Street Fighter Alpha Anthology

Post by LoneSage »

Some good stuff, my love for Alpha 2 is rekindled. Best in the series and one of Capcom's greatest fighters, hands down.
I don't get why CapcomUSA took out the moves list, there's not even one in the manual.

Even though A2 trounces it, I'm playing some A3 just to get a better grasp of the -isms (particularly V). The game itself just feels generic, the music and backgrounds feel like they could apply to anyone.

A1, still worthless.

I've been in a SF mood the past month, I'm actually not half-bad at the games now. Maybe.

How do these games look on the PS2? PS1 versions looked bad, and the DC version of Alpha 3 was also flawed. Perhaps these are the perfect versions? (wish I had the perfect ps2 joystick.)

IIRC, the reviews on Gamespot and IGN said they were perfect arcade ports.

alpha 2 and 3 are really good in this game, you can change everything in the display menus from contrast to sharpness, filter on/off, etc. i forgot everything that alpha 2 was all bout until now, but i still love alpha 3's diff ism modes.

Come on. Notice any new guides that were just released? The difficulty just seems sad now when I can crush Final Vega my first time through. Still suck at competitive A3 though...

And to boast for a moment, looks like I called the collection spot on. Everything is similar to Vampire Darkstalkers Collection, no World Tour mode, and the additional characters in arrange versions of the games. Logic reasoning wins yet again.

Yes, they are all arcade perfect. I have the Japanese version of the game.

The console versions of Zero 2(Dash) and 3(Upper)can be unlocked, plus a new version called Hyper SF Zero too. This is a pretty damn good collection.

I just posted this on another forum:

I picked up Alpha Anthology today and after having a few matches with my mates we all noticed something interesting... the sprites/backgrounds in the Saturn version of Alpha 2 are bigger and more detailed then the ones in the PS2 (arcade perfect) version. Also the Saturn port has much crisper sound.

Both the Saturn + PS2 are running through S-video cables. Check out da pics:

To which I replied:

You're referring to 2D arcade-to-PS2 ports/emulations, in which case the PS2 version actually uses fake low-res (check up on it for more info) that does indeed make the games look awfully blurry esp. with higher quality connections. Every developer pretty much uses it (Capcom, SNK, Midway, Taito, etc., NOT Sega's latest offerings and Arika though) to save time and energy, at the cost of making the games look blurrier than it was. It's for this reason that the 32-bit versions of all of these games look better than the PS2 incarnations, and spanman's pictures show the difference. The size of the sprites is simply due to the odd CPS2 resolution of 384x224 rather than the normal 320x240.

The SS version of SFA2 cuts off the sides (don't remember if this was an option; I know SFZ3 offers this as the graphics size option) whereas the PS2 version tries to squeeze in the whole picture, thus making the sprites seem contorted and thin. Add to this the PS2 versions's fake low res blurriness to make the details muddier and you can easily see for yourself why the visuals don't look nearly as good as they did in the arcade. Unfortunately, as long as the majority don't really care, the developers can't be bothered to provide real low res (as Sega has now done with its latest JP Sega Ages games such as Gunstar Heroes Treasure Box).

Thank you gentleman...this answers my questions.

Seems like I'll be sticking with my SS versions.

With all the fake low res issues aside, I'm still getting it because supposedly its arcade perfect. Gameplay is king, no matter what.

It would probably matter more If I had an rgb monitor, but It already looks shitty enough through composite.

Many of the Saturn Capcom fighters offered Saturn and Arcade screen settings. I guess the Saturn rez option squishes the image slightly to 354x224 (the Saturn's actual default rez) while the Arcade rez option leaves everything at full size but chops 15 pixels off either side of the image..?

Not at all, I heard that's due to it coming straight from the arcade's ROMs or something. This is some good stuff, ports be damned.

PS2 has more than enough memory to fit the graphics data, and the chip audio is probably in ram as well. If anything comes off the disc its probably the remix audio.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

I have to chime in and say that I am really enjoying the collection. I always did like the Alpha/Zero series of games the best.
LoneSage wrote: A1, still worthless.
??? I always thought it was a great game. They keep on toning down Akuma/Gouki, and on A1, he was godly. And it had IMO the best sound effects for Akuma's grunts.

I will still keep my older versions for the arranged soundtrack (A1) and world tour (A3). I do wish the Street Fighter Collection on PS1 didn't have that stupid "Akuma Mode" that got rid of survival mode...

Regarding Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix- loving the animation, difficulty is stomping me on normal :?

Yeah, that's why people don't like A1. It was unbalanced (esp. Guy) and had stupid chains that nobody wanted.
