Oh and traps webpage with the scorelist is SO 2001, I mean, come on tsss lets put the scores on a google spreadsheet or you could at least implement a facebook/twitter share button.

Discord is The Future that will replace forums and IRC and everything else, and any attempt to resist or even question this goes against social protocol. You have been noted, you are being marked, and eventually you will be obsoleted.

Seriously, can we just use the threads for this, please? Not only is it unnecessary, but temporary servers like that will likely be deleted after STGT is over. This is one of the great dangers of Discord; everything on it is supposed to be temporary, and every attempt to bandage this is merely a weak bandage.

I don't understand why people think Discord is completely okay. I don't understand why there is zero resistance to Discord's very real problems that make it significantly worse than almost every service it's replacing. No, this is not really off-topic, because it concerns STGT directly, as it is now and potentially in the future, as well as the forums as a whole. The new sticky seems like a pretty good spot to make a post like this.

Noob question but lets pretend that I'm in the top 3 and you want to see a replay, how should I do this?
Is there some kind of dedicated replay feature in mame or do the games themself have such a feature implemented, do I maybe need to record my gameplay just in case?

You can record an .inp file, which would take a digital record of your "input" in that run, which you could then replay in mame. There should be an option either in MAME's "File" tab, or in the game menu itself, I can't remember.

You can also select the "AVI write" in MAMEplus (at the least) from the File tab options, but that takes up huuuuge amounts of space: we are talking dozens of gigabytes for a full run that you would need to compress down and edit in a video-editing software.

And of course there is third-party software (FRAPS for example).

Wow... I didn't really think it that far, I have absolutely no idea what Discord is, and just found it bothersome having to sign up for a new service and multitask even more just to discuss shmups, something I'm already on this forum for.

But despite your aggressive approach, I think you have a good point, and I can't really disagree with anything you said. The more you spread out communication between several platforms, the more likely small communities are to die. I've seen it happen often.

-aviwrite takes up a huge amount of space and the emulator will slow down if your hard drive can't keep up with all the data being written. I usually record an input file as EmperorIng suggested, then play that back while using -aviwrite to render the input file to a video (it doesn't matter then if the emulator slows down), then compress/encode the video with FFmpeg. I could throw together a quick guide on that if there's demand for it, since you're not the first to ask about that. For what it's worth this is how I record all my arcade game videos on YouTube.

Or you could just make a recording and/or stream to Twitch/YouTube/etc. with OBS.

Forums and chatrooms serve a very different purpose. Discord has the illusion of killing forums for a peculiar reason:

I'm talking about the forums where there's "technically" a thing that ties everyone together, but it just ends up as a place to hang out.

A place like this can't die due to it because it's properly being used as a forum. Meanwhile you'll find a metric ton of sites where forums were never needed in the first place. Perhaps it isn't a bad thing that such forums are being killed off...
