Oh my frickin god...CYVERN

Post by tehkao »

Anyone else agree this is one of the most unknown, underrated, underappreciated, kick-ass shmups of all time???

Frankly I would have never known this unbelievable game existed if I didn't read about it here.

IIRC, the only other shmup Kaneko made was Aero Blasters, which happened to be one of the best horis for 2P co-op play in its era. Kaneko should have made more shmups...

They also made Super Star Soldier, didn't they? Another classic shmup.

Man Kaneko must be one of the most underrated shmup developers of all time.

Super Star Soldier was Hudson

And yeah - Cyvern absolutely rocks, I'm meaning to get my hands on another one sometime.

Check the menu screen in SSS, Kaneko's logo is clearly visible, so they had at least something to do with it.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Cyvern's got a lot of good things going for it, though I wish the bullets were a bit more visible...in any case, yeah, I do wish it got a console release or something like that, so more people would know about it. For some reason I always mentally compare it to the Vasara games...not 100 percent sure why.

tehkao, i hate you. this is THE game i have been wanting to play for almost two years. and monitarily i am very far away from getting my cab/super gun + Kaneko Super Nova + Cyvern. so screw you for "saving" money, you're just playing Cyvern to mock me! Aren't you?

....
congratulations, i am way jealous (evidenced by how much time i wasted on the above paragraph  )[/i]

Any shmup with dragons as selectable characters gets extra points in my book.

At least back in the PCE days, Hudson just liscenced/distributed the Star Soldier series, Kaneko devved them and don't forget Star Parodia. One of the best comical shooters of all time even though it's painfully easy.

Oh yeah, I just ... uh ... what's the general consensus on emulating here? Because, if it's cool with y'all, then I just started playing it a couple a days ago and it doth rock hard.

If emulating is hated here ... then ... uh ... I was fortunate enough to find it in an arcade nearby ... run by this old guy selling Mogwais ... he cackled at me every time I put a quarter in. Said something about buying my soul bit by bit and not to eat after midnight.

Yeah.

Emulation is like mastusrbation. If you can't get the real thing, it's the next best thing.

I played it on MAME.

I don't think anyone here is expecting everyone to own the original PCB of a shmup to have the right to talk about it. That would be fricking retarded.

Cyvern seems pretty cool..been meaning to pick it up,myself. As far as Air Buster goes,I think it's one of the better 16-bit shmups out there. Underrated,it was,indeed...:(

I agree. Air Buster seldom gets the credit it deserves, and It predicts many things that were later to come (Border Down, anyone?)
Altough the "loading" times on the Mega Drive version can drive a man nuts.....

i am sure i could emuate it. but i refuse to emulate any games that i know i want/will love. (ex: ESPrade, Cyvern, Guwange, UFO Dangar, , and many more!)

NOTE: I will compromise my Guwange experience with a replay though (can't download the one from Leeram's FTP). Any offers? :D

Cyvern

Post by DEL »

Mode 7 seems to have disappeared recently - He hosted the Cyvern Hi-Sc Thread & held the 10,000,000 record.

It is indeed an excellent game, as is the other Kaneko Super Nova System favourite - Sengeki Striker.

You really cant compare the incredible CYVERN with this dumbass game Sengeki Striker.
:D

Remember the soundeffect of the mainweapon ?
I think this must be the badest sample i have ever heard in a shmup.

Actually I'll speak in defense of Sengeki too - it's a very playable game, the weapon pods are interesting, it's smooth, stuff explodes - what's not to like?

Still surprised they didn't just call it Shienryu 2, that's obviously what it is...

Heh....if you want to rail on Sengeki Striker's sound effects, that might prove troublesome as you approach the bosses and hear THEIR main guns...

It's pretty intimidating to hear them going off before they've even appeared on screen, to say nothing of the 3rd stage flying battleship which has its giant engines blasting simultaneously.

Hi !

Ok i make it short and simple:

I have mentioned the soundeffects before. They are really annoying.

Graphic is substandard especially compared to a title like CYVERN produced on the same hardware platform.

Gameplay is boring. There is nothing i havent seen in another shooter.

Bossfights:Nahhh...the same procedure as every year, James.
:D

Why wasting time with such a bloody game ? There are hundreds of better games out there.

Sengeki Striker or Cyvern ?
Its like chosing between heaven or hell !

Cheerio

Dinner for One

Post by DEL »

RFK - Apologies for playing Devils Advocate there!

Cyvern Vs Sengeki Striker is a matter of personal preference. I'm not putting Cyvern down, as you might have seen from the old Cyvern score rankings  .

We're gonna have to agree to disagree on this one. I simply enjoy playing Sengeki Striker :D

Ps. "Same procedure as every year, James" - Got it - Dinner for one every Christmas in Germany, I believe.

Since Mode 7 got that incredible score, did he put up a Superplay video of it anywhere? I've never seen an "all clear" type replay of Cyvern, but would like to.
