in/half out'. And since the unit is so light and easy to move around while playing, my current hypothesis is that I may of been cutting the power just for a millisecond.

If it happens again while I'm certain the cable is fully inserted I'll go back to the drawing board. But for now, I'll just run with that hypothesis.

Thank you for giving it a gander.

Savestated my way through V-V just to get a better feel for the game overall. The difficulty takes quite a jump at stage 3, which is a peculiar stage on its own because the first half feels like an easy bonus stage. Despite the game having a minor case of Gradius syndrome, it's not that bad since it's quite generous with the power-ups. Having Shot usable as both focused fire and spreadshot is really fun, though I'm not sure if focused Shot has better DPS than focused Missile. I did the whole thing with Shot, but I can see some spots where Missile's different behavior might make things easier.

In the superplays I've seen, you need missiles for scoring. You can get a lot of points off of the bonus-spewing invincible zakos in stage... 3? Especially on the 2nd loop, where they spit out 10k panels.

It seemed like lining up all the missile pods was pretty good DPS, but I don't have enough experience with the game myself to compare it to the fully-focused Shot.

For any UK people interested, I've just seen the Astro Mini V up on Amazon UK for pre-order for February 2023, for £229. I'm not sure of its original price-point when it released in Japan, but that seems like a spicy meatball

Including postage and handling fees, it comes out a shade under £150 on Amazon Jp.

8bitdo works, so you can use the M30. With a Mayflash adapter you can use more too.

Ghegs wrote: Mon Aug 01, 2022 12:37 pm Got mine this morning, a day earlier than expected. Nice.

I'm gonna have to say that I wish I could mute the SEEEGAAA and "Astro City Mini...V!" announcements when booting up the system. They would be fine IF they came out of the proper output, ie. external when I have the HDMI cable plugged in, but they don't, they come out of the system's own speakers always. That's annoying as hell. I'm probably never going to use the system itself to play the games, it'll always be with HDMI out and a separate controller.

And speaking of which, I was surprised to discover that the Egret II Mini's control pad does not work with this. I assumed that it would, since the Astro City Mini's control pad works with the Egret II Mini just fine, the one extra button on the Egret II Mini notwithstanding. I'm gonna to have to consider buying another Astro City Mini pad just so I don't have to switch my one controller from the hori system to the tate system.

The menu system is dumb and the worst I've seen in a mini system yet. Listing the games only by their release year was a poor choice even in the first Astro City Mini, but with that you could see the names of ~12 games all at once, in plain English in a clear font, so it's easy to find the game you want. With Mini V you only see 5 games at a time, and they're often very stylized logos, so it's much more cumbersome, compounded by the fact that the system doesn't remember the last game you played (neither does the first Mini, to be fair). And there's no sorting options at all, again like with the first Mini.

The Egret II Mini could sort by title and release year, and had the possibility of marking games as favorites. The console Minis (checked SNES, Megadrive, and PCE Minis while writing this) each remember the last game played and have many sorting options, from title, to release year, to number of players, time spent, etc. The user experience of the Mini V certainly leaves something to be desired, even at the menu stage.

But finally, about the games. This is actually the first time I have access to a lot of these. I was very pleasantly surprised by V-V, that was more of a my kind of shmup. Dogyuun felt interesting too, though I have no idea what was going on. Out Zone I had a familiarity with, I had the PCB for a while, and it was one of the main reasons I purchased this device. Desert Breaker was one I was looking forward to trying out, but my initial impressions aren't very favorable (but climbing into the mech-thing and doing the THRUST ATTACK looks utterly hilarious). Why was my gameplay constantly interrupted by what looked like tutorial message boxes? Shame this one doesn't have an English version available, some of the games do.

All those games played just fine in my opinion. I even did some reaction-dodging in Same! so the lag can't too horrible there either. Based on the list of response times Rastan78 posted earlier, I tried to find the cut-off point where the games started to feel bad for me. For convenience, here's that list sorted by the response time:
Spoiler
R=Title&ms
R=Moon Cresta&83.7
R=Terra Cresta&116.7
R=Raiden&116.7
R=Zaxxon&120.8
R=Cosmo Police Gallivan&121.2
R=Desert Breaker&121.3
R=Tatsujin&129.2
R=Out Zone&129.6
R=Batsugun&133.3
R=Wrestle War&133.7
R=Dogyuun&137.9
R=V-V&137.9
R=Same! Same! Same!&141.7
R=Shippu Mahou Daisakusen&142.1
R=Tatsujin Ou&146.3
R=Sonic Wings&150.4
R=Samurai Aces&150.4
R=Strikers 1945&150.8
R=Action Fighter&158.7
R=Battle Bakraid&158.8
R=Gunbird&162.9
R=Armed Police Batrider&167.1
I think for me the cut-off point is either Shippu Mahou or Tatsujn Ou, in those I can feel the lag if I really pay attention to it, but the games still feel playable. Bakraid and Batrider definitely felt iffy to me, though I thought Gunbird felt about the same as Sonic Wings or Strikers 1945, so I wouldn't treat those numbers as gospel.

To me Bakraid and Batrider were never the main attraction of the system, though I understand they were to many, but I'm content with the device. It's definitely not perfect, but I can't call it a dumpster fire either.

I thought the egret controller did work on astro mini v? I just bloody ordered one!

Speaking of Mayflash, F300 and 500 also work on the minis. The GP2040 arcade board has specific settings for Astro City Mini, NeoGeo Mini, Genesis Mini, and Egret II Mini.

No. You can’t fix bad emulation with a controller.

For those interested, just play youtube videos (where you see the actual joystick being moved together with what's happening on screen) at 25% speed. you will be frightened.

I fought the good fight with the V and got 1CCs on Outzone, Batrider and Bakraid, but when I returned recently I found I had completely lost the muscle memory to deal with the lag. I think I just WANTED it to work so badly I was able to play through it, but I find it impossible to enjoy now.

I cleared the first loops of Outzone, Shippuu and Tatsujin, and I made it to the last boss of V-V. This was quite a while ago, I'm going to have another go with it at some point.
