The shameful part is the director was in the first one. You would hope he learned something from McTiernan.

The modern day Hollywood producer system destroys everything though. These days I don't even believe that much is in the director's hands and therefore they can't really shoulder all the blame.

The only ones I can really criticise are those with high profiles who get rave reviews - Like Nolan - who make tons of elementary errors.

Annihilation is a good recent example. Alex Garland should and could have done better.

Gray Lady Down (1978) - David Greene
Meh . .
Submarine disaster fim. Big cast. Tv matinee standard.
Also; was David Carradine ever not a creepy gimp? I mean, Jesus!

Ghostboat (2006) - Stuart Orme
Watchable.
Supernatural, Submarine, tv film.
How can one not like David Jason.

Also; I missed this one :lol: ;

February (2015) A pair of teenaged girls, a senior and underclassman, are forced to stay the weekend at their creepy Catholic boarding school. Oh hell naw! That's not a pair of wet panties flying across your screen, it's the tagline from overseas release The Blackcoat's Daughter.

Pitch-black horror dirge, blurring elements of the possession and slasher subgenres. Punctuates its thrumming malevolence and strange visions not with cheesecake or head-twists, but bouts of mechanistic butchery. An indulgently unhurried film, with perhaps a few too many wordless silences and lingering shots of bathroom tile. With an equally languid narrative, unspooling down to a bleak, blunt denouement, it will inevitably field accusations of Wasting Your Motherfucking Time. I would advocate giving it a chance on a patient night - I dug the ambience and particularly enjoyed the ending's implications.

Actual spoiler + mild powerlevel:
Spoiler
A demonic possession film and yet not? Surpassing "all in her head" cliche, I think it was all very real to our stricken lass - DEVILMAN, his banishing, her horrible, doomed attempt to reunite and subsequent wail of abandonment - a psychotic viewpoint depicted with an intensity I found affecting in retrospect. I'm a recovering nutter myself, you see. >_> I really liked the seamless juncture of possession and slasher archetypes.

Also, that cathartic shriek of "HAIL SATAN!" Image Yooo, \m/etal as fuck Image Video nasty boyeee! Image

Matango (1963)
Some time for another movie, and quite a great one. Great atmosphere and suspense. Effects are nice, although they look goofy nowadays. Characters weren't bad at all. Worth watching indeed. :)

Predator might not be total dog shit if they put Badger in it.

You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

I'd say I'm aghast, but at this point I'd expect nothing less. :/ Got no more outraged loads to bust for our criminally mismanaged 80s icons. Predator, Aliens, Terminator, Robocop, all regularly deluging the bed in torrents of corn-ridden shit. Time to pull the plug, close the lid, put both barrels through the back of the head, etc etc.

I suggest checking out KLON's Famicom Predator. Pardon the silly "Big Mode," it's an artfully mean little Treachery Platformer with some absolutely cracking quasi-Engrish (ta kitten!). The NES one might suffice but had some dumb things done to its level order.

The Thing + Bonus material

I have had the latest The Thing rescan on BluRay for a while, and didn't get around to watching it until recently. As I needed something on but couldn't pay 100% attention to, I ran through some of the bonus material. Pretty cool hearing the casts stories all these years later. The interview with Carpenter was charming as well. I did watch bits & pieces of the TV broadcast versions. Jesus Christ Almighty what a turd.

For clarification you are talking about the one from 2011 right?

Anyway I haven't seen much lately but I do have some nice movies coming on LD. Will post about when watched.

Mac and Doc's visit to the Swedish camp packs more lasting horror than the entirety of 2011 in a minuscule fraction of the time.

A handful of 2011's most extreme body horror is memorable, but it lacks the surrounding movie. I suggest Alan Dean Foster's 82 novelisation instead, which packs some interesting (and generally worthwhile) differences including a bone-chilling nod to the Swedens' fate.

Norwegians, I mean.

Part of the bonus materials included an interview with him. Always found it weird to read a book which was based on a movie... unless you were too young (and not ballsy enough) to sneak into the movie.

While I was waiting for some LD movies I bought to arrive, I dragged out a CRT last night (since I have to anyway) and watched a couple movies I already have (not on LD).

Appaloosa

Might finish it later, might not.

Snore/10

Six Days, Seven Nights

Predictable romcom w/ Harrison Ford and Anne Heche. It's not really worth going into the particulars here. The kind of movie you can have on in the background.

99 Homes (2014) - Ramin Bahrani

A boom, bust, scam buddy film.
Michael Shannon is engaging (as usual)

No where near on the same level as say, crime bromance Deep Cover (1992) - Bill Duke
with the mighty Laurence Fishburne and mercurial Jeff Goldblum, but very watchable nonetheless.

Game Night

Comedy with a strange premise (husband and wife, the protagonists, are the core of a group of friends who meet to play simple board games; this night his brother intrudes on the group) and an unusual plot in which reality and games get quite confused; mostly funny, with some excellent high points (e.g. the doctor's conversation in the beginning), a lot of good scenes, some filler and several almost unavoidable Hollywood stupid moments (from the subplot about marriage problems to the use and abuse of game-related skills in real life).

It tries to give the impression that anything can happen (for example, with the ridiculously creepy neighbour) but it overpromises. Worth watching for the plentiful really good scenes and for the mostly successful attempt to do something novel and smarter than the average comedy.

The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938 w/ Errol Flynn)

Love the pacing in this. Particularly noticeable when ran against the bloated corpse that is Crowe's Robin Hood or Prince of Thieves. Solid acting performances all around and a really nice musical score. I love that this is basically just a romantic, no bullshit version of Robin Hood.

Best Robin Hood/10

Saw Infinity War.
Bit all over the place. Had some pretty good bits. I liked seeing Thor and Rocket together a bunch, that was a character combo I didn't expect to work so well. Most of the rest were a bit naff.
Loads of people show up and don't matter one bit, the movie tries to cram way too much into one sitting. Some things that should be shorter are too long, some things that should have been longer are too short.
The tone's a bit weird, particularly with the Guardians of the Galaxy characters interacting with the rest of the MCU. Sometimes, the movie actually lets a serious moment ride. Sometimes, it completely fucks it up.
Kinda really wish Star Lord wasn't so fucking retarded here -- not so much with what he does [because he fucks up bad in-story], but more how he acts.
Some of the fights were okay. Still wish Marvel had any idea about the concept of not shaking the camera in the middle of the action; Steadicam is a thing that exists, 'ya know? Wasn't nearly as fucking awful about it as Black Panther, but a lot of the fights are more long-range anyway.
Every single time Bruce said or did something, it looked and felt a bit awful, he's really just a lame guy here. Really, he detracted from damn near every scene he was in except when he's introducing the threat of Thanos.
Thanos looks cool here, although nothing's gonna stop his face from resembling a ballsack. They also tried to portray him as a bit sympathetic, but I kinda felt that didn't really work out.

And damn, that certainly was an ending. Hit me out of left field. It's totally gonna get undone next time, but I'm still a pretty damn surprised they ended on this note. Probably going to be really effective in terms of getting asses into seats to see how it's resolved.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

The Last Days on Mars (2013) Small research team discovers life on Mars: a virus that turns cunts just like you and me into Fast Zombies™. Crumbs!

Competently generic b-movie genre splice, will neither surprise nor offend. Ticks all the zombie outbreak/space disaster boxes with appreciated lack of comic relief. Decent frowny but sensitive lead performance from Liev Schrieber. One effectively scored "aww sheeit, its quiet, 2 quiet" rummage in the dark, also pretty striking zombie debut, though it's the usual 28 Days malarkey once the cat's out of the bag. Decent late night distraction watch.

The Predator FC cutscenes also remind me of Rambo's NES ending that mistranslates the line from the end of Rambo: First Blood Part II.

Highlights from this year

Hanging Garden (2005)
Wonderful World End (2015)
Fuku-chan of FukuFuku Flats (2014)
Bright Future (2002)
The Foreign Duck, the Native Duck and God in a Coin Locker (2007)
Oh Brother, Oh Sister! (2014)
Tokyo Sonata (2008)
Kids Return (1996)
Kaza-hana (2000)
Charisma (1999)

They're all 8/10ish though. I want to see something really great. Might have to go with some of the classics I've been putting off.

Yeah, B-Movie for sure.
The film's title is epic though and drew me to watch it (and of course, I'm quite partial to Olivia Williams :) )

I think Tokyo Sonata is a good movie. I remember saying I liked it after having seen it and getting roasted slightly for it. Charisma I started watching several times too late at night and fell asleep. The others sound interesting though.

Been looking for some good J-movies. Will check these out. Last one I tried was recommended by a Japanese friend. It was quirky, but the cliche's (and star whom I'm not a fan of) quickly put me to sleep.

I like all of those movies, but if there's any genre in particular you're looking for I could probably recommend some better stuff (besides romance, I don't watch much of that).

Bright Future and Tokyo Sonata are Kiyoshi Kurosawa's best movies imo. Maybe Pulse too, but I need to rewatch that. I'd put Charisma and most of his other movies just a notch below them. To me he's a consistently good, sometimes great, but never amazing director. Even his TV series (Penance) was pretty good.
