umi wrote:I play on hardest difficulty too. Yes, it's just more fun :P As an added bonus, it takes away the boredom/slowness of the early levels too. Mainly, I hate playing any game knowing it's holding back on me (guess I'm a sucker for punishment).
You mean to tell me that in the first few levels, you are collecting all the bees and are consistantly chaining to end of each level (without bombing or dying)? If not, then you are not really playing this game to its full potential, nor understand the difficulty involved. Which is then understandable why you need to change the default settings to make it at least a bit more challanging if all you are doing is playing for survival.

BTW: if you want to see the first few levels unrestrained, try playing the second loop. I think you will sh!t your pants. :D

I'm with you Umi. Very Hard is the ultimate challenge the developers have in mind for their game. I like to take on the best the creators want to throw at me.

On a separate note, it seems things have evolved into a legit discussion. Good for us!

There's a whole lot of "I play on HARD, I'm a REAL MAN" going around, but no actual proof that these so-called 'real men' are indeed any good at the game in question. So bless us all with your magical skills and show us a 1CC replay on Very Hard difficulty.

Or if the early stages are indeed extremely easy to you on default, then you should have some kind of forum-beating score on default settings. So post it already.

Most of the players here know that the real challenge in shmups lies with total mastery of the game and its systems. If all you are doing in playing DDP is trying to stay alive for as long as possible without thinking about maxmising your scoring potential, then I would say that you are most certainly not experiencing the true challenge of the game, and as a result, I'm not surprised you have to jack up the difficulty to compensate.

I'm all for 'each to their own' and all that. But don't expect to write something like "What, you guys don't play on very hard AND you cry a lot?" without drawing the wrath of most of the forum.

You clearly don't get it Icarus! Quit being a baby and turn the difficulty all the way up, rapid fire off and set lives to 1. PS analog stick only, black and white 5" monitor, 200 feet from the screen using binoculars.

I don't understand how using 73 credits on a game like Battle Garegga set on hardest is more of an achievement than getting to the fifth stage on one credit of the same game on Japanese defaults to these people
so long and tanks for all the spacefish
unban shw
<Megalixir> now that i know garegga is faggot central i can disregard it entirely
<Megalixir> i'm stuck in a hobby with gays

Trackball? Wuss!

I was playing DOJ earlier today, struggling to reach level 4 as always. Then, I realised! I just wasn't being Man Enough about it. I realised that playing on defaults for survival is only one step from wearing a dress and worrying about chipping my nails playing Puzzle Bobble. Not good enough, I would be taunted by children, and women would laugh at my weak skills from afar.

So, I got an old leaf spring joystick from a ZX Spectrum, glued it to my knee, and used one of those head mounted prodding sticks people with no arms need to type. Then I jacked the difficulty up to max and am now hardcore. For 20 seconds at a time, including loading.

Of course, in response to this whole sorry topic (and yes I'm quite aware of which comments were tongue in cheek):

This "you're not playing properly if you don't chain", "loop 2 is where the game really starts", and "I'm so wonderful that only very difficult challenges me *bragbrag*" mentality is just a stones throw from the 11 year olds on Halo 2 screaming "I'M SO GONNA OWN U!!!!!!11". Save the ego for something that matters outside of a few thousand people in Japan and on the internet, and cut everyone some slack if they just want to play at their own level. I've been within the top 5 in the world at a game before now (and we're talking tens of thousands of players in the rankings here), I never used to strut around bragging about it to the other players, and I never used to try to make people feel bad about not being world class. It's not big, and it's not clever.

Gotta balance out the ill effects of those brightly-colored bullets somehow. ;)

I'm really not trying to brag, as I've never once said I totally own any game. I never boasted about any skills or about being better than anyone. I just said I like to crank the difficulty to max. I believe it creates a more enjoyable experience overall.

Agreed... only one person in this thread on our side has come close to bragging (whereas all the defaulters are getting mighty defensive about the whole issue). Like everything, it's just personal preference.

I think what really matters is that you PLAY ddp :P Cuz, you know... it's damn good.

I hope it was an Interface 2 stick. If it was Kempston compatible, you're just a big pansy-boy. 8)

Personally i play on very hard and as a consequence, all the ladies appreciate my performances. I mean, how can you play on "default"? It's technically impossible...
