Another trivia!!!

Post by neko_kun »

There this game I've played in the early to mid 80's, and it was pretty
ground-breaking at the time. However, it seems that there is no sign of
it anymore. I'll describe it, and if anyone remembers it, and knows the
name, please do let me know. As you can already tell, it's been bugging
me for decades...

I remember the name being 'Cobra Command', or something close to that. It's probably known as a number of different names. Yes, I know there is a game by that name, where it is a horizontal shoot 'em up with a Huey Cobra helicopter. The game I'm talking about is like this:

It's a first-person flight simulation. The game includes high quality
animation sequences in the intro and ending. It is a huge simulator
console just Afterburner. There is a flightstick. You fly in one of the
Cobra helicopters. You are essentially the gunner. You use the stick to
aim and fire at designated targets. The game follows a detailed
multi-stage story. It is linear. On occasion, you are required to
'pilot', usually in situations of evasive manoeuvres. It look of it is
basically of a high quality cartoon (for the time).

If anyone remembers it, please do share your thoughts :) Thanks!

The arcade game of Cobra Command is a Laserdisc one...

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

The arcade game of Cobra Command from Data East was distributed in the USA in 1984 and was priced at 50 cents per credit. Two players could play but it was set up alternating player style. The animation production of Data East's Cobra Command was amazing for it's time. Actually, it's a Laserdisc arcade game (similair to Cinematronics Dragon's Lair 1 & 2 or Space Ace). Two different arcade cabinet versions of Data East's Laserdisc game of Cobra Command exsists: in upright cabinet cofiguration & deluxe sit-down cockpit cabinet setups.
If you are able to attend the once-a-year California Extreme show held at the San Jose Convention Center's "Parkside Hall" room, they always have a dedicated classic arcade Laserdisc games section including the Data East's Cobra Command Laserdisc arcade game and the rare Funai produced "Interstellar" shmup Laserdisc arcade game as well. Here's the link to get the 411 on the upcoming 10th annual 2006 California Extreme show to be held on July 8-9th, 2006 -- http://www.caextreme.org

Of course, one can play this Laserdisc version of Data East's Cobra Command for the Japanese PSX under the title of "Thunder Storm FX" (besides the previously mentioned version of the same name for the Sega Saturn import).

I didn't say Sega Saturn.

I said Sega CD :)

I've never played the arcade version, but I've seen screenshots of it, and it seemed to be the exactly same game that's available on Sega CD.

Considering how simple is the genre, this game was very fun to play sometimes.
