PLATINE DISPOSITIF shmups of note?
Been replaying Gundemonium Recollection, and having a rocking time with this joyfully schizophrenic clusterfuck of a game, so I was wondering if there are any other titles of his that haven't been brought overseas, and that are worth a look?
I already know about Engage to Jabberwock, and Bunny Must Die, for the record.
I know there was some melee oriented horizontal stg that he has a demo for, and I recall seeing a comitek preview a while back for some starforce / zanac looking title. Any thoughts on them, and anything else?

I've got Hitogata Happa, which is pretty unique for a stg. You get dozens of lives and suicide ramming enemies for mega explosions is a strategy. It's a bit hard to adjust to.

Royal Edoma Engine, Gundeadligne, Bloodvane. This guy has plenty of games. Most of them Shmups.Squire Grooktook wrote:Been replaying Gundemonium Recollection, and having a rocking time with this joyfully schizophrenic clusterfuck of a game, so I was wondering if there are any other titles of his that haven't been brought overseas, and that are worth a look?

Oh yeah, should have mentioned I have these already as part of the Gundemonium Trilogy.Kaspal wrote:Gundeadligne
Never heard of Royal Edmoa Engine before, and only played the demo for Bloodvane. Anyone played the full versions and have any thoughts on 'em?Kaspal wrote:Royal Edoma Engine, Bloodvane

They do have one shmup that I haven't seen yet, but it's name isn't searchable due to it consisting of an entirely made up set of characters. The whole game is like that, iirc. The url page of the game on their site just lists it as an underscore.

I played Royal Edoma Engine when it came out. Its one hell of a fun isometric danmaku game. Highly recommended.
I have bloodvane too, but never actually played it fully. so i cannot comment as i can with the rest of the collection... but it's pretty much in the style of Platine Dispossitiff, so if you can find it, give it a go.
I'd love to play the one with made up characters, but since its name is unsearchable, and i dont know who might have the original CD release, i'm like "screwed". Maybe one day.

I could swear there was a demo for the "unnamed" shmup at one point, though I imagine it's not much easier to find than the full release, heh.

There's a link at the bottom of the game's page.BulletMagnet wrote:I could swear there was a demo for the "unnamed" shmup at one point, though I imagine it's not much easier to find than the full release, heh.

Ah, can Westerners access PD's page again? For awhile it blocked us if memory serves.

At least in the US, the website is partially blocked; some pages and images don't load (including the page with the demo in question), but others do.BulletMagnet wrote:Ah, can Westerners access PD's page again? For awhile it blocked us if memory serves.
But you can just use a Japanese proxy to get past the issue.

I'm in the US and have never had a problem going anywhere on that site. Including earlier today when I just checked.

Re: PLATINE DISPOSITIF shmups of note?
It's not a regional block. For some reason, certain IP ranges are just blocked by, I believe, PlatineDispositif's host. I can access the website just fine using mobile data, but as soon as I switch over to my home network, I can only access the website's front page and many of the images are broken. This is actually quite a hassle if you are playing the doujin versions of the games. Some years ago, Murasame switched over to using an automatic update mechanism in his newer games, instead of issuing conventional stand-alone patches. Every time you start a game, it phones home to see if there's a new update, which it downloads and installs if you give it permission to do so. This does not work if you are caught in the IP block, so you have to get around it by using a VPN or another network.
Anyway, most of PlatineDispositif's games have STG elements, but of the ones that are actually shmups, I think the Gundemonium trilogy (Gundemonium, Gundeadligne, and Hitogata Happa) is the most polished. Most of the other shmups are either experimental or quirky, or just feel rushed to me. Many are also long out of print now.
- Royal Edoma Engine is an isometric bullet hell shmup. I don't imagine this combination is for everyone, but I remember the game being pretty enjoyable once I adjusted to the perspective.
- Dandelion is a mouse-controlled shmup that is best played with a stylus. The object is to draw a closed loop around a clump of bullets in order to turn them into a projectile that you can slingshot at an enemy. The larger the clump, the stronger the shot. It's pretty different and worth a look, I think.
- Bloodvane, I could never wrap my head around. It's been a long while since I last played it, but if I remember correctly, the idea was to slash organic enemies with your melee attack in order to drench yourself in their blood. There was red blood and blue blood, which respectively increased your offensive and defensive capabilities for a short amount of time. I was reminded of Ikaruga, with how you always had to be juggling colors at certain times in order to get by. I wasn't able to finish this game and didn't find it too enjoyable because it felt like there were nuances to the system that I could just never figure out.
- _____ is amusing simply because the game uses an entirely made-up language, even for the UI. It's competently put together and I didn't find it too difficult. It's worth checking out, especially if you're a fan of Star Soldier and similar. The only thing that bothered me about this game was that I was never able to figure out how to consistently unlock certain option formations in each run; I remember there was one formation in particular that would only show up if I wiped my user data before playing. I don't know.
- Ihou Shoujo Magatsuhi is basically Space Harrier. Feels a bit rushed.
- If you like Pocky & Rocky or similar, check out Space Dynagon. I had such a blast with this game; there was just something so satisfying about mowing down endless hordes of leaf people using a spread shot.
