Dynamite Deka remake
Dynamite Deka remake
The reputation of Sega AGES begins to look good, alongside with that Panzer Dragoon remake:

Since this is basically DD with a fresh face of paint, it goes without saying that this could be the best 3D b'eu ever.
'Course, I do miss a lot of the colorful colors...this one looks a bit drabber.

It looks really good, considering how crude was the first game originally.
Having spent nearly $70 for Dynamite Deka 2 jap for DC, just to play more tranquillizer gun than the real game, I think I'll pass this one. It still burns after 6 years ;)

Alas, Ikaruga is going...
Undesired, unwanted them...
What makes them go?

I used to play Die Hard Arcade at the skating rink all the time. After I bought the Saturn import version last year, it was gravy.
Crazy how Sega has made the only worthwhile 3D beat 'em ups; Dynamite Cop (DD2) and Zombie Revenge are both top-notch in my book. Classic arcade fun, not sure how well they translated to the DC, though.

Personally, I don't feel the game is pointless at all. Also, the sillyness of the game is the best part IMO. It's part of the game's charm. Some areas repeat and the game is short, but the fighting is well designed and I feel that the game is quite fun. The game translated extremely well to the DC. I think the arcade one was on Naomi hardware. I feel that it's one of the more underrated games on DC. I also heard that Zombie Revenge translated quite well, but I couldn't get in to it when playing it at arcades.Fenrir wrote:Well, a wonderful conversion if that's what you want to know. Smooth, 60 fps and playable. But totally pointless, a bit boring and full of clichés. Unless you like those kinds of games, of course.
Coming out later this month.circuitface wrote:...and a Panzer Dragoon remake is in the works?
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

I heard pretty good things based on a very short demo. I believe it was the last TGS, but not sure. Plays a lot like the original, but w/ very well done models.Ganelon wrote:Well, it's hard to mess things up here. After all, the gameplay was pretty simple in the first place (in a good way). I'm bracing myself for the Panzer Dragoon remake to be a disappointment though.
Sega is apparently listening to fans now for the later Sega Ages titles, as the first 20 or so sucked balls for the most part.

Panzer Dragoon PS2
Look's good, but could be better (especially now after seeing the Deka remake, wow). I hope they've tidied it up a bit more.

Haha, I hadn't played the DC sequel (Dynamite Cop) for over 3 years at least. However last night I found it once again in the rack, had a great time with it. And now this news.
If the price is right (aren't the Sega Ages series available at budget prices???) I might pick this up.

Oh my goodness, PSX style graphics! Seriously, though, the only title in the SEGA Ages Collection for PS2 that is majorly broken is Golden Axe. Some like Outrun or Space Harrier aren't enhanced much, but still have the gameplay intact. Fantasy Zone is very well done. I found Alien Syndrome to be very well done, though the graphic style is quite different from the original. Bonanza Bros and Tant-R aren't changed much from the originals at all.GaijinPunch wrote: Sega is apparently listening to fans now for the later Sega Ages titles, as the first 20 or so sucked balls for the most part.

Alien Syndrome actually stays true to the original level design and gameplay. It does feel a bit different and more action packed, but I find that to be a good thing, not a bad one. I also like the Smash TV style control scheme.GaijinPunch wrote:To each his own. I thought Alien Syndrome was the worst out of the lot.
You seriously like Alien Syndrome worse than Golden Axe? The Golden Axe remake extended a couple levels, making them long and drawn out. Level ends aren't clear and some levels end in very odd places. You can't attack in the air constantly like the arcade. For some odd reason, you have to press the attack button at the start of the jump to attack. Characters have been rebalanced for the worse. Tyris is now a powerhouse and poor Gilius Thunderhead has very little range.
I'm glad SEGA is doing the PS2 SEGA Ages now, though. It seems like the more recent ones have the classics to go with the newer versions, stay true to the originals, or are just the classics.

Forgot to mention that I didn't play Golden Axe.
I've played:
Fantasy Zone (not bad, but I'm not that big on the original)
Phantasy Star I & II (meh, but glad I played them)
Alien Syndrome (the screen is way too dark -- that's my main bitch)
Gain Ground (probably my favorite of the bunch)
Space Harrier (hated the ground, but it was fun)
Probably will the Gunstar Treasure Box, and I have Panzer Dragoon on order.

This one drove me nuts. Even with multiple camera angles the characters and enemies blended in too well together. I liked the music and the illustration style but it was pretty lackluster in every other way.
Did they change anything in Phantasy Star 2 aside from graphics and sound? This game was supposed to be released in the US but company localizing it has faced some problems lately and I might just import it and play from memory. *-neo

I didn't mind it much, but it could've been better if your character didn't move so damn slow. On the arcade version I can clear the stages with a decent amount of time left, but the timer becomes a real problem on the PS2 one. The strafing is a good thing for the remake IMO.GaijinPunch wrote:To each his own. I thought Alien Syndrome was the worst out of the lot.
Golden Axe got the shaft. The control is deplorable to the point that it took only 2 plays for me to give up on it for good. It's about on par with Soul Fighter. We would've been better off with a straight-up conversion of GA: The Revenge of Death Adder instead of a total fuckup of the first game.
Kinect? KIN NOT.
with that said, I am discusted that Sega has NEVER brought home direct ports (meaning carbon-copy, arcade-exact) of many of it's 16-bit arcade games
Thunder Blade
Super Monaco GP
Shinobi
Alex Kidd The Lost Stars
Altered Beast (Genesis ver was a BIG disappointment)
Aurail (overhead tank shooter)
Bay Route (Sega's take on Rolling Thunder)
Golden Axe
Alien Syndrome (oh wait there *was* the arcade-quality X68000 version)
E-Swat
Heavy Weight Champ
Riot City (better than the first Streets of Rage IMO)
Super League
Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair ( PCE CD, MD conversions don't cut it)
Wrestle War
Crack Down
Gain Ground
Scramble Spirits
Shadow Dancer
(Genesis ver was not just downgraded, it was a different game altogether!)
Laser Ghost
Alien Storm
Michael Jackson's Moonwalker Arcade
Clutch Hitter
D.D. Crew

Re: Dynamite Deka remake
Bumping this, since I finally got to play it for a while.
I remember Die Hard Arcade cab standing in one of the arcades I used to play Metal Slug in, but it didn't look very compelling even then. This remake looks every bit as cheesy, not just because of the style, but also fairly dated animations. While the cheesyness is quite charming in this case, I have a beef with the gameplay, which seems to be ripped straight out of beat 'em ups with 8-directional movement where you can face only left or right hand side of the screen. Why go polygonal then? Because it's cheaper? I've never felt comfortable with such control scheme (Panzer Bandit style suits me better; haven't played Guardian Heroes, though), and I dare say a number of last gen TPPs proved than analogue stick and 360 degree movement are where it's at in 3D. Some of them even have co-op (The Red Star, Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks). It's a crying shame this remake doesn't seem to have at least one mode sporting more flexible controls. Responsiveness could be also improved (it performs smoothly alright, but the combat feels clunky for wrong reasons).
Don't get me wrong, I can't be really angry with it. Easter eggs hidden in various modes are reason enough to play it. For instance, if you choose Easy Mode, Golden Axe references will make for some Cho Aniki style action as a reward for swallowing your pride.
That being said, I can't work out why Sega fans hold this particular game in such high esteem. Are they the same fans who kept mourning for Dreamcast while Sega was developing Shinobi for the PS2 and F-Zero GX/AX for the GameCube/Triforce? I mean, Dynamite Deka seems to be made by people who missed the point of making games in 3D to begin with. Hardly something to be proud of, albeit I can't say I didn't enjoy it. It's almost as if the amusement park stage in Max Payne 2 was a parody of this game.
