How would you translate shoryuken? 所竜拳？

Could you substitute "dragon" with something else?

Can 拳 also mean "way" or "style"? Like monkey fist or shaolin long fist?

It's usually translated as "Dragon Punch" or "Jumping Dragon Punch". I figure the "ryu" is dragon. That's all I know.

Are you sure it's written like that? 所 "sho" means "place" among other things (excuse my noobiness if I'm wrong.) The other two characters seem correct, though. 竜 "ryuu" means "dragon" and 拳 "ken" means "fist. "

BTW, Dragon Punch is what most people regard as correct, including me.

I can say for a fact that 所 is not correct. I don´t have my jp. dictionary at hand, but the correct Kanji means something like "wave" or "energy".

IIRC it's the 'rising' sho, as in 'rising dragon punch'.

You are correct, sir.

昇龍拳 = Rising Dragon Punch

Sheng Long is just the Mandarin reading of the first 2 kanji.

You're thinking of 波動拳 (Hadouken): Wave Motion Punch.

Formally speaking, would it be 昇な竜の拳 shortened because Ryu is busy fighting and doesn't give a damn about grammar at the time?

Or can you make a compound noun like that, without articles?

New kanji compound words are created all the time... it's supposed to be one of the benefits to kanji, too.

TA-KO-SU is weird! Japanese doesn't really have plural is part of the problem, so you'd really only say 俺はタコが好き [if you wanted to sound really manly about it] or maybe タコが大好き if you really LOVE tacos.

Secondary problem is that "tako" can be interpreted as "octopus," "kite," or "callus," depending on context/kanji

I've always seen things that have to do with tacos referred to as タコス, even if there's only one. That's probably the reason why.

Nope, it is indeed a real word, but they've just made it synonmous w/ ESPGaluda.

たこ = Octopus
タコス = Taco(s), mexican food. Even if you're being asked if you want one, it's always タコス
