How do you play your shooters on the PS2?

Post by infested_ysy »

When playing shooters on the PS2, do you:

- like vibration?

- use only the D-pad, analog pad, or use a combination of both?

I love the vibration (it's the best thing ever made for a console controller), and I find myself using the analog pad for anything other than DoDonPachi:DOJ. I use a combination of both when playing it (for some reason, I'm doomed to die quickly in the first two stages if I solely rely on one of the pads o_O)

I use my HRAP. 8)

If not then it's 50/50 analogue VS. directional pad. I prefer without vibration also, since it's generally useless I feel.

I use the Hori Tekken 5 joystick, always. I don't care for cross-keys or analog pads on shmups.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

I prefer the dual shock controller, but I manipulate it with my genitals. I find that they're so much more sensitive than my fingers.

It isn't as awkward as you might think, but then, I've a prehensile unit. It can generate nearly one hundred kg/m of torque, but that's neither here nor there.

...and I always use vibration. Always.

EDIT: In mixed company, I use my hands. People can be so litigious!

Do you smile slyly when people come around and ask if they can play a game or two, as you hand them your controller?

I don't use vibration even though it was fun when I tried it with Psyvariar. :P
But shmups and vibration just doesn't belong together. Analog stick? IT SUCKS! Right now D-pad is absolutely the best, becouse I don't have arcade stick, yet.

I use the Dual Shock 2. I think the Dpad on it is really good for playing shooters on. It's just not any good for every other type of game out there. :D

I wish I could just get motivated enough to build a custom arcade stick.

I use either my GGXX:Reload stick or my PS2-Saturn pad when playing shmups on the PS2.... with my hands.

Although I have been practicing joystick wiggling with my feet... so I think I could play through XII Stag that way. ;)

Hori Tekken 5 mostly, but I'm still better with a pad than a stick.

I don't think I'll ever get totally comfortable with arcade sticks after years of pad usage, but the hori makes for a more satisfying experience.

With the hands.

Still laughing from that one

I use my Ryu style hori pad for all PS2 shmuppy stuff....plus I really like the DC pad for the Dc games (always the pad though, never the analog). I find that the analog does not work very well for me...somehow feels like there is a lag or something

I need to get a good arcade stick and start using it.....for some reason I do not really like the DC stick (the nice one with green buttons--mental lapse prevents me from remembering the name at the moment), and this is why I have not gotten a better stick.

Does anyone have impressions/review of that Street Fighter Aniiversary stick that works on both Xbox and PS2 put out by Hori (with the cool pic of all the SF characters on it)? I was eyeing it but I wanted to make sure it does not suck (it's like $60 or so)...

A Namco stick that needs new parts. Like most things that receive too much love, it wore out 8) .

Funny thing is I mostly played shooters with my stick (double entendre intended) right from the start, and now that's all I can use. I'm rubbish with pads, even the SEGA one. Any other genre of game seems OK though. And not just any stick either, I will forever be partial to NEO GEO sticks, the original design. My (almost) exclusive NG stint in the early to mid 90s marked me for life. I don't want to pay shipping on those NG PS2 sticks, but I sniffed out the hardware section and Seimitsu should provide a similar experience? Maybe retrofit some stick with that, yarr.

I'm disgusted at everyones need to specify how they interface with their sticks. Only the guilty are that quick to justify themselves! You will be delighted to know that you can just strap next gen controllers to your rocket and wave it about, they have motion sensors. Not that I've ever thought about it, mind you.

PS2 Saturn Pad or Hori Fighting Stick, depending on my mood.

Neither of these have the vibration feature, but I doubt I'd use it even if they had it.

Saturn Pad for Psikyo

Namco Arcade Stick for Raiden stuff

PS2 dual shock for nothing... well, I do use it when I need several shoulder buttons like in Amplitude.

Custom built stick. I hate off-the-shelf cheapy plastic stuff. It's awful.

For those with no woodworking skills, or no place to do woodwork, I recommend Byrdo:

His sticks are second to none.

A Sega Saturn controller which works with my PS2, and yoko. Sometimes I will play TATE but, well... it could be just me, but most of the time I think yoko makes me play better.

HRAP sounds really nice, but I have hypersensitive fingers and find controllers are better. (Not that arcade sticks are bad, but you need to choose your crowd and stick with it, you know? No pun intended, heh.)

Namco stick for PS2/PSX. Regular Dreamcast and Saturn pads for their respective consoles, because I don't have decent sticks for either ;) I have the official DC stick but I think it's crap.
