What is your preferred screen size for shmupping?

Post by ghibli99 »

Couldn't find this topic, so if it's been discussed to death, mods, please feel free to lock.

Anyway, last weekend, I was at my friend's house. He has a 67" Samsung DLP TV, and I decided to try out both Gradius V and DDPDOJ on it. For some reason, I had the hardest time playing on the big display. I felt like my eyes couldn't see everything I needed to see in my peripheral, and because I had to sit 8-10 feet away from the TV, I felt like precision movement down to the pixel level was nearly impossible.

At home, I play on my Sony 40" XBR (yoko), and even on that, there are times where my eyes have a hard time keeping track of where everything is in relation to my ship. It seems like the smaller the TV gets (I've found the sweet spot to be in the 23-27" range, like arcade cabs), and the closer I sit, the better I am at getting through shmups.

How about you guys? I know that a lot of people here play on arcade-spec only, but for those who don't, what do you like? A bigger screen or a smaller one? Thanks for your feedback. I think it'd be cool to find out what works best for people here. It could help me decide on a good overall shmupping setup as well. :)

I don't go to the arcade often and I don't have a cabinet at home, but I think 20" suits me the best, for the close range at which I sit.

At 20" I can do coarse bullet dodging with my ship in the peripheral vision while I focus my attention on other places.

Unfortunately at home I'm just using a little 13". With the smaller screen, I often try to focus on the entire playing field and I just get visually overwhelmed.

When using a bigger monitor, the periphery thing doesn't work as well anymore since it's just too big and most of the screen is basically invisible to me.

I usually go for around 23" and sit two and half to three and a half feet away and if it's a vert shmup i almost always flip my monitor over.

Well, I prefer to play on a 13" monitor which is small enough that I have a holistic scope of my surroundings. 20" montiors would be my limit. I sometimes feel dizzy playing on a big screen TVs because I'm constantly moving eyes from corner to corner.

I have a 24" Toshiba TV for horis and yoko verts, and then a 23" tated TV for tate verts. Seems to work well for me, though I may get rid of the 23" and go for a slightly smaller tate monitor like a 20", with better picture quality.

I haven't had the chance to play on a screen that's too big. 21" is nice, sometimes I cope with about 8" (don't ask).

21" to 29" for me. Any smaller than 21" and I can't make out the details, any larger than 29" and I lose information out of my peripheral vision.

I have a 25" monitor in my cab, I think it's too big. Even though big looks awesome. It's hard to keep track of everything.
For tv's It just matters how far away you are sitting 8)

EDIT: 25" for me is too big in TATE!, for YOKO it's fine. I am always in a TATE state of mind, sorry :?
And I am big (just lengthwise..........ok, I gaining weight as well, if you relaly have to know) so it's not like my nose is touching the screen.

But the coolness of a big screen will make you forget that you suck more on a big screen.

29" or so for Yoko, 19"-21" for Tate, although I'll make due with larger screen sizes. With the small screens, my face is usually REALLY close to my ship/character o_x

I think 29" RGB Monitor in Tate is the closiest thing to acrade experiance. And that is the screen size in the developers' mind when then design the game. :o

I have a 36 cm Sony TV, quite old, no flat screen, but very nice picture, I use it for tate only.

I do also have a 70 cm TV (Thomson ?). I have tated only once, and it was awesome, games immediately felt more playable than on the small TV or 70 cm yoko.

I was wrong thinking 70 cm tate would be too big. Bad luck I can't tate it myself, I need help from someone else.

For modern games, yes. Oldschool stuff was probably designed for around the 19", and really oldschool stuff 14".

I'm getting into the habit of tate-ing my 24" Philips TV when shmupping tho it seems too 'long' for me having been used to playing yoko for several months. To compensate I use 4:3 mode to crop a couple of inches top and bottom. I find I 'lose' too much of the action otherwise.

When my cab arrived with its 29" monitor in yoko it felt too wide. I couldn't take in everything that was going on without moving my head. Onced tated, this was not an issue, despite the overall screen area being the same. Must be something to do with it being tilted back.

When playing horizontal games (in MAME) with this monitor still in tate the screen area used is roughly equivalent to viewing on a 19". This setup suits me fine :)

^^^ Wow.

I tend to move around a lot, so I use various screen types/sizes depending on the circumstances.

I've been playing games on a 12inch laptop screen for the last month, but I recently bought a 29 inch Samsung TV. I got it for 300 euros (prices are so low these days it's not worth buying anything less than 29 inches--for example, a 21 inch Toshiba or Philips goes for around 240 euros). It's still in the box and I will be taking it out today. I've been debating whether to tate it or not ever since I got it. I think I am going to go for it. Wish me luck.

I'd heard so much about how good Ibara-- and Cave games more generally-- look, but they've always looked so crap on my 20" in tate. I decided to try out my 13" which has RGB and it made a world of difference. Looks incredible-- one of the best looking shmups I've ever seen, at least with respect to explosions.

I thought that moving down to 13" from 20" was going to affect badly my Srikers 1945 play, but no. I'm playing as well as ever, i.e. not well at all. (Unfortunately I've been stupidly busy over the past two weeks and haven't played shmups at all during that time).
