Sounds like a winner so far.BIL wrote:Gonna write a bit about Berberian in the movie thread - it's a divisive sort of film, very unhurried and open-ended, but anyone who enjoys Lynchian mundane surrealism, and has love for Foley work and general 1970s analogue film-making should dig it. At ~90mins it's relatively compact, I recommend it if you're in the mood for something offbeat.

Peter Strickland's The Duke of Burgundy also comes highly recommended. It's also decidedly more sexy.GaijinPunch wrote:Sounds like a winner so far.BIL wrote:Gonna write a bit about Berberian in the movie thread - it's a divisive sort of film, very unhurried and open-ended, but anyone who enjoys Lynchian mundane surrealism, and has love for Foley work and general 1970s analogue film-making should dig it. Since I've viewed some high-res versions of this poster, there's a feature I've been obsessed with: The guy hanging down from the front of the shovel got impaled. There may be some variants on this, but none are too graphic - just suggestive.

The exploding ship + biplane certainly adds to the association!

Damn, first I'd heard.drauch wrote:You ever read the trivia for Hard Times? Supposedly Hill didn't like working with Ireland, whom of course Bronson requested. He went to Bronson's house after filming to try and work with him again. Bronson at the door refused to shake his hand! Real damn shame. Another lost classic out there in the ether of productions that never happened, like that Verhoeven and Arnold crusades movie. If I could have anything it would probably be that.
This reminds me, I saw an incredible poster at a flea market, it was in a collection of a large stack of pulp horror advertisements.

Awesome poster! Although I would be hesitant to put up posters of films about Nazi soldiers on my wall.

The film conveyed very well what it may feel like getting an assignment that represents an almost certain death sentence. The soundtrack conveys this feeling as well.
But these are individuals that know nothing else than living under water, are under control of the government, so they do what they are destined to do. Very bleak indeed.
