Yeah that freeze really breaks the flow and with a rumble pack in the controller it can be a little bit shocking too. I've actually grown to like it now cos it allows time to swear and kick nearby objects when you get hit without disrupting gameplay too muchemphatic wrote:I hate that little freeze frame as you get killed in UD. I also hate that freeze - but I'm almost certain its just because it exacerbates the already existing pain of having just died. I quite like that it breaks the flow - it's like a slap in the face to do better.mjclark wrote:Yeah that freeze really breaks the flow and with a rumble pack in the controller it can be a little bit shocking too. For me, comparing UD and ZG2 is like comparing Ikaruga and Giga Wing.

Definitely UD.

I agree in terms of that comparison; in both cases, the second game wins out!
Giga Wing and Zero Gunner 2 are both much more exciting than their rivals in that instance.

Under Defeat can be got dirt cheap for 360/PS3. I might not be as accurate but it's gorgeous - at least I can vouch for the PAL 360 version which has all the patches and extra DLC (new helicopters) on the disc - so I'd get Zero Gunner 2 for DC first.
THEN I'd get Under Defeat for it
THEN I'd get Under Defeat for it

Under Defeat feels like a really solid and polished game but I really don't care for it that much. It feels really constrained by its design, everything feels so precise. I agree that it's somewhat bland and soulless.
Been a while since I played Zero Gunner 2, but the game is just hella fun.

I'm going to chime in and recommend Zero Gunner 2 as well. I played both games recently for the first time and while I appreciate the art design in Under Defeat, it didn't impress me the way ZG2 did. It's very much a Video System/Psikyo-style game and it's neat to see their style done in polygon graphics.
The rotation mechanic is pretty fun (though in all honesty I would have preferred a simple 'rotate left' and 'rotate right' setup. The control method is clever, and it works, but not as well as using the R and L shoulder buttons would have. Apart from that nitpick it's truly great, probably my favorite DC shmup.

ZG2 can now be played in widescreen on an actual DC via a extremely simple hex patch. It looks glorious.
Still, UD

Love this thread; it forced me to go back and play both so I could provide an accurate response. And I'd say that I lean a bit toward UD, but not by much. Both are fantastic, but I do enjoy the challenge of managing your secondary weapon in UD. And also, I think ZG2 would have been a twin-stick shooter had that been an option back then.
