So what games are messed up?
The information is somewhat available, but it seems very scattered and sometimes hard to find. What ports of shmups (and other games, but shmups seem to be unusually prone to this)
-- are vertical but don't have TATE mode?
-- have filtering (that can't be disabled)?
-- are interlaced when the original was not?
-- are scaled up to something not a multiple of the original resolution?
Obviously I'm hoping people would post as many as they could think of in the thread, but if you know of a preexisting list, that'd be helpful too.

That would be a huge list as it would include all 8 and 16-bit ports of vert games that were altered for Yoko format.arromdee wrote: -- are vertical but don't have TATE mode?
Recently though, Giga Wing Generations and the Capcom Classics Collection are two that spring to mind.

Chaos Field
Giga Wing
Zero Gunner 2
Possibly Mars Matrix too, but i's been ages since I played that one so I am not sure.

In all of those cases, the original arcade game was oriented in the same manner (vertical scrolling game on horizontal monitor) so the port isn't broken.Super Laydock wrote:Some Dreamcast victims of this are:arromdee wrote: -- are vertical but don't have TATE mode?

Things like the Playstation release of Shienryu, or the PS2 Gigawing Generations are what belong in that category.
Really, though, there are so few "perfect" ports, so I'm waiting to see the level of nitpicking that could wind up in this thread.

Capcom's ports of Gigawing and Mars Matrix are somewhat well-known for this.arromdee wrote:-- are scaled up to something not a multiple of the original resolution?
Fortunately you have the option of resizing the resolution on Mars Matrix to match the CPS-2.

Yeah, but if it's only integer scaling, you don't have to interpolate missing pixels to fill the screen, meaning you won't get weird scroll effects and funky looking sprites.I'm pretty sure this doesn't matter. It'll still be scaled.

We here shall not rest until we have made a drawing-room of your shaft, and if you do not all finally go down to your doom in patent-leather shoes, then you shall not go at all.

Who cares if the game is "scaled-up" or whatever you call it? Is the game fun? If the game has the most beautiful graphics ever & its gameplay still sucks, then the game sucks.
The only reason to be concerned w/ these kinds of figures is if the port is Japanese & it costs more than a standard US game. In other words, if you're paying $80+ for a port of an arcade shmup for PS2 & you don't want to spend that kind of money unless the graphics are clean. That I could see. Or if you didn't want to spend that kind of money w/ no TATE option. That's valid. This issue of "scaled-up" graphics is just ridiculous otherwise. I mean, sure, the company making the port should make every effort to translate the graphics as cleanly to the platform it's porting to, but to nitpick about the scale and/or slight pixelation is overkill. I mean, if it's scaled-up so bad that the graphics are really blocky & you can't see what's going on, that would be a problem. Otherwise, I think it's not as much of a concern.

It's a very good question. Why not know how the conversion compairs to the original.
If you complain the res is wrong you get slated as a moaner but if there's no TATE mode everyone is climbing the walls in rage. It's an absolute joke.

On the flip side, why go out of your way to fuck the game up? Two sides to every story.FRO wrote:Who cares if the game is "scaled-up" or whatever you call it? Is the game fun? If the game has the most beautiful graphics ever & its gameplay still sucks, then the game sucks.

Truxton II / Tatsujin-oh (FM Towns):
* No Tate
* Can't see the top of the play area (some enemies will fire on you before they come into your view, though you can also destroy them at that time)
* Extra slowdown not present in the arcade game
* Missing parallax
Darius Gaiden (Saturn):
* A few missing colors on larger sprites, resulting in a little dithering.

Point well taken. I guess gameoverDude's post shows one example of that w/ Truxton II. But that's the kind of thing that I'm talking about, certainly not just being nitpicky about the graphics.GaijinPunch wrote:On the flip side, why go out of your way to fuck the game up? For me, lack of tate is an issue because even on a 30" screen, a tate game in yoko is the equivalent of a 15" or 13" screen. Worse yet, these modes often suffer from inferior graphics or other problems (screen cut off, etc.)
Generally speaking, if a port today doesn't bother with tate, you can bet there will be other problems.

Obviously it matters to some people, otherwise this thread, and others like it, wouldn't exist.Neon wrote:I'm pretty sure none of it matters, unless a better port is available.

Never having played or seen any of th arcade originals, I wasn't aware of that.
Good to know the lack of TATE options aren't because of lazyness or something.
