Deadliar's tournament for cool people: Interest check

Post by Deadliar »

WHAT: A tournament much like STGT, only this one features exclusively (good) games with unique, interesting mechanics.
*Does not apply to unique scoring, particularly fancy weapons/bombs and similar twists, must be solid, simple to use mechanic that is a core part of the game.

WHEN: Two weeks after TRP-STGT should be nice.

HOW: One game per ten days, five games and a special challenge for top participants. Goal is a for-fun atmosphere with plenty of time to practice.

ETC ETC: Maximum of one Cave game, minimum of zero. No Ikaruga, Silvergun or Karous. Can guarantee quality game selection and an enlightening experience, can't guarantee much else.

ADDITIONALLY: The tournament may be delayed to three weeks after TRP, and the per-game time might be extended to two weeks, making it quite a lenthy event but also far more relaxed, probably a good thing, but I digress. If you'd like either of these options as opposed to the above, simply make it known and appropriation shall commence.

So now, the questions are:
-Would you participate in such an event?
-What games would you hope to play in such an event? (No reveals)
-What games would you HATE to play in such an event?
-Other: please specify in post

10 days is kind of an odd interval - some periods cover two weekends, while others cover only one.

Will you only choose games able to be emulated in MAME, or will you include others, e.g. consoles games or PC doujin games?

If it's able to be easily emulated, it can be included. This is not limited to just MAME but anything newer than say PSX is most likely out of the question.
Furthermore, if there are differences between game ports/versions that cannot be avoided, the port/version that is easiest to run will be selected.

If it's a PC/console game, it has to be freeware to be included.

That's it, I suppose. There shouldn't be any cases of people being unable to play.

You might also want to check whether any Windows games you select work well in WINE, as not everybody has Windows. Not that that's a problem for me, and I'm unlikely to participate in this anyway (mostly timing and realizing during TRP-STGT that I don't want to force myself to play games during specific weeks).

Please include Space Bomber (if it's not picked for the last week of TRP-STGT - still holding out hope for that) and at least one TwinBee game.

I'll never forget the conversations between the president and the alien dorks in Space Bomber. Top tier stuff. Great game too.

Ahem back to the point. Making sure WINE works is a great point, you may have prevented a mishap by pointing that out, awesome job :]

EDIT: Regarding weeks, I don't think a proper time format truly exists. If i'd put something like two weeks, it would end up stupidly long. One week really isn't enough for most people, and ten days seems like a good compromise until you look at the previously-pointed out uneven weekends. The only thing left to do would be some weird criss-cross where you have two weeks to submit games but new games start every week and share some time. Then again even that has downsides as it would pile up and end up feeling as too much work for many. If anyone has a better suggestion for schedules, hit me up 8)

Two weeks probably too soon for this, Q1 2018 maybe such a busy month for some people (me too). Please do a 16-bit game tournament too.

Plz no CAVE.

If enough people (read: like one or two more) agree with this, It shall be delayed a week further.

Just make the time interval 2 weeks instead of 10 days.

If you need ideas for good games, just scour STGTs pre trap era ( 05-12 i believe) for arcade stuff.

No boring/ super medicore/slowdown ridden games like Last Resort or Gekerindan.

Don't worry, I have a literal list already. I'm more curious to what underrated games people'd want to see, since I probably don't share tastes with everyone X)

As for the interval, just as with the starting date, I'll indeed make it two weeks if others also find that to be a good decision.

Nice, I was looking for something more relaxed.

I'd still love to see an organization with teams, albeit made by 4-5 people, getting only the top 2 scores.

This way I wouldn't feel bad if I can't get to contribute to my team if I have 2 weeks full of work and no time to dedicate to the tournament.

This is gonna be a matter of choice. You'll be able to enter solo or as a team, and neither will have any inherent benefits (team scores being an average score of all members)
