Sharp X68000 XVI blue disk error message wont boot to OS

Post by Hoagtech »

I dusted off my XVI after a long pause and went to fire it up and got this error screen of Kanji and a hand holding a disk.

Their is a flashing green light above slot 1 disk drive.

Does anyone know what this error means and what may have caused this?

Can't read disk. Please reset and change disk... If this always happens with different disks than Drive 1 needs maintenance.

Also this message should be white. If its blue tinted than something is not right, but could be monitor or computer issue.

Thanks so much.

There are no disks in the drive..

I temporality got it to work to by turning off the switch on the back. resetting it or using the front power didn't work.

It came back again after few resets but I sent it away with the back switch.

Hopefully another XVI can chime in. I don't mind it now but am not too keen on reaching behind the system.

Bonus question. There are 2 Field Ground terminals on the back of the X68000. If I have my ac plugged into a step down converter ungrounded. How might I go about grounding the system itself to FG? Would I plug a Cord into the wall and connect the ground to both or one of the FG terminals?

Flashing green light above drive means system is waiting for you insert a disk.

Failure of soft power off can have many reasons. SRAM reset may fix the issue, but can also be early signs of hardware problems. My own XVI was running perfectly 2 weeks ago, but now it's lost video output. Now waiting for new inverter chips to arrive to fix it lol.

For grounding, just attach wire to the screw terminals and then connect to a ground. (Japan only uses 2 prong ac outlets and has wall screw jacks for ground cables).

Sweet. When I connect the FG terminals to a ground. Do I use the green ground wire from my power cord plugged into my wall socket. What a typical ground setup look like?

I tried clearing SRAM but am still seeing the issue when using the front power on and off.

In USA, the lower middle prong on 3 prong outlet is ground. Just get a standard 3 prong plug and connect the the ground wires to it.

There are lots of things that can cause failure of soft power off. If you have any modern upgrades (scsi sd, usb, etc), remove them all and try again. If soft power fails, check psu. If psu is good, then you got pcb issues.

Love my XVI, but these things are Ferarris. Work beautiful one day, then random failure the next.

Just to confirm there are 2 FG terminals on the back of the XVI.

Do I tie these before the socket?

Can you confirm this *rough diagram I painted with my mouse?
