I just bought a PSP...

Post by captain ahar »

and it was weird, i opened it and fiddled with it a bit in the store, and i couldn't help but think about my unadulterated glee when i played my DS for the first time. on the whole, this time my glee was much more controlled and less... gleeful.

that is until i got home and could give dj max a spin (get it? :P). then that shit was worth it in spades. i've also got Sengoku Cannon, Star Soldier, and Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror to fiddle with. very cool little gadget.

for now, emulation and home brew are out (SP:DM required 2.6 so i upgraded, and Gradius Collection, which i can hopefully pick up next week, needs 2.5 or something). so i'll only be playing real softs, it would seem.
-------
aside: DS still doesn't win out over getting my white saturn though... nothing video game related will ever top that.
I have no sig whatsoever.

On PSP with firmware 2.60, can run PSP emu & homebrew...

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

If you have a PSP with firmware 2.60 and below, one can run PSP emulation and homebrew programs by the use of Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories memory stick exploit hack.

Of course, the original PSPs with firmware versions 1.00 and 1.50 are the ones to have and the most desirable. From the USA launch date of the USA Bios PSP to April of 2005, one could buy a PSP with firmware 1.50 installed from the factory. Eventually, SCEA got wise and later released new factory boxed PSPs with firmware 1.51 and 1.52 to stop the PSP emu & hacks...by then, it was too late for Sony.

Here are some cool PSP upgrades to check out!

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

On my PSP, I've got a 3rd-party Pelican PSP Screen Guard to protect the PSP's LCD screen surface...it scratches very easily.

Over at CompUSA, they sell the HTF "Logitech PlayGear Visor" for the PSP -- an external PSP Screen Guard that is quite functional and doesn't make your pristine PSP LCD screen dull & lifeless with 3rd-party PSP screen guards. Get it for a cheap-ass price MSRP of $9.99 USD.

At my local Toys-R-Us, you can buy the higher stamina Sony Official PSP Battery Pack, the PSP-280 Battery Pack rated at 3.6v with 2200 mAh capacity...this cool battery pack will set you back at $39.99 USD if you want one though.

Toys-R-Us also sells the external Official Sony PSP Battery Charger, the PSP-191, that can charge a 2nd PSP battery pack while you play with your PSP on the go. It'll set one back at $29.99 USD.

The stock Sony PSP battery pack, PSP-110, is only rated at 3.6v at 1800 mAh...is fine but a higher capacity PSP battery pack is the way to go if you want to enjoy PSP emulation & homebrew (at the expense of overclocking your PSP's CPU with shorter PSP battery life).

At my local Target store, I bought one of those cool "Logitech PlayGear Armor" for my PSP, it doubles as a movie stand in addition to sun visor and an external armored carrying case for your PSP. It sells for a cheap $19.99.

All the above listed PSP accessories will indeed further protect and/or enhance your PSP experience over just a standard PSP handheld. You paid good $$$ for PSP, then take care of it with some upgrades.

DJMAX Portable > emulation

I didn't know that you didn't have a PSP until now :)

Of course, for myself I was quite gleeful when I put the first pr0n on the Memory Stick. And then UMD pr0n.

Don't forget about Mega Man Maverick Hunter X, Mega Man Powered up, and Ultimate Ghost and Goblins (coming to the PSP later this year.)

Nice purchase, Capt. I really like the Namco Museum collection, as it includes a really nice new version of Galaga, and the shooters all allow for a vertical orientation. If you like pinball, I'm pretty happy with the Gottlieb collection, which also allows for a vertical orientation. Of course, Lumines is pretty popular as well.

I'd be curious to hear what you think of Star Soldier.

Ult. Ghosts and Goblins should completely rule-- I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes the killer app for us arcade types.

I haven't yet tried the Mega Man titles. Which is best to get?

I'm getting worried about Ultimate Ghosts n Goblins. I've had Goku makaimura on pre-order for a few months now, but we don't even have a release date for it yet.

I played and beat MM:MHX three times. It was an awesome ride even though I played the original X to death. It's mostly the same as X but there's enough new stuff to keep it interesting: new bosses attacks, new Sigma fortress, and Vile Mode. Well worth the $30 bucks.

As for MMPU, I haven't played it yet. I'm waiting for someone to lend me their PSP. Though, the word is that it is a very good remake and you can play as the bosses, Roll, and Protoman.

I only got a sealed copy of Sengoku Cannon, and yet to buy a PSP. :o

The only other game I want on PSP is Gradius Generation, but since I got Gradius I to V and Gaiden on other systems, the game would only be useful to me if I own a PSP.

I still don't found the reasons to acquire a PSP:

Pos:
Two games interested me. (Sengoku Cannon & Gradius Generation)

Con:
16:9 Screen (Not sutible for Acrade gaming, using 4:3 letter box actually cut down resolution on a LCD screen)
Short Bettary Life (need to be recharge often)
Awaken directional pad layout (It is much worse than the Cross Pad Nintendo use, the anolog control could never replay and D-pad in response time and accatecy)
Expensive (It is to precivous a hardware to be carried around all days.)
*Meow* I am as serious as a cat could possible be. *Meow*

Bah yer juss jellus' :)

SAM you mean Gradius Portable? (Generation is the GBA game)

I got Star Soldier and Sengoku Cannon when they were released, and I found myself playing Star Soldier much more. Sengoku Cannon wasn't all that hot.

I don't find battery life to be a problem at all. But then again I usually don't play for more than an hour when I don't have a power outlet nearby. And then I just recharge it whenever I get home.

battery power hasn't been a problem for me so far, i've mainly been playing it on the bus, with some brief sessions at school for flavor.

sengoku cannon - i think it is ok, but honestly, its a shame that Psikyo's name is pasted all over it. suck it x-nauts.

star soldier - better than decent, but not excellent. its more complicated than i was expecting. and honestly, i still don't understand it completely (gold pyramids, anyone?). but its been pretty fun during the few chances i've had to play it.

dj max - still the fav. but the game seriously crushes my soul with the difficulty, and also derives some sexual pleasure while doing it. i can't even pass the first track on easy without missing a beat. my problem lies in reading the columns and sending the appropriate response to my fingers... it's just not happening.

syphon filter - i'm very impressed with this one. mechanically its a bit limited but that seems more to do with sony's hardware (the controls) than the actual game. sony bend's control system is as good as we can expect i think. the actual action is well thought out and enjoyable. story is meh so far, but since i started with shmups story has become a negative in general ().

graphics are great, it is insane playing a game that looks like this on a handheld system. i still recall wowing my class-mates with the NGPC. :D only problem with this department, is the refresh on the PSP seems way to slow to handle games like this. its almost like the game has a motion blur filter, you get used to it, but still... :?

-----
and zweihander, thank's for that contribution. i think we all learned, and grew as people... :B

I have both Maverick Hunter X and Powered Up, both are worth owning. But I would recommend Powered Up over X. Powered Up's level editor alone makes it worth the purchase.

And the sheer amount of additional elements, extra characters and challenge levels you can unlock or download is boggling. You can even play as Protoman and Roll. It depends of course how much you like MM X. As an X fan I'd say it's worth it for the overall presentation but Powered Up completely owns MHX in replay value.

Also, according to someone on the Next Level, you can currently get MHX or Powered Up for 19.99 at Best Buy. So if that works out, I'd buy both.

edit: Make sure you print out the ad below before you enter the store:

If you think you even kinda like puzzle games, get Lumines. I'm sure you've heard enough people praise it. It's a lot of fun and very polished.

I'm not sure why, but I couldn't get into it. I'm something of a Tetris nut so I thought it'd click with me, but no. Maybe it's the fact that the music isn't to my taste.

Or simply because I've never gotten into another puzzle game. "Well, it's kinda fun....but it's not Tetris."

I have Katamari, all 3 Legend of Heroes games, Powered Up, Virtua Tennis and WipeOut.

WipeOut's the only one that I'd call great.

My US PSP is on eBay. Once I've sold that, I'll order a Japanese PSP.

And then I will watch 6 hours of Region 2 UMD porn.

Congrats on the purchase! I have a ceramic white one, and play it just as much as I do my DS. It's a great system, especially for games that cater to the system's strengths, like DJMP, Wipeout Pure, etc. I was a hater for a long time, but I gave up the fight, let the enemy overwhelm me, and well, I'm very happy that I did. :)

Easy is giving me trouble too. I haven't played this sort of platformer for a while, so I forgot how incredibly frustrated I get when I have to repeat certain jumps over and over. Drives me completely mad!!! I think I'll have to stick to Kirby, Contra, Metal Slug, etc, for my platforming pleasures.

Capcom Collection, on the other hand, completely rules. Varth is gorgeous. The only problem I'm having is that I'm so used to a Saturn dpad right now that the PSP controls feel sluggish and haphazard. I feel like I have no real control over ship movement. :? :(

Yikes, I can't imagine how it is, having to wiggle the PSP D-pad to get more bombs in Varth... That must be the single most stick-wiggly game on the planet, even more than XII Stag and Psyvariar...

Bwarharhar... I have also just ordered myself a Japanese white PSP. Not too bad.. basically traded my US Value Pack for a Japanese Standard pack. I still have a hard case and a 512 MB Memory Stick anyway, and I never touched any of the other stuff in the Value Pack.

Nice, iatneH. I believe the Japanese CW PSPs have better D-Pads than North American PSPs. NA PSPs have sunken D-Pads so MP3 playback isn't interrupted while the owner has the PSP in his or her pocket. Way to prioritize, SCEA.

yep, still playing... still can't beat easy...

i can get to the round with that really shitty "bruce lee" song, and then i die quickly.

also, of note. i've sworn off anything below 1.5 speed. the beats are just too close together for me to react properly. still love, but god this shit is way harder than any rythm game i've attempted before...

i've also become quite attached to capcom collection the past few days. varth and chariot are where it's at. ^_^

Whoa captain, I didn't see your last post until now. I just use the default setting - Up and Triangle for blue notes. You'd better leave it like this too, otherwise you'll be twice as confused when you make the transition to 6Button, and again when you graduate to 8B.

Anyway, my beautiful white PSP was delivered today. I love yesasia. No customs duties or any other trouble. When I ordered my GP2X from play-asia, it cost me like $60 in duties...

I'm still waiting for the battery to charge up, but I'm itching to dive into DJMAX Portable again.

i bear sad news.

i had a nice little fall on my bike the other day (read: bad and violent fall). i came out unscathed (short of some really good looking scrapes and bruises), but my psp was less fortunate. the screen was shattered. in the next couple weeks i'll be submitting it to the sony trade-in program to the tune of $90.

no DJmax this summer...

DJMAX for the computer is better, anyway. The buttons on the PSP make it sound kinda awkward.
